J.Taylor-to-SD Buzz

The Chargers are denying they have interest in DL Jason Taylor through sources that are talking to the San Diego Union-Tribune. But Miami Herald blogger Armando SalgueroI "knows" they have interest in Taylor. The Chargers are aware their championship window of opportunity is closing. The team is very familiar with Taylor because former Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller joined that team as an assistant to general manager A.J. Smith about three weeks ago. Mueller's two years in Miami gives him a solid foundation of knowledge on Taylor. Mueller respected Taylor as an outstanding pass-rusher, but also knew the player was often times a less than stellar run-stopper.

 

Salguerol seems confident for reporting such little substance. He thinks if/when Taylor is traded, he goes for a third-round pick. That would be disastrous value considering the Fins could have had a lot more prior to the draft.

Bills' Offensive Progress

Dick Jauron knew with a few changes that there would be an adjustment period and that period is now. "I wouldn't say it was real sharp and it probably shouldn't be at this time," said Jauron. As far as QB Trent Edwards is concerned there isn't a long learning curve with respect to the changes in the scheme. "I would say a majority of the terminology is pretty much the same," Edwards said. "There are different routes and different words for those new routes, but a lot of our formations and a lot of our routes, a lot of our run calls are pretty much the same and that's going to help the young guys out a lot." One big change is the expansion and freedom of audibles for the quarterbacks. There was only a smattering of audibles this week, but Edwards expects that to change in the OTAs to come.

 

It would be an impressive show of confidence if Jauron gave Edwards the green light on audibles at the line of scrimmage. If folks believe the offensive line can protect Edwards and RB Marshawn Lynch, the Bills will be a sexy preseason pick to make a run at the playoffs.

O'Sullivan Out Of The Mix

According to 49ers HC Mike Nolan, the team is backing off it's claims that QB J.T. O'Sullivan has a chance to start this year.

 

We didn't think it would happen, but it's better to know that the team wants to make it a two man race between QB Alex Smith and QB Shaun Hill for the starting job. We wouldn't give either player a chance in redrafts, but one might emerge as a decent fantasy option in dynasty or deep keeper leagues.

NFL Looking Into Pacman Debt

The NFL is looking into the unsettled gambling debts of DB Pacman Jones.

 

Jones reportedly wrote bad checks to Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and owes $20,000. This is something that Pacman will have to clear up ASAP if he wants to have any chance of getting reinstated in the league.

Scheffler To Be Ready By TC?

According to some inside the Broncos' facility, TE Tony Scheffler is expected to be healthy by training camp, despite a foot injury.

 

There have been conflicting reports that Scheffler fractured his left foot, so take the statement with a grain of salt. For now, we would draft him as a TE2 until he shows he is completely healthy going into Week 1.

Vikings Cut James

The Vikings waived DE Erasmus James today, according to the team’s website. James was waived after failing to pass his physical.

 

James was a first round pick in the 2005 draft and never could stay healthy. His bad knees will likely keep him from ever being productive again.

J.Taylor Heading To Ravens?

CBS radio in Baltimore reports that there are trade talks on-going that could send disgruntled Dolphins' DE Jason Taylor to the Ravens for a 2009 third or second round draft pick.

 

This is the first we have heard about a Taylor/Ravens connection. However, it is known that Taylor and the Dolphins are at odds and a trade of Taylor does seem like a strong possibility. If this trade were to happen, the Ravens would be much better suited to play a 4-3 scheme. Under that scenario, it would be interesting to see how the Ravens would utilize DL/LB hybrid Terrell Suggs. More news to follow if it comes closer to becoming a reality.

Winfield Optimistic

Coming off a frustrating season in which he missed six games because of injury, Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield is looking forward to a happier and healthier 2008.He also has a guarantee."There's no way we're going to finish last in the league in pass defense," he said Thursday. "We definitely expect to be a lot better."

 

Winfield is considered one of a few cornerbacks that are very good IDP players since he isn't afraid to make tackles along with being a playmaker. Winfield only had 67 tackles and one INT last year, but should be back to a top-10 DB this season.

Nelson Similar To Reed?

Jaguars' defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson compares S Reggie Nelson's talent to that of another pro bowl safety he has coached: Ravens' S Ed Reed."The guy is as talented as [Ravens Pro Bowl player] Ed Reed. What I've got to get him to do is be a little bit more vocal right now."

 

Nelson had a solid rookie campaign with 63 total tackles, five interceptions and 16 passes defensed. If he can take a step forward under Henderson's tutelage he can have a chance to crack some IDP lineups in deep leagues this year.

We all remember what happened in Philadelphia when Terrell Owens became upset with his contract situation in 2005: The Eagles sat him for the last nine games of the season for conduct detrimental to the club. T.O. insists that will never happen in Dallas. "It's not a big deal. I don't even feel comfortable talking about it," T.O. said of his contract status. "It's easy for me because of the relationship. I met with Jerry my first year and talked to him on the phone more than I ever did with the owners in San Francisco and Philly. He's a guy that's very personable; he interacts and he talks with his players. And that's all you ever want."

 

Hopefully Owens means what he says and he will just play football again this season. He is getting older, but is still a top-5 fantasy WR.

Lewis Predicts Big Numbers

Last year Browns RB Jamal Lewis rushed for 1,304 yards and this season he is predicting much more. "I think 1,400 or 1,500 yards is an understatement," Lewis said. "I'd like to get more than that. I think I can get more than that. Missing two games ... I could have gotten more than that last year."

 

Lewis surprised many last year by effectively running the ball and he should do the same this season since the Browns have a powerful passing game that will leave only six or seven men in the box most of the time. Draft Lewis in the 2nd round as your RB2.

Moulds Tries Out For Bucs

After trying out free agent WR Eddie Kennison, the Buccaneers hosted free agent WR Eric Moulds on Thursday.

 

If the team is trying to upgrade their receiving core, they aren't hosting the right players who will help. Moulds hasn't had a productive 1000-yard season since 2004 when he was with the Bills. He won't do much in Tampa.

Titans Host Jones

Along with RB Ron Dayne, free agent RB Kevin Jones visited the Titans.

 

Jones is coming off ACL surgery, so it isn't known if he was able to pass a physical or not. The Patriots reportedly have interest in Jones as well and he could be a decent backup on both teams. Hold off on picking him up until he signs with someone.

Kinney Retires

After being cut last March after microfracture surgery, former Titans TE Erron Kinney has retired.

 

Kinney was never a great tight end option. His best year was in 2005, when he had 543 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He won't be missed that much.

HC Wants Russell In 65% Range

According to Raiders HC Lane Kiffin, the goal is to have QB JaMarcus Russell into the 65 percent completion range.

 

That's a lot to ask for when your team is as bad as the Raiders. But the team did some upgrading with the signing of WR Javon Walker and the drafting of RB Darren McFadden. Russell is nowhere near being a QB1, but he could be a decent lower-end QB2.

Tuiasosopo Back With Oakland

One year after leaving the Oakland Raiders to become a backup QB with the NY Jets, Marques Tuiasosopo has signed with the team that originally drafted him in 2001.

 

Tuiasosopo signed a contract Thursday. He played sparingly as a backup for six seasons in Oakland before signing with the Jets as a free agent last season. He did not play in a single game with New York.

I really don't understand the Dolphins "thinking" on this. Didn't Jax offer a 1st round pick THIS year for Taylor? And now his stock is dropping since he's threatening to just go to Hollywood and act And I agree with him... why risk your body for team that doesn't respect you at all and isn't going to be competitive again in your career.

 

Ship em out and continue to rebuild.....only downside is the value we get for him will not be anything near what he is worth........I would like to have seen him work against Long, as it would have been good experience for the Rook.......IMO, it looks as though the Phin braintrust may have screwed themselves on this one......

Bears RB Cedric Benson is back on the police blotter, appearing in court yesterday to pay a $510 speeding fine.

 

Police described Benson as cooperative after he was caught going 77 mph in a 45 mph construction zone after 3 a.m. Benson's chances of reviving his once-promising career would seemingly increase exponentially if he could stop stumbling all over himself on the football field, in the press, and on the country's highways and waterways.

Pacman Pays Off Debt

Cowboys DB Pacman Jones has paid off the $20,000 debt that he owed a Las Vegas casino.

 

The payoff means the District Attorney can recall the arrest warrant that was placed on Jones. This will likely not help his reinstatement, but it won't hurt either. Jones owners are going to have to continue the waiting game for a couple more weeks.

Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has passed word through friends that he wants to play for the Chargers.

It won't happen.

 

After months of rumors and theories by fans and even some media about the Chargers' interest in the former Defensive Player of the Year, a report on NFL Network on Thursday gave the speculation an air of legitimacy. The Chargers are forbidden from talking about a player under contract, but sources familiar with the thinking of the team's decision-makers have said emphatically that the Chargers have no interest in the Miami Dolphins defensive end and aspiring actor.

 

The combination of his age, salary, what is seen as diminishing skills and his perceived lack of commitment to football quashed any interest by the Chargers. According to sources, the Chargers have not discussed a trade for Taylor with the Dolphins or Taylor's agent.

 

Taylor, 34, is to make almost $8 million in 2008.

 

He has upset his current boss, Bill Parcells, by skipping offseason workouts to participate in “Dancing With the Stars.”

 

Taylor finished second to Kristi Yamaguchi this week in the popular television show.

 

Taylor reportedly has requested a trade, though he was quoted this week saying he would like to stay in Miami. Conflicting reports have the Dolphins trying to trade the six-time Pro Bowler and taking him off the trading block.

 

Taylor said after his “Dancing” stint that he was ready to concentrate on football.

 

But he reportedly is spending this week meeting with Hollywood executives, and Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Wednesday the team has been informed Taylor will not participate in any of the team's offseason workouts.
