Deion Branch - coming back soon

I was hoping that Branch would end up being a top 30 -35 receiver once he is back on the field. I had thoughts that he would be the #1 target once he is healthy and that it would impact the Seahawks in a really positive way....

Maybe you are right and he is only average at best but I my thoughts were that he would still produce 800 yards and 6 TDS or so....

He's better than that if he stays healthy. Can he?

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch suffered a torn ACL in Saturday's playoff loss to the Packers and might not be ready to go in time for the start of the 2008 regular season.

The Seahawks say they think it will take Branch nine months to rehabilitate, which means he would miss not just all of the off-season and preseason, but the first month of the regular season as well. Players rehabbing from ACL surgery are rarely back to full speed immediately when they do return to the field.

Even if he makes it back in just the 9 months the Seahawks think & only misses the first month of the season, physically he probably won't be up to speed for another 3 months.

ACL repairs are a generally 12 month deal. Then there's the mental hurdle for the individual to overcome in fully trusting the repaired knee to handle the tremendous torque of sharp cuts WR's must make.

You realize that his best year was 995 yards receiving with 5 TDs, in 2005, when he played 16 games? His next best year in 2003, with 800 and 3 in 15 games

800 and 6 is a damn good year for this guy.

Just for the sake of clarity, the above numbers are from his time in N.E.

Different offensive situation than where he is now. I would be hesitant to use his N.E. WR numbers, to project what his WR numbers will be in Seattle.

If you think Branch has the talent & will make a relatively quick 100% recovery from his torn ACL, I would look at the numbers Seattles #1 WR had been putting up, to get a better feel for his potential numbers.

Maybe. But you're assuming that he is going to be the #1 WR in Seattle.

I don't think his original "slotting" matters so much. IF he makes it back and is healthy, he's going to play, even with Burleson and Engram. He had a great start to last year and impressed, no question.

On top of that, I think we saw that Engram's numbers last year showed it doesn't matter where on the field you line up for Seattle.

Have there been other receivers with an injury like this that have come back so soon? I keep thinking back to Jerry Rice making it back from an ACL too soon and promptly reinjuring himself.

I know Javon Walker blew one out and then had a good year, but I can't remember how much they pushed that timeline.

Deion freaking Branch was absolute garbage when he was healthy, why expect any different with a torn acl? 800 and 6 are completely over this guy's talent level. #1 WR? Get serious. This isn't a guy capable of huge numbers in any system. He couldn't put up 1000 yards, when healthy, with Tom freakin' Brady. He had no ability to get open before, so now with a bum knee he is gonna be better at creating space? I think whatever Holmgren though of him before has drastically changed based on the fact that he hasn't done anything since he got here, or even been on the field very much at all for that matter. If you got Deion Brach in your first 12 rounds, you threw away a pick. Bobby Engram is the undisputed #1 in Seattle, and if Burleson can put anything together, he wil become the #2.

When Holmgren traded for Branch it was the plan for him to be Seattle's #1 WR. I have not heard anything different. Have you?

You know what they say about plans.

In any event, of course Holmgren is going to say that. They spent $39 million dollars on the guy.

This year, Burleson is probably going to get the most looks for the first few weeks. Not the greatest WR, but Hasselbeck will get used to looking for him. I'm pretty sure that Engram is due back at about the same time as Branch. I beg to differ with anyone who thinks that Branch is going to step into this situation and become a clear #1 in Seattle, for whatever that is worth.

Come on, Seahawks21... Don't hold back! Tell us what you really think about Deion Branch.

And my  on this - When is the last time anyone came back from an ACL injury to have a long, productive season? I would temper expectations for Branch. It would actually be smarter for Holmgren to at least wait on Branch until after their week 4 bye, but we'll see if that happens. Still, I don't see how Branch can have the necessary burst or cutting skills to separate from most #1 corners coming off of this injury. And he also wasn't THAT good when he was healthy (mid to high-end WR3 or so - decent, but nothing special).

Despite the uncertainties with the Seahawk's WRs this year I think this fact is undisputable; When Engram and Branch return, one of them, not Burleson, will finish with the most fantasy points at the end of the year. If Branch starts week 1 I don't see why he wouldn't be the best fantasy WR on the team.

I'll give you two reasons why Branch might not be the best fantasy WR on the team if he starts week 1:

1) He might not be able to separate from the opposing team's #1 corner being fresh off an ACL injury.

2) He might not make it through the whole season if they rush him back to play in week 1.

I do agree that Burleson is unlikely to have the most fantasy points on the team by the end of the year.

I think Courtney Taylor will be a nice start in PPR for the next few weeks of the year. Seattle's starting flanker (which will be Taylor Week 1) will be valuable.

FWIW I see Branch taking limited snaps as the three receiver for the first month of the season at a minimum. Potential to be more harmful than helpful if they rush him back again (rushing him back from his calf/foot injuries last year in the postseason didn't work out too well).

A lot of folks are making it sound like people are expecting him to be a WR1 on their FF team. I know I have Branch (from last year), and if he DOES play, he will be no more than a WR3 at best. Anyone expecting anything more from him (at least the 1st half of the season) is silly.

If you draft him late, or get him from the WW, then he should do just fine for you at some point in the season.

I hope you are right. I picked up Courtney Taylor as a late round flier in three leagues. Hoping I can sell high early this season...

Does everyone agree that Engram swill be the best WR fantasy option in Seattle when he returns?

It'll come down to how the young guys perform (Taylor/Kent) in his absence & Branch's recovery as far as what type role he has. I think in the ideal scenario, they put Engram at WR3 and split time between Branch/Taylor at flanker.

Burleson and Branch are signed long-term. (Nothing in the NFL is long-term per se, but they've got the contracts). Engram wants a new deal, but at 35-36 & consider Burleson/Branch + Kent/Taylor there as replacements, the Hawks aren't going to pay him based off what he did last year after an otherwise very ordinary career.
