My wife got me this for my birthday, and I think I should write a review out here for the beers I get, because although I'm a well-traveled drinker... these beers seem to be foreign micros. Very rare.'

So we begin:

Brasserie Dieu Ciel brewery from Ontario, CA

"Route des epices"

Rye beer brewed with Peppercorns

(the really bad word)ing gross.

I feel bad, because I couldn't make it through one half of those beers before dumping it out, and this is the first month... and I know it wasn't cheap. I should hold a contest here at the Huddle where the winner gets 11 of these beers from me. Or maybe the loser should, and would be forces to drink them.

Peppercorns? Fricking peppercorns? What were they thinking?. You take a sip and it's like, "Ok... this isn't bad beer and... ACK! GUHHHHHKK!! GAAAKK!! Get that awful taste out of my mouth!!!"

Luckily, I just realized that only half of the case is these awful beers.

The other half is:

Brasserie Dieu Ciel brewery's

"Rosee d'Hibiscus"

Beligian style wheat ale with brewed with spices and hibiscus flowers.

So, based on the fact that the other beer from Brasserie was apparently made by people who smoke unfiltered Chesterfields all day and put tabasco sauce in their coffee... and the fact that Belgian wheats are not my favorites... this beer started with extremely low expectations.

It's pink. The beer is pink. I've never eaten a hibiscus flower, so I don't know what to expect.

I'm prepared for grossness and carefully take a sip.

It's... not terrible. It's like when I went to see "Can't Hardly Wait" in the theater and was expecting the worst movie ever, yet it's not.

The hibiscus seems to make the belgian a little smoother and a little sweeter. I probably like it better than most Belgian Wheats... but if you normally like Belgian Wheats, you probably wouldn't.

Great reviews.

My question is why does the first month of the International Beer of the month club come from California.

Hmmm... interesting. That was supposed to be an abbreviation for Canada. But there is an Ontario, Calfornia... which is what I typed. And, when I go to look up their brewery to be more exact... I find that they are actually from Quebec. So... umm... yeah. The beer must be Mexican.

  • 1 month later...

Got a new case! This time it's 24 bottles of St. Ambroise from the McAuslan Brewing company in Montreal, Quebec.

Ok... so the first two selections from my International Beer of the Month Club are from Quebec.

12 bottles of Biere Noire A L'Avoine Oatmeal Stout

12 bottles of Biere Blonde Pale Ale

Both beers are heavy and flavorful. Nothing amazing tastewise... the Oatmeal stout is really thick and chocolaty.

But this beer tried to kill me.

So, I didn't realize they were twist off tops, and I used my fridge-mounted bottle opener to pop the top. I didn't realize that the glass had cleanly broken off at the top of the rim, and I poured the beer in a glass. I took a big mouthful of the beer and felt a small piece of something in my mouth. Yup. Little shard of glass. I found 2 more in my mouth, afraid to swallow. I kept rinsing out my mouth because I can just imagine swallowing a little shard of glass and ripping up my esophagus.

Anyway. It's an ok beer.

Look, pal, if you want European beer, you should sign up for the InterCONTINENTAL BotM Club.

Anyway, I'm not the continental that Atomic is...but the person who provided the beer for my draft this evening certainly was introducing us to the "National BotM Club"...the flavors were:

- Hamms Glorious (maybe it was Golden*) Draft

- PBR

- Old Mil

- Schaefer

- Milwaukee Classic Ice (it wasn't "classic" and perhaps not even "ice" but I'm pretty sure it was brewed in Milwaukee)

- Blatz Light

* - perhaps it was Hamms Classic Draft

Tell your wife I will get these beers to you for half what she's paying now and she can sleep well knowing she is supporting AMERICAN jobs and companies.
