Large Ticket Revenue Makes NFL Preseason Changes Unlikely

NFL Owners Unlikely To Change

Format Of Preseason Any Time Soon

NFL preseason game ticket sales “account for 20[%] of a team’s ticket revenues,” or about $400M across the league, making it “clear that tinkering with the preseason schedule could have a huge impact on the league,” according to John Branch of the N.Y. TIMES. The preseason is a "market-driven enterprise that people in all involved parties -- fans, coaches, players and owners -- agree is not ideal. But there are no obvious solutions, and no momentum for change.” Ticket revenues account for about 30% of the more than $6B in NFL total annual revenues, and Giants co-Owner John Mara, who is on the NFL’s competition committee, said that there has been “no serious discussion" by the committee or owners to change alter the preseason. Mara: “That’s a significant chunk of your revenue to take away. That would be such a drastic change that I just can’t see the owners [deducting games]” (N.Y. TIMES, 8/31).

FIXING THE SYSTEM: In San Diego, Nick Canepa notes season-ticket holders pay the same price for a preseason game as a regular-season game, and since players only receive a stipend for playing them, “guess where all the money goes? We’re talking many millions of dollars here. And, as the men who run the [NFL] so often remind us, it’s a business. In this particular case, it’s a shameful business, but there’s absolutely nothing we -- and probably not [Commissioner Roger] Goodell -- can do about it.” Chargers GM A.J. Smith: “I understand the owners make a lot of money off them, but we need them for our evaluation” (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/31). In Charlotte, Scott Fowler writes, "If the league insists on four of these exercises in insignificance every year, it should at least make one of them a free scrimmage. The uniforms were real Thursday night, and the money the fans paid was real, too. But Pittsburgh was being quarterbacked by Brian St. Pierre in the second quarter and Carolina in the second half by Dalton Bell" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/31). SI.com’s Peter King offered three ways to adjust the preseason and wrote, "I have a feeling The Next Big Thing on Roger Goodell's radar after the Michael Vick case and after the commish gets a handle on concussions and how the league can improve the lives of retired players, will be fixing the preseason. Goodell is not blind. He sees what a joke preseason games are” (SI.com, 8/27).
