Patriots to sign Culpepper?

Currently listening to 620AM KTAR in Phoenix (Gambo and Ash). Rumor has it that when Chris Simms and Tim Rattay reported to the Patriots facility, they were both immediately sent back to their planes - Patriots are NO LONGER INTERESTED - before either of them ever worked out..

It's rumored that the Patriots are currently talking with Culpepper in hopes of pulling him out of retirement. Cassel would still be the starter for now obviously, but this may be the shot that C-Pep was looking for.. C-Pep to Moss part 2 ??

*!*!* JUST A RUMOR *!*!* heard on a Phoenix local sports radio station.

I never thought Belichick would be able to reign in Randy Moss, or that Parcells could control TO, and in both cases I was dead wrong. Belichick is the kind of guy that can get the best out of players, so reuniting Moss and CPep could be very interesting. I know it's a long shot, but it would be something.

I know that Culpepper and his agent were claiming that he didn't get signed anywhere because he was being blackballed, but anyone who watched him play in Miami knows he's toast. I'd be disappointed to see Culpepper come in. He's just not the guy he was before his body broke down. He's not even the 'type' that would do well in the Pats' offense.

Phil Simms said (somewhere) today that his son did not travel to NE today.

pretty sure Culpepper doesn't have an agent, which is rumored to be one of the reasons he was having trouble landing anywhere.

I am cracking up about you Pats fans talking about Culpepper not having the right "skill set" to run the team. As if Rattay or Simms would.

Interesting thought too..

Derek Anderson is not too bad - and what are the Brownies true chances this year? I mean Anderson is experienced, and he can throw. He would have to learn a new offense but seriously.. The Browns will never get any more for Derek Anderson than right now, and you've got a young Brady Quinn (and B Edwards & K Winslow) to start to build your team around. Why not at least consider the option??

I don't think either of them would, either. If either one is ultimately brought in, it would be in a backup role.

Another site I was reading said that Culpepper's agent was claiming that other agents were spreading stories about him to sour his chances. Skillset or no, he stunk in Miami.

I'll be surprised if they sign Culpepper. Belichick doesn't like players that turn over the ball and C-pep is a fumble/INT machine. I think there's a better chance of BB signing Testaverde than Culpepper.

My feeling is that the Pats will sign or trade for somebody like Testaverde or Griese to back up Cassel. This morning, Trent Dilfer was saying that the Pats offense takes YEARS to learn, which might be an exaggeration but his point about it taking a long time to grasp is valid. Cassel has been in that system for years and, IMO, he's in the best position to lead the offense at this point.

Zero chance of happening. The Browns are trying to win the division this year and signed DA to a 3 year 20somthing million dollar deal. This really isn't even worth commenting on anymore.

Culpepper doesn't have an agent. He thinks that he's getting blackballed because he doesn't have an agent among other things. He thinks that showing up at various teams and telling them that he wants to start for them is a good way to get signed even though nobody has seen any positives from him for over two years now. Obviously he has been wrong so far.

Can he still play? Maybe he can.

This is a moot point guys. No quarterback they sign is going to come in and learn this system this season. If they sign someone, it's as a veteran back-up only. Someone to help with film study or someone to talk to on the sideline about things they see, etc. Someone that could possibly run a dumbed down version of the system in a pinch, ie. if Cassell goes out for a few series or a half. If Cassell goes down for any length of time, I think they bring back Gutierrez or roll with O'Donnell.

 Matt Cassell is the starting QB for the rest of the season. Period.
