STL Fan
Apologies if this is a duplicate thread, but I searched and didn't see one. Will they use the bye to get him healthy or install the backup?
Mr. Game 7
I'm very curious about this too, as you can tell in my sig. Can't really complain about what he's done for me so far tho.
Furd
This is the thing - the Lions do not appear ready to throw in the towel on the seaon yet. This could change before week 5, but as of now, it appears that if Kitna is good to go week 5, he is the guy. Barring a near miracle, Orlovsky is gone at the end of the year. The Lions are not interested inputting him in the game to "see what he can do." If Orlovsky is starting, its an outright surrender as the Lions can't legitmately claim that they are looking at the future. Stanton is different. The Lions can pull Kitna and start Stanton under the premise that they are going to evaluate Stanton to see if he is the QB of the future. The problem with this right now is that Stanton hasn't taking a single snap in a regular season game. I suspect that the Lions would like to get him some mop up duty first, but Stanton might not have that luxury.

Randall
Lions' Stanton says he's ready; Kitna says he's not the problem Posted by Tom Kowalski September 23, 2008 11:19AM While the rest of the Detroit Lions players took off for destinations unknown for the bye week on Tuesday, quarterback Drew Stanton stuck around for a little bit more work with quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler. Are the Lions getting Stanton prepared for a possible start against the Chicago Bears in two weeks or was this just a routine workout because Stanton still isn't 100 percent healthy from his recently sprained right thumb injury? No one knows for sure right now. Quarterback Jon Kitna is aware that a change is possible, but he doesn't believe it should happen. "I'm all about this team winning. If they feel that's necessary, then so be it. But I don't think I'm the problem.'' Kitna said Tuesday. Kitna also said that he's been given no indication that a change is quarterbacks is about to take place. Stanton also said that he hasn't been told anything. "They haven't said a single word to me. As far as I'm concerned, I'm still the third quarterback,'' Stanton said. When asked if he's healthy enough to play against the Bears, Stanton said: "Yeah, I think so, definitely. It's not 100 percent but I think within the next week or so, I'll be there. I have pretty much all my strength back in there. It's just getting that grip strength back and being able to put pressure on the ball at a different spot and sometimes that doesn't necessarily happen just because it is a little bit weaker because of inactivity and having it immobilized for so long.'' Stanton has been throwing at practice for a couple of weeks, but he was held out of 11-on-11 drills because the coaches didn't want to take the chance he's hit his thumb again and aggravate the injury before it had a chance to fully heal. "After this bye, I'll be fully involved. To what degree, that remains to be seen,'' Stanton said. "Being the third string quarterback, you only get a couple of reps right at the end of scout team.'' As far as having a mental grip on the offense, Stanton believes he could handle the workload. "I think, for me, I feel comfortable within it,'' he said. "It changes from week to week depending on the game plan. I feel I understand the majority of it and what we're trying to do, but I've never had a chance to run it through a whole course of a game so it remains to be seen.'' So, if called upon, he'd be ready to start against the Bears? "Yeah, I'll be able to play,'' he said. "But you can play 'what if's' all day.'' http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2008/...es_ready_k.html
Furd
Is this based on direct statements from the team, or is it fan inference? The Lions don't make direct statements. Its pretty much a consensus of the journalists who follow the team allong with some outside interpretation. Orlovsky was a fifth round pick in 2005, and was the backup that year. He got into 2 games when Garcia got injured and did nothing. In 2006, the Lions brought in Kitna and Josh McCown. Orlovsky was bumped to third-string. No snaps in the regular season. In 2007, the Lions drafted Stanton in the 2nd round. They placed him on IR and brought in J.T. O'Sullivan to back up Kitna. Orlovsky, again the third-stringer, took no regular season snaps in 2007. Currently, Orlovsky is primary backup. He is in the last year of his contract. He has attempted five passes this year, completing 2, for 6 yards. His lone throw in the 49ers game was intercepted by a defensesive lineman. Stanton appears to have recovered from his injury. He is a local guy, and it is thought that he'll bring some excitement to the game with his scrambling ability. He is an unknown, where Orlovsky has demonstrated nothing in 3 years. The Lions have shown no interest in getting Orlovsky any meaningful playing time. All signs point to Stanton if they pull Kitna, IMO. But we are talking about the Lions here. CrazyOne
I have Anderson and Kitna. I'm ready to drop both of them. I picked up Edwards last week and can probably get Griese or Campbell. this week and just go forward. At this stage, either one of those is sounding better. Maybe I'll keep Kitna, depending upon what I can or can't get, but we have tight 14-man rosters and bye weeks. Not the best time to try to keep 3 QBs.... SeductiveNun
I thought I was getting good value when I drafted Kitna - Schaub and decided to play matchup QB. Three weeks in and I'm scouring local news sites to see if one/both of them are being benched... I have those same QBs in 3 leagues, in which I'm 2-1, 1-2, and 1-2, although the QB play isn't really the blame for the 1-2 records. I'm cutting Kitna in 2 of 3 right now, and will probably hold on to him in a 3rd only because I'm not ready to take a flyer on the "Legend Killer" Kyle Orton. This is what happens when you don't draft a QB until the 9th round or later.
FordFairlane
I'm hoping for the best from Schaub this weekend. but my finger will be poised on the mouse button. The first QB between Schaub & Anderson to throw INT #2 on Sunday, and I'm tossing someone overboard and grabbing Rosefels / Quinn.
AtomicCEO
Orlovsky was a fifth round pick in 2005, and was the backup that year. He got into 2 games when Garcia got injured and did nothing. As opposed to Garcia's success on that superbowl-bound team. I don't think Orlovsky is so terrible. He's definitely more experienced. In preseason this year Orlovsky was seriously outplaying Stanton. Better completion percentage, much better yards per catch... I think Detroit would be making a mistake if they threw in a QB with a grand total of 11 passes on 19 attempts for 77 passing yards in the NFL preseason and said "Carry the team." Oh, what the hell. Go for it. It's the Lions.
