Boldin asks for trade

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin asked to be traded, saying he doesn't feel his situation can be resolved and declaring he has no relationship with coach Ken Whisenhunt.

"I'm a football player. That's about it," Boldin said Tuesday when asked to characterize his dealings with the coach these days.

A team spokesman said the Cardinals have no plans to trade the sixth-year standout and still hope to sign him to a contract extension.

Whisenhunt sounded puzzled when discussing reports that Boldin had said he was no longer speaking to the coach.

"We've been communicating," he said. "If communicating is talking, that's what we have been doing at practice. As we go forward, I don't know. I don't foresee anything changing. If it does, it's in his court."

Boldin offered a glimpse of his talent late in Tuesday's workout, splitting a pair of defenders on a slant route during a 2-minute drill. He made a nimble catch on a bullet thrown by Kurt Warner for a 25-yard gain.

But with training camp starting to wind down, Boldin made it sound as if it was a tortured three weeks off the field.

The two-time Pro Bowl player, who blasted team officials as camp opened, claims the Cardinals reneged on an offer to re-negotiate his contract.

He has three years left on the four-year, $22.75 million extension he signed after the 2005 season that keeps him under contract through 2010. He's making an average of $4 million a year.

"It's a tough situation, especially when you come into a working environment," Boldin said after practice. "But my job is to stay professional. I'm going to do what I'm supposed to do."

Although Boldin previously denied asking for a trade, he said Tuesday that his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has asked the Cardinals to consider it now.

"At the beginning of camp, I hadn't asked for a trade," Boldin said. "As of recently, we did."

Asked if he believes his standoff with Arizona can be resolved, Boldin shook his head and simply said, "No."

Teammate Larry Fitzgerald signed a four-year $40 million, deal after last season, with $30 million guaranteed, but Boldin has said he believes Fitzgerald earned the deal and that's not why he's unhappy.

Boldin is one of the NFL's top receivers. He reached 400 career receptions faster than any other player, doing it in 67 games. In five seasons, Boldin has 413 receptions for 5,458 yards and 29 touchdowns.

"If I'm not going to be treated fairly, if my hard work and loyalty isn't going to be rewarded here, then let me go somewhere where it's going to be rewarded. That's how I feel," Boldin said.

I'll be honest.. if there is a chance that Az is going to trade Boldin and the Eagles don't end up with him, I will be extremely angry. If Dallas ends up getting him, I will be double angry. This Philly front office needs to step up and give that first round pick we got from Carolina to Az for Boldin. We are one Boldin away from making some noise again. To let Dallas get him as good as they are already would be disastrous to the rest of the NFC East.

It's on the Eagles front office to get this done and go for the SB. Stop being so damn cheap and bring in a much needed WR weapon. Boldin"s contract is pretty attractive for a player of his caliber so I can't see why the Birds wouldn't do this. Dallas has gone all out and you've got to love how aggressive Jerry Jones has been in the off-season.

Get what done? Sorry, but I just don't see the Card's trading Boldin and they have been pretty adamant thus far in stating that they don't intend to. Not sure why so many people think he going to get his wish, pissed or not, IMO Boldin will be playing for AZ this year.

Really? I find it very hard to believe that his agent would do something like that. That's just not like him.

(when will teams stop dealing with this douchébag?)

When that "douchebag" no longer has any clients left and considering the list he has accumulated, it's probably going to be awhile.

I don't see them moving him either, but if they decide to, Jerry will step up and bring him to Dallas.

True, this is the likely scenario. But let me put this another way. If the Eagles are serious about contending and making the playoffs, then you make a strong offer like a 1st rounder they can spare and maybe another pick or player. You know what you're getting in Bolden- a solid WR the Eagles desperately need. Make the Cardinals aaaaat least seriously consider your offer and ship Bolden if their relationaship is that sour. The Eagles have a closing window of opportunity and need to go for the gusto now.

 The Eagles have been in the top-3rd of the league in salary cap usage, and in the top-5 twice, over the last 8 seasons...not sure you can call them cheap. Didn't they empty the bank and give Samuel the largest contract they have ever given a defensive player just two months ago?

And seriously, what makes you think Boldin will come here and play for his existing contract, when he won't do it in Arizona? The Eagles would have to negotiate an extension prior to the trade, before they would part with a #1 pick and/or Sheppard without knowing they'd have Boldin long-term.

Lastly, why on earth would Arizona trade Boldin? Because he is unhappy? If thats the case, half the league must be getting traded.

The biggest quarrel I have with the Eagles is they appear happy to be good and competitive but rarely go out on a limb to be great. Sure the TO situation ended babdly but they went to the SB and had a chance to win it all. If you're team is close to realistically compete for the SB go for it. How many years can that organization sit back and watch those sorry azz WR's? Is McNabb supposed to run around and scramble in his older age and wait for someone to get open forever? How about giving him some toys to play with once and for all.

As far as the Eagles being cheap....well they are. I realize owners need to run a profitable business. But if you buy a sports franchise, winning a championship better be a high priority. Top 3rd in salary cap usage isn't a big deal for a major market team and top 5 in the last 8 seasons doesn't say much either. I'm not saying they have to hit the salary cap every year and give out foolish contracts. I'd just like them to go for the gusto a bit more and fill the WR void that's been haunting this organization for years.

Boldin fits the void whether this trade is realistic or not.
