Pittman A Bronco?

Free agent RB Michael Pittman is reportedly close to signing a one-year deal with the Broncos.

I guess this means HC Mike Shanahan will start raving about him a couple weeks before the season starts. Pittman is likely to find a role as the third-down back in passing situations, but he isn't going to be much of a fantasy option unless he wins the starting job outright.

Winslow Still Not 100%

Recovering from offseason knee surgery, it's being reported that Browns TE Kellen Winslow is not healthy enough to participate in OTAs.

It was originally thought that Winslow was skipping activities because he is unhappy with his contract. Owners should keep track on how well Winslow trains this summer in training camp. He is currently rehabbing in San Diego.

Henry Not Ready

Broncos running back Travis Henry did not practice again today as he continues to heal from a hamstring injury. Henry, who battled numerous injuries in his first season with the Broncos in 2007, pulled his hamstring while running 100-yard sprints just prior to the team's passing camp. He missed all of last week but Broncos coach Mike Shanahan had hoped Henry would return by today.

How many times can Shanahan be disappointed with Henry? His absence gave extra work for tailbacks for RBs Selvin Young, Andre Hall, and rookie Ryan Torain.

Raving About Mayo

Mike Reiss of Boston.com reported "a few of the scouts and personnel people around the league that I spoke with before and after the draft were raving about LB Jerod Mayo, noting that he played at a high level in arguably college football's best conference (SEC), and is also a top-notch individual. As for Mayo starting, I'd suggest looking at it through a different lens - that of playing time. Because so much of the game is played in sub packages these days, I think the concept of starting is overrated, and more focus should be put on snaps played. And I think Mayo will immediately put himself in the mix with a solid percentage of play-time, whether that's as a starter, or in a sub package."

There are quite a few rookie LBs making buzz as the guy to target. Mayo could provide huge value if your fantasy opponents target the more sexier Will or Mike linebackers.

Romo Working Hard

Cowboys QB Tony Romo is working on some special things for next season. He just won't say what they are. "I don't want to tell you just because they're important to me and I want to continue to improve in certain areas," Romo said. "But I'm pretty excited about a couple areas that are taking shape. I think it's going to allow me to take the next step this year, hopefully."

HC Wade Phillips has praised the work ethic of Romo and says he is one of the hardest workers on the team. He may take a weekend trip here and there, but we think he is still a top-5 fantasy quarterback that is surrounded by talent.

Nelson Improving

Jags S Reggie Nelson has always been confident. But now he appears to be much more comfortable, too."Last year, I played a little bit slow," he said. "This year, I feel like I'm playing a lot faster. I'm studying my playbook. I'm better, just understanding the rules (of the defense) and stuff."

Nelson has all the tools to be a Ed Reed or Sean Taylor type safety, so keep him in mind when looking for quality safeties in your IDP league. He is young, athletic, and getting better and better. As a rookie, he recorded 62 tackles, five INTs, and one sack. Expect those numbers to be much better this year.

Thomas Bulks Up

Cowboys LB Zach Thomas has bulked up to 240 pounds, much more than his normal 225 pounds that he normally plays at during the season. ''I don't want to get too big or too stiff,'' Thomas said. ''I feel good out there on the field.''

Thomas believes the 3-4 defense works best for him and the WLB position should allow him to be very productive. He was once a beast in IDP leagues, but injuries and age should slow him down. If you draft him, be sure to surround him with other LBs.

Williams Skipping Workouts

It's being reported that Cowboys DB Roy Williams is skipping the team's OTAs to go boating with his family.

After it was reported that Williams didn't feel comfortable in HC Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme, the last thing he needs to do is miss any team activities. It's not likely that the team will trade him this year, but he will have to have a strong start to the 2008 season in order to keep his job.

Franklin Looking Good

Chiefs rookie WR Will Franklin has reportedly "looked as if he belonged" during the team's OTAs.

Any news coming from the Chiefs' receiving core should be taken lightly. Right now, Franklin is stuck behind receivers Devard Darling and Jeff Webb. So temper your enthusiasm if you are looking for that sleeper player for your squad. The only receiver worth drafting this year is Dwayne Bowe.

Winslow Absent Due To Injury?

According to the Dayton Daily News, TE Kellen Winslow's absence from minicamp has just as much to do with rehabbing from injury as it does a contract dispute. Winlow's agent Drew Rosenhaus had this to say: “I always say these are voluntary activities. They are not mandatory. And a player has the right to train on his own. Kellen is coming off offseason knee surgery and he’s doing his rehab and his training with a very fine trainer in his hometown of San Diego." “He will be at the Browns’ mandatory minicamp (June 10-12) and he will be at the mandatory training camp. So, what’s the big to do?”

Winslow put off surgery in order to play in the Pro Bowl and had surgery on his knee in February. It is no surprise that he is still rehabbing from the injury, giving him a legit excuse for skipping voluntary OTAs. That being said, everyone in the Browns' organization and beyond knows that Winslow wants a new deal and his lack of satisfaction with his current deal is playing at least some part in his absence. We will watch Winslow's rehab closely in order to determine if it will affect his playing status in any way.

Broncos Sign Pittman

The Broncos and free agent RB Michael Pittman have agreed to a new deal.

I guess this means HC Mike Shanahan will start raving about him a couple weeks before the season starts. Pittman is likely to find a role as the third-down back in passing situations, but he isn't going to be much of a fantasy option unless he wins the starting job outright. RB Travis Henry has missed practice because of a hamstring injury, so Pittman may be insurance.
