Chad Johnson exits with injured shoulder

Chad Johnson left Sunday night's preseason game against the Lions with a shoulder injury. The Bengals initially called him "questionable" to return, but Johnson was ultimately ruled out of the game.

Chad left the field hunched over in pain and doctors tended to his left shoulder on the sideline. The extent of Johnson's injury is unknown, but he likely wouldn't have gone back in even if it was mild due to the game's lack of importance. We'll keep you updated. Aug. 17 - 8:10 pm et

Shoulder is pretty much a non-issue for a WR. Could have been worse. At least the legs got out safely...

I'd say Chad's injury would be pretty bad for Housh considering they'll both be standing on the sidelines.

As of Friday: The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (hamstring) is progressing but has to pass progressive tests applied by both the medical staff and the strength and conditioning coaches before returning.

Housh is in rehab. Rudy is not practicing either (strained hammy).

Chad Johnson should have caught the intercepted pass and the one thrown his way on the previous play. He was taken to the locker room and was still being examined shortly before halftime, when he was declared out for the game. The injury is not expected to be serious.

I guess if he separated it or something, he still has the other arm and can catch one handed. Its all good.

WRs play through separated shoulders all the time. As long as he didn't break his clavicle (unlikely from the reports), he will be fine for the season. Basic sports medicine knowledge applied to the look of the hit and where they were examining.

A little more serious then 1st thought. It is possible this injury could haunt him during the season having it go in and out.

Chad Johnson - WR - Bengals

The Bengals are calling the shoulder injury Chad Johnson suffered Sunday night a "sprain," but coach Marvin Lewis indicated in his post-game press conference that the shoulder was briefly dislocated.

"We’ll be able to treat it conservatively, and he’ll have to get his strength back in it," said Lewis. "It came out and went right back in on the field." Lewis says Johnson is unlikely to play in the Bengals' third exhibition, but an MRI came back negative and Chad is expected to be ready for the September 7 opener at Baltimore. He isn't moving in our rankings Aug. 17 - 11:30 p.m. ET

I don't mean to insult, but without an MRI, a shouler injury can be from a week to week injury to major reconstructive surgery. If no ligaments are torn, a fast return is very possible. Players can rehab and play thru partial tears.... and the mildest shoulder seperation will only stretch ligaments, making the shoulder weaker, but still stable. Basic sports knowledge would make one aware that withoit diagnostic testing, like an MRI, is pure geusswork if one chooses to make a diagnoses based on a hit. That, frankly, is silliness. If any of the 4 ligamants that are called "rotator cuff" are completely torn.... no way you play thru that. One cannot reach a car radio to change the volume if one of those ligaments is gonzo....

Royal.... I'm glad you aren't my ortho surgeon! You sound like a HS coach.... shake it off! Get back out there! You whimp! So, it's 105 degrees! You don't need any water, you wimp!

Just the perspective from someone who HAS had a rotator cuff tear.... get one, and then talk to me!
