Kevin Jones

Free agent Kevin Jones made cuts on his surgically reconstructed knee Thursday and ran a short shuttle in 4.3 seconds.

For perspective, the best 20-yard shuttles at this February's Combine were posted by Rashard Mendenhall (4.18) and Felix Jones (4.19). Marshawn Lynch performed the drill in 4.58 seconds in 2007, so Jones' short-area quickness doesn't look bad at all. Jones will hold a final workout on June 28.

NFL: Kevin Jones makes a speedy recovery

Associated Press

Kevin Jones darted to the right, planted his foot, pivoted, and sprinted back across a patch of grass. "That is what teams can't believe I can do," Jones said yesterday morning after completing a shuttle run in Saline, Mich.

Jones, a Cardinal O'Hara High graduate who played for Virginia Tech, has a workout scheduled for scouts on June 28 in Saline, a town about 40 miles west of Detroit. The former Detroit Lions running back has been rehabbing his surgically repaired knee at Brookside Golf Course, in a pool, and in the basement of a holistic medicine practitioner and sports agent.

"I've never worked out like this, and I feel great," Jones said.

Surgeon James Andrews performed surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Jones' right knee in January and told him it would take up to 10 months to get back on the field. Jones believes he will be able to go through noncontact drills with the team that signs him during training camp next month.

The Eagles, New England, Chicago, Green Bay, Tennessee, Tampa Bay, Denver, Kansas City, Buffalo and the New York Jets are among the teams that have shown interest in Jones.

They better not, I'm fine with what we have thank you very much!

I wouldn't think they'd want him and his agent didn't get much of a reaction when they contacted the Bears. Tampa?

I just don't get this... They have Lendale White. Sure, he's not the kind of back that can be featured, but he's certainly fine in a 2-back system. They drafted Chris Henry last year, who appears to have some promise. And then they picked up another Henry-esque player in Chris Johnson with this year's draft. Now they want to add Jones?

Help me out here: where are they going with this?

I think you may be selling LenDale a little short. Remember he played through pain and a knee injury last year... Reports are that Henry will struggle to even make the active roster this upcoming season, which sounds like they've soured on him after a year. Chris Johnson in my opinion is nothing more than a third down back at best. The guy wasn't good in college, although he put up massive combine numbers... If they were to sign Jones, I could see him taking the carries that Chris Brown had last year, and Johnson picking up the other stuff... The Johnson pick is still insane to me.

I do think that White/Jones would be a nice two back system...

I have to disagree. Lendale White is not a featured back, even if healthy. He always had Reggie Bush as the lightning to his thunder. They need Chris Johnson, who I think you are selling way short. And uh... ... Chris Johnson wasn't good in college? Are you sure? In his freshman season, he had 32 receptions and carried the ball 134 times. Followed that up with an alright sophomore campaign where he caught 35 balls and ran it 176 times. Had an injury-marred junior season, but had a monster senior season: 1,423 yards rushing, 528 receiving (37 catches), and 23 total TDs. Not good in college? :D

I will agree that the Johnson pick was a little bit of a head-scratcher. But I guess they're just going to give up on Henry.

I was thinking it would be a situation - with Norm Chow still at the helm - with White/Johnson being the new thunder/lightning combo. I just don't see how Jones fits in. Their situation last year with White/Brown/Henry all getting carries was a mess. I was hoping they'd clean things up, but maybe they will go at it how you suggested. I think it'd be a mistake.

They have no direction since Reese left. Who is the GM? It isn't Reinfeldt is it? I know the guy. He went to school with my sister and is a money guy not a personnel guy unless he really changed. Every year they draft RB's too early. I don't think they have any direction. They draft players they don't need and let players go they do.

Ever since Reese left their drafts and personnel moves seem :D

I too think you're selling White very short. Go and look at his college achievements: he owns the USC record for TDs scored by a RB. Now think about that for a moment: OJ, Anthony Davis, Marcus Allen. He outperformed those guys in the TD department WHILE sharing with Bush. He certainly had a rough rookie year, but he started finding the end zone again in 2007. I think his trajectory might very well be similar to MB3: two or three years and he might be The Man.

Then again, I've always liked him coming out of college (hard thing for a ND fan to say) and if you dig around here deep enough a few years back I'm on record as saying he'll have a more impactful career than Bush. Jury's still out on that, but I don't think I'm wrong as of yet.

All that being said, I'm guessing KJ to Ten would push one of the other two off the team.

KJ must be asking for a ton of jack if he's looked so awesome in workouts and yet no one has signed him.

Either that, or teams have done some research and actually watched his game tapes...

Not to worry, though. As soon as some team suffers an injury to a top RB in preseason, KJ's phone ought to be ringing.

Why would Buffalo need help? Fred Jackson is a a good replacement...If Lynch can not play.

IF Lynch couldn't play for whatever reason, BUF is supposed to count on a 2nd year player with an 8 game career history, a 2nd year player with a grand total of 29 carries in his career, and a 6th round rookie to propel its running game all season?

The last time I checked Lynch was a 2nd year player also, with a 13 game career history. And Jackson was the back up last year and seemd to do pretty good with his 58 carriers.

I want to be certain that I'm not misinterpretting your position.

So you are stating that BUF should have no problem whatsoever going into the coming season with Jackson, Wright, & Oman as their RB corps were Lynch to be sidelined for any reason?

Kevin Jones darted to the right, planted his foot, pivoted, and sprinted back across a patch of grass. "That is what teams can't believe I can do," Jones said yesterday morning after completing a shuttle run in Saline, Mich.

Jones, a Cardinal O'Hara High graduate who played for Virginia Tech, has a workout scheduled for scouts on June 28 in Saline, a town about 40 miles west of Detroit. Hey I grew up in Saline!

That's a loaded question...right now no. If he was out the entire year due to a injury sure....I would be hard pressed to find a team that wouldn't be if there #1 went down.

I'm sure ever team would love to sign Jones just as a insurance policy, but if there is no fire why would you call the fire department?

It's like saying if the Eagles lost Westbrook (which will happen) they would be lost. I'm sure his back ups are not any better than Lynch's. If not worse. If anything we should learn by the past and look at the Green bay Packers Or Tampa Bay. Who was Ryn Grant last year at this time or Ernest Graham??

I would much rather rely on young backs that are unproven and are not labeled "injury cases" . Not to mention a hell of a lot cheaper.

That's a persuasive argument. Well played.
