Chiefs' Secondary

KCChiefs.com Bob Gretz broke down the club's secondary battles. "First, don’t believe that CB Patrick Surtain has his spot in the defense locked up. It’s just that the odds of getting enough production in the coming months from all the new faces so that Surtain can also be replaced are pretty long. Second-round choice Brandon Flowers is likely be the first man in line to replace CB Ty Law. The returning veterans who factor in at cornerback are Tyron Brackenridge, Rashard Barksdale and Dimitri Patterson. Joining them are two more rookies Brandon Carr, the team’s fifth-round pick, and college free agent Maurice Leggett. More than likely they will add another cornerback at some point. There’s one other candidate for the nickel back job and that’s third-round pick DaJuan Morgan. He’s listed at safety, but Edwards talked during the Draft that Morgan could move down into the slot and cover receivers in the nickel.

The D-line better get pressure on the opposition's QB, and that's without departed DL Jared Allen. If not, this unit could get picked on, a lot.

More Man-Love for Bush

Sirius NFL Radio host Adam Schein shared his thoughts on the Raiders backfield. "Even with the Raiders picking RB Darren McFadden, look out for a productive season from RB Michael Bush. The second-year back told us he's healthy and has been assured he is in Oakland's plans. I think he can score touchdowns and move the pile for Lane Kiffin's offense this year. A trio of RB Justin Fargas, McFadden and Bush is going to be very formidable.

It's hard to believe all three will make a fantasy impact. In real life, sure, they all could carve out a role, but this is slowly developing into a fantasy nightmare.

Long on Talent

On Friday, the first day of the three-day, full-squad minicamp at Rams Park, rookie DE Chris Long blew by OT Alex Barron on a pass rush. "I told him I'm willing to help him any way I can, any time he needed help," DE Leonard Little said. "He's athletic; he's very athletic. But as a rookie, you've got to learn what you're doing, and that makes you play a lot faster on the field."

Long and Little are expected to bring the heat off the edge for the Rams defense this season. Injuries hurt last year, but the return of a healthy Little (toe) and the addition of Long will help them. Right now, Little has better IDP value because he's done it before and for a period of time; Long might take some time to adjust to the NFL game.

Holt to Bolt?

"I have this year and next year, and hopefully I can finish those years out," WR Torry Holt said at the conclusion of the day's minicamp practice. "Then, I'll see where I'm at. I'll see where I'm at physically. I'll see where I'm at emotionally, financially. And then, if they would like to do something here, I'll consider it. If not, then I'll have the option to go and explore and give my services somewhere else. So if that happens, Carolina will definitely be the first choice — no question about it. But I have '08 and '09 left to play, and that's what I plan on doing."

Holt's been recovering from a bum knee and the loss of WR Isaac Bruce, as well as his brother heading to play for the Carolina Panthers, so you can see why he thinks he might be done as a St. Louis Ram at the end of his contract. This has nothing on his current situation, Holt is a professional that would not let anything bother his play on the field; and if he's healthy he's one of the best in the game of football.

Payton Likes Rookies

Saints Coach Sean Payton said he likes what he has seen so far from the team's top two draft picks -- DT Sedrick Ellis and CB Tracy Porter. Ellis has shown the desire and explosiveness that made him attractive to the Saints, Payton said. And Porter has shown instincts in coverage.

It is rookie minicamp only, but this is a step in the right direction for a defense that was shredded the last few seasons. Neither Ellis nor Porter deserve consideration in any IDP leagues, but they will help the Saints become a respectable NFL defense.

Turner At Minicamp

Tailback Michael Turner (shoulder) participated in most drills after being medically withheld from a voluntary mini-camp in April.

While the QB situation in Atlanta is questionable right now, the RB situation is different and a healthy Michael Turner means a healthy amount of carries for the Falcons new featured back. We reported earlier that the Falcons are going to feature a smashmouth running game, and Turner will be the man that triggers the change.

Troy Smith Gets Praise

HC John Harbaugh was complimentary of QB Troy Smith, who's competing with Kyle Boller and Joe Flacco for the starting job. "You can see he can play quarterback in the NFL, without question," he said. "He's got the arm strength. He can move around and operate the offense. Now under pressure, proving himself in games, that's going to be up to him, but he's got the ability to be a starting quarterback in this league."

It is very early to get excited about this situation. Just yesterday, Harbaugh was complimenting Flacco, so obviously he is trying to build up their confidence and mess with the minds of fantasy footballers. Training camp will determine the starter in Baltimore. Will it be the athletic Smith, the strong-armed rookie, or the veteran Boller?

Bears to Keep Benson

General manager Jerry Angelo said the Bears have no plans to release running back Cedric Benson in the wake of his arrest last weekend in Texas. But no matter how the case plays out, Angelo said Benson was guilty of poor judgment.

Benson may get to stay on the team, but his recent production on the field doesn't make him attractive to fantasy owners. Benson should be drafted late if you draft him at all. If you draft for upside then give Bears rookie Matt Forte a chance.

Barnes Emerging

Ravens second year LB Antwan Barnes is filling in for holdout LB/DE Terrell Suggs in Ravens minicamp and is turning some heads. Ravens DE Trevor Pryce summed Barnes up by saying "He ain't going to be a sleeper, because everybody knows who he is." "He might surprise himself, but he won't surprise any of us. He's fast and he explodes."

Barnes is getting some meaningful reps as Suggs holds out in a contract dispute. Barnes has bulked up to 255 pounds while maintaining his 4.5 forty speed. Barnes has played anywhere from defensive end, to rush linebacker to safety during minicamp. He is beginning to be moved around similarly to how the Ravens moved former LB Adalius Thomas. Watch Barnes' progression this pre-season, as he may challenge for a starting job at SLB while also providing some situational pass rushing for the Ravens this season.

Winslow Out of OTAs

Offensive players not available for the start of Cleveland OTAs include receiver Joe Jurevicius (staph infection), tight end Steve Heiden (disk surgery) and tight end Kellen Winslow (knee). While Jurevicius and Heiden are expected to be on hand as observers, Winslow is not. Attendance is voluntary, of course. But Winslow's absence may be a precursor to a contract dispute.

Winslow did have offseason knee surgery, but he wants a new contract and it could cause him to miss some time. However, we still expect him to be ready to roll for Week 1. Winslow is a top-5 tight end this season.

McFadden Dazzles

RB Darren McFadden dazzled onlookers at Raiders camp with several runs on which he turned the corner and raced past defenders and into the end zone. Practice concluded with McFadden taking a pitchout and blowing past a linebacker for a long run down the left sideline. "He does bring us some speed and brings us a game-breaker," Kiffin said. "The last play of the practice, it came down to one play to win (the offense vs. defense competition). There was a linebacker right there, and (McFadden) made the play for us." McFadden also received some work at quarterback and receiver in off-to-the-side tutoring from Kiffin and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. "Yeah, he looked real comfortable in a number of different things that we did with him," Kiffin said.

RB Michael Bush was also said to have a spring in his step during camp. We'll see how McFadden looks once defenders are allowed to tackle... if they can catch him.

Everyone looks good against the Raiders run defense. Their own RBs notwithstanding.

The fluff time of year. Rare is the report that someone looks bad in camp.

Of course but they do have talent in Bush, Fargas and McFadden. The line is another story.
