Colts-Panthers pre-season

The Panthers have looked very good throgh the entire 1st quarter. Williams was busting runs all over the place. If he keeps this up it's going to be hard for the rookie to steal much time from him. Very impressive showing offensively and defensively as well.

I wouldn't count big runs vs Colt run D as esp impressive.

Speaking of running what the fark w/Colts' RBs - OL that pathetic?

Lorez. looking as good as the stats show anyone? (and most of the rest of the team sucking as bad as it sounds?)

I think Lorenzen is coming up big to snag what is probably the best gig in the NFL... backup to Peyton.

Doesn't get much more cush than that which is perfect for a QB of Lorenzen's circumference.

Following in the brothers thread vein, if Lorenzen takes the #2 role from Sorgi he will go from being Eli's backup to Peyton's backup. I wonder if any NFL player has ever backed up two brothers let alone done so in consecutive seasons.

He's nimble for his frame. I always liked watching him when he got play time in NY.

Also, Delhomme only threw one pass. Anything to worry about? Or was he only in for the first couple series which were almost all running and both short fields?

His frame? That's a good one. I'm very nimble for my fat ass frame too. :D

You speak the truth. However, Peppers abused the colts left tackly whenever he was in as well. Now that's impressive.

No way. Colts love Sorgi, despite any reason whatsoever to do so. It's kinda like Obama for Prez this year (wins the job despite himself). Lorz. will be lucky to get a QB3 job.

Yeah that's what I heard too...

NFC South

We hear Panthers rookie RB Jonathan Stewart is still being nagged by a sore right big toe, on which he had surgery in March. Stewart has been trying to work through the pain, but it’s not going away and he’s been limited in practice because of it. Sources in Carolina said, however, that this isn’t a case of the Panthers rushing their rookie back into the fold too quickly after an injury. Stewart has been impressive in drills thus far, so even if the pain continues into the season, there’s a good chance he’ll continue to play through it.

from Six Kings "Whispers" thread.

I was at the game and the Panthers looked great early on. Had them stopped at 3rd and long an Peppers blew past Ugoh and sacked Sorgi causing the fumble. The Panthers were trying to establish the run and when DW started gashing the Colts D (remember no Sanders or Freeney last night) he hit for some nice 8 - 14 yard runs before pushing it in for the TD. Next series, the Panthers again got pressure on Sorgi forcing the bad throw to Adam Seward (backup MLB - Beason sat out last night) and ran it back from the 20 to the 10. The Panthers went back to the run again and first play DW takes it in for a TD about 9 yards out.... Panthers up 14-0 before within the first 5 minutes of play. Jake had only one throw for his very limited time on the field (2 series and they planned to take him out). I would not worry about his elbow as he mentioned on the radio driving home from the game that he wanted to throw it around a little, but when you start your two drives at the 20 yd. line and the 9 it is hard to get the passing game ramped up when the running game looks very good. The thing that I liked seeing was the OL looks much better than last year and they were opening plenty of holes for DW.

Matt Moore game in and looked very good running with the first team once Jake left and took them in for two nice drives that ended in FGs. He looks like he will be a good backup should something happen to Jake during the season. The second and third string came in and that is when the Colts started making their run as Brett Basenez looked rusty and didn't show me much. Lorezen looked OK, but with a few guys missing from the first team the 2nd team and 3rd string for the Panthers was leaving guys open and the ability to get pressure on the QB, hence, his nice numbers. Before you guys all get excited about Lorezen taking over the backup spot, remember, Sorgi was under contanst pressure, but IF Lorezen had started the game he would have likely been met with the pressure and performed at a must lower level than when he was facing the Panthers 2nd and 3rd stringers.

The three key things for the Panthers that I take away from last night were 1) The OL looked must improved and that bodes well for both DW and JStew running the ball 2.) Peppers looked completely different than last year and was dominate against Ugoh at his new position at right DE (his natural position) 3.) DW looked very good getting 55 yards on 9 carries including 2 TDs. I will have to wait to see how JStew does in the preseason, but it looks like DW will likely be the starter and a big part of the Panthers gameplan this season. I would say bump him up a little in your rankings after last night.
