Looking for a sleeper D?

An article in the Rocky Mountain News this morning details the career of new DEN DC Bob Slowik. Upon reading the article, I discovered that he's considered to have a brilliant mind and that there are a plethora of excuses as to why his Ds over the years as a DC with 3 different teams has sucked. His tenure at his last 2 stops as DC lasted exactly 1 year.

With the Broncos, Bob Slowik will head his fourth NFL defense. How his units have ranked in total defense and scoring, and the teams' records at his three previous stops:

Year, Team Yards Points W-L2004, Packers* 25th 23rd 10-6 1999, Browns 31st 29th 2-14 1998, Bears 14th 23rd 4-12 1997, Bears 12th 29th 4-12 1996, Bears 12th 12th 7-9 1995, Bears 19th 22nd 9-7 1994, Bears* 13th 10th 9-7 1993, Bears 4th 3rd 7-9

On a positive note, no one has to guess who Shanahan's scapegoat will be when this season ends...

Hmmm...what was he doing between 2000 and 2003? As for Shanny, why not hire someone competent instead of someone who can be his scapegoat? Makes NO sense at all.

Shanahan had a very good DC last year, Bailey & Bly simply refused to play hard corners and the front 7 was athletically challenged with the exceptions of DJ Williams and Elvis Dumervil. That combination doomed Bates' D from the start. So he fires Bates & installs this guy? Just another example of Shanahan living on his SB Ws. It's getting real old...

(disclaimer: you're smarter than me, but on this, I'm more passionate...)

If his talent wouldn't or couldnt' follow his scheme, then that's his problem to fix. He either couldn't fix the problem or was too stubborn.

It's a player's job to follow his assignment as he's instructed by the coach. Bates' D plays hard corners - it's a critical key to what his D does. Bailey & Bly simply refused to play this way and instead played a 6-10 yd cushion. If a player refuses to follow instructions as given by the DC, then it is on the HC to either make the player perform as required or to sit their ass on the bench. That goes directly to Shanahan.

If Bailey & Bly had played hard corners and had failed because they weren't capable of doing so, and then Bates didn't make adjustments, then the onus goes on Bates.

On top of that, the lack of capable D players in the front 7 goes directly to Shanahan's inability to draft decent D players over the past decade, as well to a lesser extent to some of his FA foul ups. Bates couldn't make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t, so he gets the blame? That's BS. And no thanks to Zach Thomas as a MLB - geez, the guy already takes dumps made of copralite rather than sh*t as it is...

We'll have to just disagree then cuz with the same talent, Slowik did a better job. It was obvious to all that Bates 2-gap D wasn't working and instead of scraping it for that season and re-visiting it the next off-season, he pushed on.

I say Bates refused to scrap it cuz he isn't very good at other schemes. I say he's a one-trick-pony, eventho he's great at that one trick.

Ummmmm - Slowik hasn't had a season as the DEN DC. Bates was the DC last season. Coyer was the DC who ran the 2 gap scheme the year before.

So I want to clarify your position:

Bates D sucks because he had 5 games to install it and the players refused to play it as he asked - which you claim is Bates' fault; and despite Slowik's track record of running piss poor Ds every time he's been a DC and having a 1 year tenure the past 2 jobs he has had as a DC, that he's going to succeed here in DEN?

Yup! That's my position.

Am I saying that Slowik will install a SB def? Nah, but he demonstrated that he could do a better job last year than Bates with the same players (as shown in my edited post above that I edited while you were posting).

And yeah, he won't "succeed" cuz even if he does a great job, he'll be the scapegoat when they don't make the playoffs.

Fair enough. One more reason to watch the Donkeys a bit more carefully. I think Slowik doesn't understand overall D concepts at the NFL level, and his track record is a product of that. We'll see. I hope that you're right...

For IDP, Champ is Champ.

The DEN MLB spot can post very nice tackle numbers. Whomever wins the spot (even Webster, Gawd help us) will probably be a solid #2 FF MLB and a good FF #3 LB.

Curious to see who wins the SS spot - it can post decent numbers also. I'm hoping Barrett shows something, but I suspect McCree will start the season there.

Crowder is a nice under-the-radar sleeper at DE because he's capable of being on the field in both run & pass situations and he showed a bit of giddy-up at times last year.

Good read on this thread. Williams absolutely can't play the middle........ever. He's just completely lost. He just can't read a play that fast. I agree that the defense will improve. Probably middle of the road D. At least I"m hoping.

here's some numbers for the first five games and the last five games:

yards points allowed

1,666 136

1,425 114

They had three more turn-overs in the last five games and they allowed 13 less first-downs.

How did Slowik get better production out of the same defense at the end of the season? (A def that's been known to tire out at the end in recent years)

It could also be said that the teams they played near the end of the season where either out of the playoff race all together or were in the middle of shutting it down for the playoff run. I've seen what Bates can do if the players buy into the scheme. I was furious when he wasn't named the head coach of the packers... The guy can coach.
