Giants' Bradshaw in jail in Virginia for probation violation

By Skip Wood, USA TODAY

New York Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw has been jailed in southwest Virginia since June 15 for an undisclosed probation violation.

Lt. Jeannie Patrick of the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail confirmed this morning that Bradshaw remains incarcerated. Bradshaw's attorney, Charles Stacey, was not immediately available for comment.

Bradshaw, 22, was sentenced to two years of probation for misdemeanor petty larceny in 2006 while a student at Marshall University. He pleaded guilty in Cabell County Circuit Court (W.Va)., of stealing a fellow student's PlayStation video game from a dorm room.

As a rookie last season, Bradshaw led all Giants rushers with 208 in the postseason in helping lead the team to a Super Bowl upset against the New England Patriots.

No other details were immediately available.

He didn't go to jail for stealing the Playstation game. He was sentenced to 2 years probation for stealing the Playstation game. He went to jail for violating the probation.

Ultimately his crime was taking some guys Playstation game. If whatever he did to violate his probation was serious enough to warrant going to jail for then that's fine, but at face value this seems a bit excessive to me.

So it's ok to steal video games with no threat of jail time?

I disagree.

First of all, I think that what he stole was a Playstation (possibly 2 or 3?).

Second of all, he either accepted a plea, or was sentenced to probabation... which is an agreement to behave or go to jail. If he couldn't meet the terms of his agreement, then he gets the punishment. That's why people aren't stealing your stuff right this minute.

That's Bradshaw's problem for accepting 2 years probation for stealing the game in his guilty plea and then violating that probation. If he didn't want that much probation or didn't think he could stay clean, he should have bargained it down for something that I agree is seemingly a bit minor (though we don't know if there were any extenuating circumstances of any kind). However, once he got into the system, he lot was cast.

Just curious, but why is he incarcerated and presumably guilty of probation violation in Virginia if he pled guilty in a West Virginia court?

That much I can agree on. My guess is he probably didn't have a very good lawyer.

True story - I got home from school when I was in the 8th grade. I was the only person home, dropping a deuce in my parents bathroom (not sure why in that bathroom as the other was closer to my room). Someone knocked several times, opened the door, and says, "Jason are you home?" So I come out of the bathroom to see 2 dudes running out of my house. I called 911 and they found the guys at the end of the street. What did they take? A Sega Genesis, and a few coins from my brothers half assed collection.

They didnt go to jail, so why the hell is Bradshaw in jail for this? I dont care that he violated his probabtion. Did he REALLY have to be on probation for something that minute?

Oh, and for whatever its worth, one of the guys that stole my Sega got killed i a car accident a few years later. He deserved it though... f-n prick.

Bradshaw in custody

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

ABINGDON, Va. — A former Graham star athlete and Super Bowl New York Giant is currently serving “a sentence” in a Southwest Virginia jail.

Ahmad Bradshaw, 22, who starred at Graham High School and Marshall University and is currently a running back with the NFL’s New York Giants, is serving a sentence at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon.

According to Lt. Mike Henegar, a spokesman for the jail, Bradshaw will “serve a certain amount of time” for a probation violation. He wouldn’t say when Bradshaw was charged or how long he had been jailed.

Henegar, who said he was limited to what he could say, would not reveal what the probation was related to, and he also couldn’t disclose the amount of time Bradshaw would serve at “this point in time.”

Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw jailed in southwest Virginia

BY OHM YOUNGMISUK and RALPH VACCHIANO

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITERS

Thursday, June 19th 2008, 10:26 PM

Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw has been in a Virginia jail since Sunday, serving a 30-day sentence for violating probation terms of a previously undisclosed juvenile offense.

Bradshaw reportedly voluntarily turned himself into the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon. When reached by telephone last night, James Bradshaw, his father, would only say that the probation violation had to do with a previous juvenile offense unrelated to the player's run-ins with the law while at the University of Virginia and Marshall University.

An officer at the jail refused to comment on Bradshaw, who was a star running back at Graham High School in Bluefield, Va. Bradshaw's attorney, Charles Stacy, said the running back has not been charged with any new crime that led to his violation of probation.

"Ahmad Bradshaw is currently serving a 30-day jail sentence in Abingdon Regional Jail in Virginia on a probation violation charged out of the Tazewell County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court," Stacy said in a statement. "The underlying charge in this matter stems from an offense that occurred while Mr. Bradshaw was a juvenile. Mr.Bradshaw has not been charged with any offense since being drafted by the New York Giants and is eager to put this matter behind him and be in training for the next season."

Bradshaw, 22, is scheduled to be released from jail before players report to training camp on July24. Bradshaw was already under scrutiny with the Giants, who took a chance on the troubled running back when they drafted him in the seventh round out of Marshall. General manager Jerry Reese told Bradshaw that the team would not tolerate any trouble after the running back pleaded guilty to stealing a video game console from a dorm room at Marshall in 2006. Charges were dropped, but Bradshaw was given two years' probation.

That came after Bradshaw was kicked out of the University of Virginia following an arrest for underage alcohol possession and reportedly resisting arrest in 2004.

Bradshaw cleaned up his image and last year he emerged as a playmaker for the Giants during their Super Bowl run. Graham High School football coach and athletic director Doug Marrs said Bradshaw might be a victim of a jealous individual. Marrs, who was Bradshaw's assistant coach at Graham, said he received anonymous hate mail after the school recently retired Bradshaw's number.

"It's just a childhood incident, that is all it was," Marrs said last night of Bradshaw's undisclosed juvenile transgression that resulted in his probation. "He's done nothing (lately). This is so blown out of proportion. It's just a deliberate attempt to hurt a kid that has done well ... to hurt his image. When you live in a small town, there seems to be more jealousy than in other places like a large city. I just know that he is clean since the Marshall incident."

The Giants said in a statement that they were aware of Bradshaw's predicament and that it stems from an offense dating to before he joined the team.

^^^ What was the Violation??? ^^^

Whats up with all the silence on the actual violation of probation? Did he buy a Wii or something???

I know nothing about law, but did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night...!

Seriously, my best guess is that, because the infraction occurred as a juvenile, it is probably being kept under wraps because of his age. I'd also guess that once his stay is complete, the infraction will be expunged from his record.

maybe the original infraction occured as as juvenile, but the violation had to occur as an adult... that's what I want to know about...

speaking as a guy who dealt Bradshaw for Heap (2 year contract) and a second round rookie pick
