Showboating - love it, or hate it?

  1. 1. What are your thoughts on showboating (e.g. TD celebrations, taunting, etc.?)

    • All kinds and type of showboating is great. It's what the fans want.

    • Showboating is unprofessional and immature.

    • It all depends on a case-to-case basis. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I think it's tasteless.

What are everyone's thoughts on showboating? Personally, I think it depends on how it's done.

When I was channel-surfing the games yesterday I caught the Brees-to-Henderson (at least I think it was Henderson) TD. The one where the Defense came offside, so Brees slung it deep knowing he had a free play, and Ronde (again, at least I think it was him) who was covering Henderson (if it really was him), slipped and fell. The receiver (since I'm not sure if it was Henderson) basically had an open 30-40 yards, at least, to the goal-line, and raised the pigskin in one arm over his head at what seemed to be the 20-yard line, high-stepping the rest of the way in. Now I understand how happy the guy must be, since any receiver not named Colston or Bush or Shockey in that offense usually gets 1-2 passes from Brees, but what he did just seemed unnecessary and disrespectful to me. Not to mention unprofessional. As I was watching I was half-hoping that he would trip himself up, faceplant, drop the ball, and fumble it into the hands of a Buc or something. Reminded me of the self-absorbed chest-thumping (before even winning his race) by Usain Bolt during the Olympics, if any of you followed that.

On the other hand, I found TO's TD celebration (he acted like a sprinter and used the goal-line as his start-line) much more subtle, and to some extent, amusing and mildly entertaining. Sure, he got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct because the rules say you can't hit the ground when you celebrate, but that's the problem with rules, there isn't much (if any) room for interpretation.

Am I being a stick in the mud here or what?

I love trash-talking, showboating, and one-upsmanship, as long as it is backed up by performance. I think Usain Bolt pulling up and showboating and still smashing the world record was the most completely awesome thing I've ever seen.

One of the most awesome things I've ever seen as well (showboating & smashing the world record at the same time). I don't think I'll ever see something like that again.

Not saying it was the worst I've seen, just that I didn't like it.

At the 1:00 minute mark here.

Don't liker that but do like honest celebrating. I also like what Chad and Smitty used to do that was banned. It was creative and not intended to make other players look bad. It was funny. I like creative theater.

It's sports. It's grown friggin' men playing a game for a living. It's serious business but why does that have to preclude the occurence of any spontaneous fun and/or laughter.

Bingo. Time and place are key. If you score the winning TD as time runs out celebrate all you want. If you get a sack when your team is down by 34 with 2:56 on the clock just get your ass back to the huddle already.

do whatever u want when you score a TD imo....that's your 15 seconds to celebrate if you want....or if u don't want to...

why try to make players who play an emotional game into robots?...

I don't like the lame celebrations so much...but I'm not against them....so all forms of celebrations should be accepted imo...

I find excessive celebration distasteful, but I’m glad guys do it for two reasons:

One, it amplifies the classiness of those that don’t.

Two, it creates opportunities for comeuppance, ala Leon Lett being striped of a Super Bowl TD.

Thanks Desean Jackson for illustrating point two.
