Classy ?

Actually, I DO recall a story about OSU beating the crap out of UM back in the Hayes/Schembechler days, and Woody was going for 2 late in the game. When asked why he was doing it, his response was along the lines of "they wouldn't let us go for 3."

I would consider that too as a classless act.

Eh, to a certain extent, when it's programs on relatively equal footing I lean towards the Ol' Ballcoach's feelings - "if you don't want us running up the score play better defense."

When it's Powerhouse State throwing deep up 60-7 against some 1-AA or Big Ten team, then yeah, it's pretty low-rent.

While I wasn't jumping for joy that the Gators kicked that last FG, I think that it's the product of Div. I football and they way the polls and the BCS is set up. A VERY young Miami team kept it close and played hard on the road against a top 5 and NC contender. Half-time it was only 9-3 and the 'Canes D was making it hard on Teabow and co. If your a pollster and your not watching the game, seeing that half-time score must of been a surprise to say the least. The way the current system is set up, your margin of victory really does come into play unfortunately. IMO 23-3 and 26-3 looks pretty much the same but if Myer felt he needed those 3 points, well that's something he'll have to live with.

Shannon looked pissed as the clock was running out and barely acknowledged Myer after the game, but the players all shook hands, hugged, smiled and chatted with one another since most of them have been competing with each other since Pop Warner. They didn't make that last FG into anything major and we shouldn't either.

I saw a lot of good things with my beloved 'Canes. I think we've got a gamer in freshman QB Robert Marve. Has a big arm, played tough and didn't seemed too rattled playing in his first college game on the road in Gainesville. A bunch on young fast guys on defense as well. I think we're a year or 2 away from competing with the big boys again. Shannon has done an outstanding job recruiting and we will see the fruits of his labor soon enough.

on a sidebar --what an excellent defensive scheme the Miami coordinator cooked up

Well, usually I would agree, but after UGA dropped last week because they didn't beat GSU by a bigger margin, I'd err on the side of caution and put up as many points as possible. The pollsters didn't consider that 14 of GSU's points came against the second team.

40 seconds in the game , up 23-3 and Florida coach Urban Meyer is throwing for the endzone and then kicks a FG instead of taking the knee and running out the clock .

Sorry, Florida fans, but that is about as classless a move I've ever seen in the sport.

Of course, that last field goal earned me 2 pts and cost you 4 pts in College Pick 'Em. If I'm looking for the silver lining...

First off it wasn't class, but then again, what do you expect from Urban Meyer? I do have to say, I think the pollsters don't care how bad you beat someone. USC still would have surpassed Georgia last week regardless of how bad Georgia beat Georgia Southern. Most people should be smart enough to see that Florida played pretty well last night and had a workmanlike effort. 23-3, or 26-3, either way, defensively it was a great performance, and I would hope that Fla and Oklahoma would move up past Ohio State after their lackluster effort vs Ohio.

Clearly he bet on his own team and was giving the points (21).

Well, the thought that he might have been at least trying to keep any of his fan base that bet on them happy did occur to me.

My thoughts besides that? At the moment I was a bit put off by it but then started realizing that the game was much closer than that for a long time and Meyer wanted to make it seem as convincing a win as possilbe. Perhaps 3 months from now when all these games sort of blur into a mass of numbers separated by dashes, 26-3 will somehow matter more than 23-3. I mean, that assumes that Miami goes on to have a nice year (which they really might do considering how well that D played for most of the game and the fact that they're in the woeful ACC).

Like others, I would hardly congratulate FL on being so classy, but I'm not hugely outraged either.

Good post. I'm not outraged, it's just par for the course for a guy like Urban Meyer. You're gonna go bald if you get outraged by things that the Nick Sabans and Urban Meyers of the world do.

Florida has been outscored 197-98 in the six-game losing streak, getting beat twice in Gainesville, twice in Miami and twice in bowl games. The only time the Gators were really close was in 2003 in the Orange Bowl. They led 33-10 with 6:10 left in the third quarter, putting then-coach Ron Zook in line for his biggest victory as Steve Spurrier's successor.

But then Florida fell apart. Brock Berlin threw for 340 yards, overcoming leg-buckling cramps and rallying Miami to a stunning 38-33 victory.

The game went down as one of the most memorable in the series, right up there with right-hander George Mira's left-handed pass to beat Florida in 1961 and fullback James Jones' falling-backward, one-handed TD catch in the closing minutes to seal a victory for the Gators in 1982.

The "Florida Flop," the "Peach Pelting" and the "Bourbon Street Brawl" are remembered for much different reasons.

With Florida leading 45-8 late in the fourth quarter of the season's final game in '71, defenders laid down and let the Hurricanes score so quarterback John Reaves could have the ball back and get the 15 yards he needed to break Jim Plunkett's record for NCAA career passing yards.

Miami coach Fran Curci refused to shake hands with Florida coach Doug Dickey after the game. Making matters worse, several Gators headed to the Orange Bowl's east end zone and jumped into a pool that housed Miami Dolphins mascot Flipper during NFL games.

It fired up the Hurricanes for years.

The rivalry grew even more bitter in 1980, when Florida fans -- angry that the Gators trailed Miami 28-7 late in Gainesville -- threw oranges, tangerines, peaches and ice cubes at the Hurricanes, who were headed to the Peach Bowl. Miami coach Howard Schnellenberger was so furious he ordered a field goal to add to the final margin.

"I've learned very quickly in this state that football is everything," said Gators defensive lineman Duke Lemmens, a sophomore from California. "Any time two major Florida teams play it's a big deal and anything can happen."

For the Gators, the game never hit the heights of other Southeastern Conference rivalries like Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee -- or reached the crescendo of the annual meeting with Florida State.

So Florida dropped the Hurricanes in 1988 because it wanted to play a "more national schedule," then promptly replaced them with Montana State. Miami fans accused the Gators of pulling out because the Hurricanes were dominating them -- on field and on the national scene.

With Florida's recruiting efforts suffering in talent-rich Dade County, Spurrier wanted the Hurricanes back on the schedule in 1990. But with the SEC expanding, there was no room.

After a 13-year hiatus, Florida and Miami renewed the rivalry in the 2001 Sugar Bowl. Just a few nights before Miami's 37-20 win, a handful of players from both teams mixed it up on Bourbon Street.

The Hurricanes would like to do even more damage Saturday.

"This is more than a game for us and same for those guys," Miami running back Javarris James said. "It's personal. It's bragging rights for our fans, for the whole state. People say we're down, but this is the game that can put us back up. It's a great opportunity to play a great team and we can show the nation what we've got."

If you're looking for class, you're not gonna find any in this rivalry.

Q: Why did Howard Schnellenberger like it when Gator fans through oranges, tangerines, peaches and ice cubes at him?

A: Because it felt good when it stopped.
