Bengals receiver Johnson to have ankle surgery

Spent much of off-season pushing for trade

LOS ANGELES -- Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson will undergo ankle surgery Wednesday, according to a report by the NFL Network on Tuesday.

Johnson, who has spent much of the offseason voicing his displeasure with the organization and pushing for a trade, attended minicamp last week and worked out with the team Saturday, catching several passes from quarterback Carson Palmer.

Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said that Johnson seemed to be hindered by an ongoing ankle problem, which the team said bothered him at the end of last season. Johnson complained about soreness in the ankle on the first day of camp Thursday.

"He's got that ankle issue at the end of the season. They were trying to get it taken care of, it hadn't been taken care of, he needed to get it taken care of," Bratkowski said. "He's going against guys that have been out here 14, 16 practices. You're going to look that way when you have none. He worked hard."

The team has been pushing Johnson to have arthroscopic surgery on the ankle so he can be ready for training camp on July 27. Despite Johnson's continued lobbying for a trade, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis previously had said his star wideout will not be dealt.

A second-round of the Bengals in 2001, Johnson, 30, had 93 receptions for 1,440 yards and eight touchdowns last season. It was his six consecutive 1,000-yard season and the fourth time in the past five seasons he caught at least 90 balls.

Okay, I give. So why wasn't this taken care of in February?

Why? Because it's the offseason...HIS time. Why would he do something that is related to football and his team on HIS time? It used to amaze me how frequently players would delay off season surgery. No more. Players are selfish, by and large, and they want nothing to interfere with THEIR time.

Oh...I hope you all can read the sarcasm in there...

a lot of guys want to avoid training camp and so not want any activities related to their careers to interfere with THEIR offseason.

Fixed. This may be the case some times CH, however when the team is telling you that you need it and you choose not to, that's selfish. Now this moran misses more time.

While there is not much to like about 85 this offseason, this is no big deal IMO. The ankle bothered him most of last year, but he played on it. They expect him to be ready for training camp July 27. Sounds like a minor procedure to me.

How many games has this moran missed? He's played in all 16 games for six straight seasons... I guess I have more faith in one of the most consistent players in the league to know what he's doing.

The Ocho Stinko stuff is almost as annoying as people saying caddie got a flat tire blah blah blah.

I'm sure that by the time TC rolls around, it will be just as annoying.

Agreed, CJ has been very healthy and very productive; it is why I own him in ATAP dynasty and why I've turned down numerous offers to trade him.

I think what gets me more is the gamensmanship at play here...CJ has already missed 15-16 practices. Not training camp, mind you, but he is well behind the remainder of the players who have shown up. Why do the procedure now? Why not have it done in time to be healthy for the start of OTA's? That's my beef...the timing of it all.

This may very well be a "minor" procedure, but who knows what can happen: doctors find something they did not expect, infection can set in, etc. All of which can cause setbacks and make CJ miss that much more time. Again...the timing.

I think Chad Johnson put off the surgery for two reasons. The first that he wanted to see if he could heal with time, instead of being opened up.

A lot of vets don't like training camp, and this procedure will give him an excuse to miss a few days of TC.

I would have wanted this done a long time ago so he'd be ready and willing to participate in all of TC, but I'd also rather have Chad Johnson not doing insane touchdown celebrations with props, but that's not going to happen. I just accept Johnson for what he is... A jackass that is one of the best in the league at what he does...

And as far as getting an infection and what not... He's not on the Browns... They seem to be the only professional organization that can't seem to grasp preventing staph infections.

I really could care less about all of the CJ drama, what I do care about is how it affects Carson Palmer's numbers since I have him in a keeper league. Having CJ on the field opens things up for him. I like Housh but I don't think him with the other surrounding cast of WR's is as lethal.
