Anderson likely out vs. Lions; MRI reveals high ankle sprain for Cribbs

Browns quarterback Derek Anderson may not see action again until the season opener against Dallas, following his concussion suffered Monday night against the Giants.Browns quarterback Derek Anderson will most likely sit out Saturday's exhibition game in Detroit with a mild concussion suffered during Monday night's 37-24 loss to the Giants.

If Anderson rests, as expected, Brady Quinn will start the third preseason game -- which is regarded as the dress rehearsal for the regular season.

Meanwhile, receiver Josh Cribbs underwent an MRI Tuesday on his left ankle, which he sprained in the first quarter of the game. By early Tuesday evening, a source told The Plain Dealer that Cribbs was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain and he could sit out the final two preseason games as well.

Syndric Steptoe will replace Cribbs. Steptoe had a magnificent night against the Giants, scoring on a 7-yard lateral, catching a 44-yard TD pass from Quinn and returning kickoffs of 40 and 90 yards. Cribbs limped out of the locker room at Giants Stadium in a walking boot and declined to be interviewed, only saying that he hoped he'd be okay and that he'd know more on Tuesday.

The Browns had no comment Tuesday on the injuries.

If Anderson misses the Detroit game, the Browns will be without two of their Pro Bowl players on offense in the final significant tune-up for the season. Receiver Braylon Edwards is also expected to miss his second straight game with a foot laceration.

The Giants game took a heavy toll on the Browns, who also lost starting safety Brodney Pool and tight end Brad Cieslak to concussions and linebacker Leon Williams to a neck injury. The Browns are in the midst of a stretch of three preseason games in 11 days, and now they're apparently down a lot of manpower.

Because of the short turnaround, they'll practice only twice this week, on Wednesday and Thursday.

3 games in 11 days? Is this common?

For the preseason, it is. If they are on MNF, then their game 2 weekends ahead are played early (Thursday), particularly in the last pre-season weekend, that can cascade over to 3 games in 11 days.
