NEW YORK - The NFL implemented a new code of fan conduct today, warning that spectators who misbehave will be ejected from stadiums and barred from coming back.

The policy, first recommended by commissioner Roger Goodell at league meetings in April, is aimed at conduct that the league said "detracts from the game day experience."

It includes bans on:

* Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, or illegal.

* Drunkenness and signs of alcohol impairment that result in irresponsible behavior.

* Foul or abusive language or obscene gestures.

* Interference with the progress of the game, including throwing objects onto the field.

* Failing to follow instructions of stadium personnel.

* Verbal or physical harassment of fans from the opposing team.

"The in-stadium experience is critically important to the NFL, our clubs and our fans and it will be a major focus this season," Goodell said in a statement. "We are committed to improving the fan experience in every way we can — from the time fans arrive in the parking lot to when they depart the stadium."

The league also left teams the option of adding additional provisions to the code based on local circumstances. It said the guidelines would be contained in mailings to fans and signs posted at stadiums.

Radical concept and love the idea, but good luck enforcing this. How many security people are there for any given game? And they're going to keep 50-75000+ fans in line? OK......
When I saw the banned actions I thought the same thing. Wasn't everything on that list already an ejectable action in every stadium already? I know the back of every ticket I get at local sporting events says something about being able to eject people if they don't behave.

You have to think that this was brought on by the behavior of the teams closest to the league office in recent years...COUGHJETSFANSCOUGH

Kudos for the effort, but we're a little late here. Alcohol sponsors are just about the biggest dollars that the NFL gets. They have conceived an animal that has grown way beyond their control. I honestly don't really go to games anymore unless I can sneak onto the field or into a press box or suite. I'm only 29 and am not supposed to offend easily, but I have seen some things in NFL stadiums the past few years that make me start to be disgusted by your average fan in attendance of an NFL game. It has turned into a WWF event. You guys are 100% correct, at this point it is going to take hundreds of cops to try and enforce this stuff if they truly want to have any success. I don't know that the cities and teams can afford it. It isn't like there are tons of extra cops just hanging around all the time. We have a hard time just trying to keep our downtown areas somewhat rid of violence and crime.

So, did Goodell comment on how he feels the new rules will improve the enjoyment level of the dozens of fans left at each game?
