H8tank
They wanted to replace Gene so quickly. The players knew he was sick. That is a fairly ignorant comment.

Randall
Ed Garvey on Upshaw By Don Walker Thursday, Aug 21 2008, 02:18 PM Ed Garvey of Madison was the head of the National Football League Players Association from 1971 to 1983. As with so many others in sports, he was shocked and saddened to learn about the death of NFLPA head Gene Upshaw. Garvey said Upshaw was playing golf in a tournament in Lake Tahoe, where Upshaw and his family had a cabin, and had to drop out because his back was hurting. Garvey said Upshaw's family insisted he see a doctor. On Sunday, doctors told Upshaw that he might have pancreatic cancer. On Wednesday night, Upshaw died. "He didn't know, his staff didn't know," Garvey said. Garvey said Upshaw was respected because he was a former player. "It always helped when we had outstanding players as officers. Alan Page and Gene were examples. Gene was a very powerful proponent of our agenda and really helped to keep the union unified as we won the all-important percentage of the gross." When Paul Tagliabue was NFL commissioner, many criticized Upshaw for being too close to Tagliabue. Garvey said that was unfair. "People thought I was too militant," Garvey said. "Some thought Gene was too accommodating. It's how you get from Point A to Point B. From my perspective when I was running the union, we had to win the lawsuits and strike successfully. Gene's view was that once we achieved those goals. the owners would never be tempted to break the union again. But they did." Upshaw also came under fire for not doing more for retired players. "The issue of retirees comes up because the U.S. Supreme Court said it was not a mandatory subject of bargaining with management over former employees," Garvey said. "We would go to the bargaining table for more money for those players. They said they wouldn't talk about. I suggested to Gene that he challenge management to put up money that the players would match. It would shift the argument back to where it belonged, the owners who were watching their franchise values go up exponentially."
Randall
Who is in line to replace him? Is Steve Largent available???? Perhaps an assistant. Troy Vincent was an outspoken players rep. Is he still working there?

Let It Ride
Up in lake tahoe two weeks ago and saw him at Carnelian Bay(North SHore) at Garwoods......he looked pretty skinny, yet happy. Also was taught by his wife in seventh grade...really nice family. Pretty eerie that he died in tahoe.....pancreatic cancer is the worst kind of cancer there is.....your chances of survival are next to none. Rest in Peace......
