Raiders Cut Schweigert

The Raiders have released free safety Stuart Schweigert, who went from third-year starter to benched to unemployed in the past six months. Schweigert was told of his dismissal Tuesday morning when players returned for Organized Team Activities, two sources close to the team told The Chronicle. His job prospects took a blow this past offseason when the Raiders signed Giants strong safety Gibril Wilson and moved Michael Huff to free safety

A third-round pick in the 2004 draft, Schweigert started 37 straight games, and 38 of 42, from 2005 through midseason last year. He had 69 tackles and two interceptions last season but was often criticized by fans for missed tackles against the run.

Randle El Recovering Well

After undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, Redskins WR Antwaan Randle El says he is recovering well.

Randle El looked like he was going to show some fantasy promise early last season, but ended up not doing much. With the drafting of both WR Devin Thomas and WR Malcolm Kelly, Randle El's fantasy value will be close to zero this year.

Wilkinson The Favorite At Weakside

Right now, Giants LB Gerris Wilkinson is the favorite to takeover the weakside spot this season.

That will give Wilkinson nice IDP sleeper material this season. While he won't play lights out every week, 70+ tackles are not out of the question either. Draft him as your LB3 and he should produce.

Boldin Skips Workout

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin skipped the team's first voluntary workout on Tuesday.

Since it's voluntary, we aren't concerned right now. Boldin has said he doesn't want a contract squabble to interfere with his game, so we would be surprised to see him not show up to mandatory practices. Boldin is still a WR1 going into this season.

Jackson Sticking Out

Patriots WR Chad Jackson has been sticking out in OTAs.

Jackson was said to have made some great catches and is running fluid routes. He will likely battle with WR Jabar Gaffney for the team's starting split end. He still has value in dynasty leagues, but Jackson is more of a waiver wire pickup this year if he doesn't win the job in camp.

Graham Misses Another OTA

Buccaneers RB Earnest Graham reportedly missed another OTA on Tuesday.

This will be the sixth workout that Graham has missed. Being disgruntled about not getting a new contract likely does not sit well with Graham owners right now. If this drags into the summer, Graham's fantasy value could slip. For now, he still a decent RB2.

Taylor Missing from OTAs

RB Chester Taylor was not in Minnesota for OTA's; the team is not worried because Taylor often works out on his own during the offseason.

This is not a contract squabble, or anything to worry about. Taylor, who split time and lost publicity to RB Adrian Peterson last year, put up over 800 yards on 5.4 ypc and scored seven rushing TD's. He also caught 29 balls for 281 yards. The Vikings passing game doesn't appear to be much better, even with the addition of WR Bernard Berrian; so we expect another season of Taylor and Peterson carrying the load for the Vikings. Taylor makes a great insurance policy for Peterson, even if you don't get Peterson, Taylor is a solid RB3 or potential back up.

Birk Skips Workouts

C Matt Birk continued his plan to skip the Vikings' voluntary workouts Monday as he missed the first day of Organized Team Activities at Winter Park. The six-time Pro Bowl center is entering the last year of an eight-year contract. The Vikings are playing wait-and-see before considering an extension. "I don't feel like I need to plead my case for a contract," he said. "I think my career and my 10 years in this league speak for themselves."Birk is due to make a base salary of $5.32 million and receive a $400,000 roster bonus before his deal expires next March.

As we reported earlier this is no surprise to the Vikings, and Birk is working out with a former teammate. The Vikings expect Birk to show up at mandatory team events; this doesn't appear to be as messy as the Brian Urlacher situation in Chicago. We do know that RB Adrian Peterson will be estatic whenever the Pro Bowl C returns to the Vikings.

Urlacher Skips OTA's

Bears LB Brian Urlacher skipped organized team activities, as he's sitting out because he wants to re-do a contract he signed with the Bears.

Urlacher, true to his word.. at least in this case, skipped OTA's waiting for a new contract. There is no new news about if he'll sit out or play this season, but we think he'll be in uniform when the season starts. If that's the case, he's still a legit IDP player because of his tackle numbers and how he finds the loose football.

Surprise! Benson a No-Show

RB Cedric Benson was a noticable no-show at organized team activities, despite the fact he was not required to appear in court, and the team expected him to show up. RB Adrian Peterson took snaps with the number one offense in Benson's absence.

The Benson boat saga grows daily, but a guy with that much on his back and poor performance should get into camp and prove that he wants the job. Peterson and rookie RB Matt Forte could steal carries before all is said and done. We would stay far from Benson unless you have a stable of good backs and are hoping for him to erupt so you can trade him.

Jackson to Shoulder Load

OC Al Saunders plans to run the offense through RB Steven Jackson, a player he considers dynamic enough to match numbers with San Diego's RB LaDanian Tomlinson or anyone else. Saunders sees an authoritative and powerful runner with outstanding speed, excellent hands and good blocking skills. "When you get somebody of his stature and his physical makeup, with his speed and his ability to run, catch and block, you are only limited by your own imagination in terms of what you can do with a player like that," Saunders said.

We think that Saunders can think of some creative ways to get fire back into the Rams' offense. The last time Saunders was with the Rams, in 2000, the team scored 540 points. Jackson should be a top 3 pick in your league because he's healthy and has an electric OC calling the plays. QB Marc Bulger and always reliable WR Torry Holt should also move up on draft boards because of the Saunders effect as well.

Chiefs May Trade Huard

As the Chiefs make an effort to get younger, QB Damon Huard, could eventually be traded or released if the Chiefs are satisfied with the progress of their two young quarterbacks, Brodie Croyle and Tyler Thigpen.

Last year we didn't know who would start for the Chiefs at this time, but this year the team appears to be going with Brodie Croyle and looking to get rid of Huard. We aren't sure Croyle is the answer, but for fantasy purposes you should draft him late.

LJ Back on the Field

Chiefs RB Larry Johnson, who missed the last half of last season because of a broken foot, practiced with the Chiefs yesterday. “He made it through,” Herm Edwards said. “He did everything. He’ll practice again (today).”

It is nice to hear good news on Larry Johnson. Between contract squabbles and injuries, Johnson was a disappointment to fantasy owners last year. He will likely be a late 1st round selection in most leagues.

Marshall Ready for Training Camp

Broncos WR Brandon Marshall (forearm) participated in the team's first passing camp, much to the surprise of many. Marshall did not catch passes, but he completed all running drills with the team. He is on schedule to practice fully in training camp.

Marshall was dynamite in '07 and is expected to be just as good this season. Draft him as a WR1 and expect 100 catches again along with 10 TDs.

Shanle Expected to Start

Dan Morgan was expected to compete with veteran Scott Shanle for the starting weakside linebacker job. With the Morgan's retirement, Shanle likely will face competition from veterans Mark Simoneau and Troy Evans and second-year pro Marvin Mitchell.

Shanle had 93 tackles last season and could put up triple digit tackles this year. Consider him a sleeper in IDP leagues.
