So whats your take on this. I know they say Alexander has lost it and that C.Benson has never had it. But something tells me. One of the guys, if not both will end up playing somewhere this season. Has anyone heard anything? I have a 24 man roster in a 12 man league. And we dont have to start cutting down rosters till week 4. So im stashing them both till at less then. Just in case.

I am thinking that SA is just done. And Benson will show up again, probably, but it will require a team to need to repplace an injured backfield during the season or it will wait uintil next year when Benson gets over himself and likely ends up just as RB depth sopmewhere. BIut I think we have seen the last of Alexander.

Pretty much what I was going to post - Benson is still young, he may rebound to contribute somewhere, or at least some desperate team may take a chance on him (hey, if busts like Thomas Jones, Tyrone Wheatley, and Ron Dayne can find a second life, ANYBODY can - though they didn't have Benson's piss-poor attitude).

Alexander is old, washed-up, and most importantly, wealthy. He doesn't need the grief.

Drafting either one of these players this year is like the guys who drafted Barry Bonds in baseball drafts.

Sorry, Gil. Don't see the parallel here. And yes, I drafted Bonds in a league this year. And I *hate* the guy. But consider:

* Bonds hit 28 HRs, hit .276 and had a ridiculous 1.045 OPS last year (for a bad team)... and since this is not the forum to discuss baseball, we'll just say those are pretty good stats (especially for fantasy purposes)... should also mention there was more "serious" talks of him going to another team in the MLB's pre-season

* Benson, on the other hand, had a dismal 2007, with a pedantic 3.4 ypc and 4 TDs when he was supposedly his teams "#1".... and let's not forget all the off-field issues he's had in the off-season...

* And Alexander had an equally-as-bad 3.5 ypc and 4 TDs, also as "the #1".... plus he's just old.

The only parallel that's even somewhat plausible is all three players were dumped by teams that supposedly relied on them and that there is/was speculation (but again, of varying degrees) of them signing on elsewhere. But the differences in production are significant enough to call the comparison foolish.

Wasn't a rip on you, but all signs pointed to no production and a wasted draft pick. Sure, you can take a flyer, but it's a waste to draft either of these guys this year with the "hope" they'll do something.

True, different scenarios. Bonds was being blackballed pretty much, and I think there's a chance both Alexander and Benson are on a roster, but not worth a draft pick on my team.

What's foolish is anyone who drafted Bonds this year....and what's foolish is anyone that will draft Alexander or Benson this year. Good luck with that big D.

We still haven't seen that big injury yet. Any day now. My guess is that Alexander will be signed before Benson, simply because of character issues, but that is just a guess. They will probably both be in a uniform by the end of the season, but as of now there is no way to tell who they might play for.

Let me make it clear. I didnt draft them this year. We have a 24 man roster than we start cutting down week 4.

we can have 24 till then. Then we drop down to 20 then keep dropping 1 player a week till week 10 when we are down to 14 players.

So after the draft I added them both to my roster via F/A market. I figure by week 4-6 I will know if there is any life in Alexander or Benson.

Couldnt hurt really

Sure, in that scenario, you've essentially got 4 spots to waste on total flyers. No issue with that at all.

Drafting and keeping Alexander and Benson on a roster and having them waste space from the get go is not something I can envision doing. We've all seen enough of Alexander to know that he's really done, and I've personally seen enough of Benson to know that unless a team likes their RB's to run up to the line, show no vision, and basically fall at first contact, he's a special teamer.

The theoretical comparison I made with Bonds was this: drafting anyone who is not on a roster is like flipping a coin. I am more of a conservative drafter than most and don't like taking those type of chances....but Jedi's scenario is completely justified.

Perhaps I didn't finish my post on the right note.... there's no chance I'm drafting either Benson or Alexander in any league this year (maybe Benson in a dynasty format, late round). I was just trying to point out that the situation with Bonds was a bit different.

Yes, different...I painted with a broad brush in my initial post.

I still see Houston eventually bringing in Benson at some point.

The latest rumor:

Saints, Texans showing interest in Cedric Benson

By Vaughn McClure | Tribune reporter

8:54 PM CDT, September 6, 2008

Former Bears running back Cedric Benson, released by the team June 9 after two alcohol-related off-season arrests, said Saturday he has a tryout with the Houston Texans this week.

Benson also said by phone he'd had a workout with the New Orleans Saints two weeks ago and that it "went well." Benson believes teams are waiting for his legal matters to be cleared up before signing him.

Benson maintains he was treated unfairly in both arrests in Austin, Texas. One was for boating while intoxicated, the other for driving under the influence.

As for his stint with the Bears, the fourth pick in the 2005 draft said he'd taken steps to make sure he would have a breakout year.

"I got myself in good shape, changed some things about myself," he said. "I wasn't going to let the running game be a question this season."

Benson cleared of all charges in Texas

By

Brad Biggs

on September 25, 2008 5:14 PM

Cedric Benson was cleared on all charges in Texas today stemming from his spring arrests.

Two grand juries in Travis County returned a no bill on each of Benson's cases meaning he will not go to trial for his May arrest on charges of drunken boating and resisting arrest or his June arrest when he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

"Cedric is grateful to all who have supported him,'' his attorney Sam Bassett said in a statement. "It was particularly difficult for him to lose the job that he loved with the Bears. He is eager to have an opportunity to again demonstrate that he is a quality running back who can contribute to a winning team. More importantly, he intends to demonstrate that he is worthy of being a positive role model in his community. He has learned much from this ordeal."

Benson has had tryouts with Detroit and New Orleans, most recently with the Lions, but remains a free agent.
