Mendenhall vs Stewart

Until Mendenhall proves he can run against NFL defenses I say Stewart. I think Mendenhall will be a bust, personally. He was second string until P. Thomas left. He was a product of a system that created huge lanes, ask Bush the NFL is a different game. Just a gut feeling and the above are my only reasons. even if Stewart is half way good he will be better than Mendenhall. Sorry Steeler Fans.

Stewart and bush played in the same weak conference.

I saw that coming a mile away.

My point is that if Bush looks like a stud in college playing against d-2 personnel is it unfair to say the same about Stewart?

Also, with no KO Steve on the field the first 2 weeks it could be rough for him coming out of the blocks.

I'm not sure about being a bust, but, I think it will take him longer to succeed than some are predicting. In his first pre-season game on Friday, he showed impressive vision on a few runs, bouncing outside on one, and making a nice inside cut on another. The problem I'm seeing is that he doesn't seem to understand that in the NFL, you can't dance behind the LOS, when nothing is there, you have to hit the whole hard and try to grind out 2 or 3. He also runs way to upward at this point. I think they are correctable, and I still see success coming for Mendenhall, but, like I said, it may take longer than most expect.

"Until Mendenhall proves he can run against NFL defenses I say Stewart."... Sorry buddy but that has to be one of the dumbest and illogical statements I have seen in a while. Do I need to explain why?

Can we wait and see if Stewart can even beat Williams for the job?

I would have to give the edge to Medenhall just for the fact that he plays for a far superior team who loves to run the ball. The Steelers have put out elitle talent more so then the Panthers have in history and more so in recent years....that shows me that they are better at evaluating talent and their teams system works better.

If you understood what kind of system Zook ran at ILL, you'd understand the statement. I can only assume that you don't, because the statement is right on target. ILL uses a spread O and has a tremendous athlete at QB with Juice Williams - many teams used a "spy" on him. They also have a WR in Arrelious Benn who is too big, strong, and athletic for most CBs to handle one-on-one, requiring at least partial commitment from another D player to manage him downfield.

When you take 3 D players out of the equation in regard to immediate reads on plays and then you add the spread O that ILL ran, it created unnaturally wide running lanes and allowed the ILL O-line to create numerical advantages and get unusually good angles at the point of attack in run plays. That's why some don't think that Mendenhall will see his success translate to the pro level. He played behind Pierre Thomas and had a tough time getting on the field until Thomas graduated from ILL, and Thomas isn't exactly a prolific stud RB at the NFL level. Mendenhall also has a pitty-pat running style that he could get away with in college but won't translate into the pros, as seams are much smaller and close much quicker with pro D players' ability to read and react.

Hardly an illogical concern at all, and the only thing dumb about the sentiment is someone calling it dumb.

SO did JJ Arrington and Marshawn Lynch, it is not about what conference they come from. Polkaseat you sound like a Big Slow or Little 12 fan crapping on the Pac 10. Face the facts they have out up some nice defensive talent lately, and while not a fan of Pac10, I would point to the way their soft teams handle OOC games every year. Not wanting to jack the thread but if you want I will explain it better in the college forum.

Stewart will have the better career, but I see Mendenhall having the better year beacuse of the line. Big Ben wont be passing like crazy this season and it is easier to get linemen to run block than it is to get them to gel in pass protection. Tough games this year will lead to the Squeelers runnning more and Mendenhall will get goal line carries. I am a big JStew fan and wnated him on my roster bad, but his coach has proven that no matter how talented the other backs on his roster are he picks one and rides him into the ground. Too much risk in that Fox could pick Williams to be that horse.

First off, Mendenhall is not looking like he is going to land the goal-line carries, as he has done poorly with them all camp. Second, the Steelers offensive line is their biggest concern this season. They were bad last year, and they lost Faneca. Word out of camp is that they have impressed, but, I'll be pleasantly surprised if they perform well. I have major concerns. As for the Steelers not passing, I have to disagree. They, of course, will try to run the ball, but, with their schedule and weak offensive line, they will have to rely on Big Ben and the passing game a lot this season. With their schedule, I see a good possibility of them playing by behind a bit more than usual.

P.S. Great work referring to them as "Squeelers" - very original

Nice feedback. I know all Steeler fans want to see this guy take the reins of the running game & take off with it, but it's that dancing behind the LoS that worries me the most. It speaks to a lack of decisiveness and not exploding into a seam when it appears, and instead reacting to the seam after it has been open for a second and starts to close.

He may learn, but he also may be a type of RB that coaches will have to adjust to and aim him at a hole and hope the O-line can get the hole open before he arrives. Those guys aren't special RBs, and they aren't good short yardage backs.

Keep us up to date. And what the hell kind of user name is Menudo, anyhow?

So you think that if a line cant even run block they will go to more passing plays?

No. I think they will TRY to establish the running game. However, I think when they get behind in games, and the running game isn't producing, they will turn to the passing game. Also, I think it will be hard for them to resist their talent in the passing game, with Santonio, Ward, Heath Miller, Nate Washington & Limas Sweed. Also, though he takes a lot of sacks, Roethlisberger is very good of getting out of the pocket and making plays. Just a hunch, but, I think the Steelers will throw the ball a decent amount this year, similar to last year's numbers in the passing game. This won't happen because they don't want to run the ball, but, because of their game situations.

I agree with you completely. The dancing behind the line simply will not work. However, on the two runs I mentioned where he had success, he did show some excellent vision and strong acceleration against the Eagles first team defense. I think he will show signs this year, but, consistency will be a problem. As I've said often, people wrote off Willie Parker way too soon. He was leading the NFL rushing prior to breaking his leg, and the Steelers are talking about giving him first crack at goal-line carries and also getting him more 3rd down reps.

Although he takes a lot of sacks he is very good at getting away from pressure

I think they will air it out this year. But this wont happen because they wont want to run ball, but will because they will have to.

I love squeeler fans

GO BROWNS!!!!!

Are you really this stupid ?

You don't see a situation where a QB can be good at getting away from pressure AND get sacked a lot ??? Anyone who has seen Roethlisberger knows he is mobile, but, he got sacked a ton the last two seasons.

On the 2nd statement, yes, they will want to establish the run, but, I don't see them having a ton of success with that. Also, they will be behind in quite a few games and need to throw to stay in it. :D DO YOU UNDERSTAND ?

Squeeler fans - you are very clever and original, great job :D

By the way, do I need to tell you what the Steelers have done to the Browns over the last, well, pretty much always....

Its a new day Steeler fan.

I don't know what you have seen, but Ben seems to get away from defenders draped around his legs and waist more than any QB I ever recall.
