T.O. To be Drug Tested More Frequently

On the same day the Dallas Cowboys announced that wide receiver Terrell Owens had agreed to a contract extension with $13 million in guaranteed money, Owens was in New York meeting with NFL officials after being placed in the league's "reasonable cause" testing program for performance-enhancing drugs, sources told ESPN.

Owens was placed in the program because he missed day-of telephone calls to set up random tests, the sources said. A player that misses a test can be subject to disciplinary action, but because Owens had a "plausible" explanation, league administrators decided he would not be suspended or fined.

Instead, Owens can now be randomly tested for performance enhancers up to a maximum of 24 annual screenings, and these additional screenings can be required, if the NFL chooses to do so, for the remainder of his NFL career.

An NFL spokesman said the league would have no comment because of the confidentiality restrictions of the program. Cowboys officials had no immediate comment. Owens' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, was unavailable for comment, but his partner and brother, Jason Rosenhaus, said: "We're not allowed to comment on anything pertaining to that topic."

After receiving a letter from the NFL informing him of the action, Owens met with NFL officials on the morning of June 3 because he was in the New York area. Owens has since passed a test for performance enhancers, the sources said. The sources added that Owens has never had a positive test for any illegal substance.

Owens was warned that he risks a suspension if administrators experience a similar road block as they did when they attempted to reach him two weeks ago. On one occasion, the primary phone number Owens provided was that of Drew Rosenhaus. Subsequently, the sources said, the alternate phone number Owens provided went unanswered, except for an automated message that said: "The voice mailbox for this user is full." Owens told the league that his phone had not shown any record of its missed calls.

The testing program requires players to make themselves accessible and communicate their specific location when they are contacted for a test.

It was late in the afternoon of June 3 when Owens and the Cowboys held a news conference at the Cowboys' headquarters at Valley Ranch to announce the receiver's new three-year, $27 million contract extension with $13 million of new guaranteed money.

Unless Orville Redenbacher has been placed on the list of banned substances, I see no need to pay this any mind. The man has bad reactions to vicodin so I can't see him putting anything into that perfect scoring machine of a body but more Romo TD passes......

Nothing to see here folks, try again later....................

If he was a patriot the boards would be going crazy.

When your team develops a culture of cheating, you should expect negative feedback.

DEN has been accused of cheap shots along the O-line for years - some of it justified, some of it not so much and well within the rules. But because of their use of what are or seem to be underhanded tactics at times, I understand when people post criticism. What I don't do is whine like 2 year old Nancy about it, especially in threads that have nothing to do with it.

Owens has never tested positive to my knowledge, and to be honest I don't expect him to in the future.

He missed a freakin' phone call. Okay, he gets tested randomly more often per the CBA. BFD. Until he actually tests positive, this is a complete & utter non-story. And this is coming from someone who would gladly stick a barb in Owens if given the opportunity.

I don't really understand the crybaby icon... I'm a packers fan.

I recall a story about a certain steroid dealer who was linked to a former cowboy offensive lineman who offe'd himself last week... You can talk about developing a culture of cheating, but the cowboys have connections to a a roid dealer... I guess where their is smoke their is potentially fire doesn't apply here? :D

I'm not a Patriot fan by any stretch, but I do believe if he was in New England, this would be huge.

He missed more than a freakin phone call. The reports I've heard is that they were unable to reach him after multiple attempts. Owens wasn't too busy, but just didn't want to deal with it...

Yeah, because his voice mailbox was full. It wasn't that he didn't want to deal with it, it was that they couldn't leave a message - even though they called multiple times.

It was dumb, especially for a pro athlete with an agent, that neither could be reached. I don't see anything that would indicate anything other than some stupidity, though. In any case, the extra testing doesn't seem to be bothering Owens at all, which would further indicate it is no big deal.

The NFL knows about Moss but they won't dare touch the best WR in the NFL.

You know, I've tried my damnedest to understand that the only thing you contribute to the board is a little comic relief with your constant fishing that many readily bite on. But it's gotten real old.

WaterMan, meet the ignore list...
