49ers QB race

Does the 2008 49ers QB race remind anyone of last years QB competition in Cleveland? Seems like last year, CLE had a very similar situation in which one QB started one week, then had a bad practice, then the next QB did the same.

I know the recieving core (TE included) are very different, but does anyone see a similar situation panning out with one of the QBs pretty much coming in and playing much better than advertised?

Discuss.

I am thinking more about the Dolphins QB race only because each QB seems to like his own receiver out of the top 3....

I recently read something about this but I don't recall where or which QB liked which receiver...

the only one I like out of the bunch is Ginn jr., but if he's not getting the right QB to throw him the ball, that can be a problem...

FWIW

Coach Mike Nolan confirmed on his radio show Tuesday morning that J.T. O'Sullivan is currently leading the 49ers' quarterback competition.

Nolan is clearly deferring to coordinator Mike Martz here, as Martz is an O'Sullivan backer and he played poorly in the preseason opener (no points, two turnovers in a quarter and a half). Alex Smith is second on the depth chart, while Shaun Hill is getting no practice snaps. We've seen nothing from O'Sullivan to have confidence in him as even a last-ditch fantasy pick.

? Hill looked good late last year. Just a lucky run?

I'm thinking its Alex Smith who gets the nod come regular season. However, currently J.T. is leading because he already knows the Martz system so in Mike Nolan's coach speak J.T. is the the guy, currently. From my understanding Alex Smith has the strongest arm of the three, is the smartest of the three, and Mike Nolan is going to either win with Alex Smith, or be cut from the franchise with Alex Smith.

Everything I have heard locally has pointed to JT having the edge on knowing the system, where Smith and Hill have struggled a bit to learn it. Smith is still struggling to deal with taking snaps under center and being forced to make precise reads (he played, as everyone here already knows, in a spread offense in college). Hill started in a two-way competition with Smith, but has been out of some practices with either a minor injury or fatigue.

JT's biggest problem will be dealing with controlling himself in the games. He seemed okay in their first preseason game, but he tried to force way too much (the pick was a desperation 'Look at me, I'm Brett Favre!' play, the fumble was from just not getting down properly). If he can learn to control himself he can probably run the offense-- and given his limited experience and the 'here's the keys to a preseason game, make us believe we should stick with you' tryout... I'm not entirely surprised.

Long term, I don't think we really have a handle on how good Smith could be once he knows the system and is comfortable... but the signs are not good for him right now. I'd have my money on Sullivan as the starter come opening day if things don't change drastically from today. Smith will likely be #2, and Hill #3.

In other news, I know people have been talking about Morgan for a while now, and probably more given his good showing in the first preseason game, but I'm here to pile on. In training camp, the coaching staff was resting Bruce a lot, Battle and Johnson both missed time with injuries, and Morgan was basically taking their reps throughout camp. He's gotten a LOT of work with the first team offense and has been ridden by their WR coach pretty heavily. I doubt he'll land a starting gig at this point (given Bruce's stature and Johnson's contract), but it wouldn't shock me to see him on the field a bit this season as a 3rd/4th receiver, and if he does well to see more action. Martz can get a lot out of slot receivers, and he might be the best overall WR on the club right now (not as smart or experienced as Bruce, and maybe not quite as athletic as Johnson, but more athletic that Bruce at this stage and smarter than Johnson). I'm not saying you even have to draft him... just keep an eye on him as he could be a good early/midseason waiver/fa pickup, especially if Johnson or Bruce get hurt (or if Johnson falls out of favor with the coaching staff).

I thought Smith was some kind of Doogie Howser genius so i'm having a hard time figuring out why he's struggling to learn the offense.

I wanted to touch on the 'Smith is a genius' thing in my original post and didn't have the Urban Meyer (his college coach) quote handy, but here it is:

"It's going to be interesting in San Francisco," Meyer said. "Alex is an extremely quick learner. However, he's a guy that, until he understands it, he is nonfunctional. He is a guy that -- I keep hearing how Brett Favre kind of makes something out of nothing and is a person that runs around to make a play -- Alex Smith is not that kind of player. Alex Smith is a person that, once he is taught, has to learn it all. He might struggle early, but once he gets it, he gets it."

.......

"I'm going to be anxious to watch his development with the 49ers. Alex is so careful with the ball. His touchdown-to-interception ratio the last 2 years was phenomenal (47 touchdowns and seven interceptions). That's because, unless he knows exactly what's going on, he won't throw it. He won't just try to guess and take a shot. He has to know.

"That's why, early in his career, and early in our career with him at Utah, he was not an effective passer, because he really didn't understand. Once he understood, there was no one better. He learns quickly, though. But he's not a guy that you throw the ball out there and tell him, 'Go play.' He wants to know what is exactly expected of him and then he becomes a dynamite player.'

This quote is what prompted me to say that Smith may not be the starter week 1, and he may not start this year, but he's still only like 24 years old and could be in the mix of things end of this year or next season. This very weakness of his is probably why he's been so ineffective... given the Niners have switched offensive coordinators pretty much every year he's been in the league.

Good info. It seems like they might as well give him one more shot and the best way to learn would be on the field. But what do i know.
