In his line of work he should either have never taken the job or just bite the bullet, Xanex it up and get on a plane. Also, with the state of technology today, couldn't he call the game remotely and no one would ever know the difference?

Muggsy
I'm probably in the minority but I'll miss him. +1 Madden can be incredibly annoying at times on air, but he's like the crazy old uncle, who, when he's not at a family event, you realize how much you miss him

cdrudge
saw a stat on ESPN that he has done like 456 consecutive gamesMissing this weekend's game will break a record of 476 games, approximately 28 years of regular season games. I understand wanting to be home and be with the grand kids, but I agree with SheikYerbuti that he's being kind of a wimp about it. Suck it up and fly. Or bring the kids with you. Or just realize that it's only 16 weeks of the year and your being paid a ton of money to do it and just do it. Millions of other grandparents go more then a week or two without seeing the kiddies so can he.

I believe Madden no longer flies and wont any time soon I think he goes everywhere with his custom made bus ... I do believe he should make the trip ...he is not the one driving and he can sit in the back and play his own video game 09 version
skylive5
He is 72 years old. He hasn't taken an airplane since before most of you were born. In addition, I doubt most of you haven't made one trip from coast to coast let alone three in three weeks. Most of you don't want him on the air.....and then slam him for not being there. You people take your hate way past making sense. Make up your mind. Personally will miss him not being there. Have listened to him his whole career and will listen when he comes back to start another streak. My granddaughter is very unhappy she won't hear him this coming week. Only announcer she likes. Swiss Cheezhead
Unless you don't care about real football insight, there's no question Collinsworth is a big improvement over Madden. I'll be tuning in for sure.

I know some of act like we're 2, but I bet most of us were born then. Prior to that, it was '79 but even then, I bet a good number of us were born. Most of you don't want him on the air.....and then slam him for not being there. You people take your hate way past making sense. Make up your mind.I don't mind listening to him. So does that mean I can continue to slam him? Seriously though, even if I didn't like him, I still think he was being a wuss. I'm not faulting him for not liking to travel cross country every week. More power to him if he can get a vacation day. But it's his job. It would be silly for me to complain that I have to sit in front of a computer 8 hours a day when I was hired to be a web developer. It's equally silly to me that a couple of cross country trips are that big of a deal. But that's my

Yeah because only being able to do 456 consecutive games before having to miss one is clearly an indication that the bus just isn't working. Collingsworth sucks. i like listening to collinsworth, but will miss madden. not so much for his insight, but for tradition. i didn't think pat summerall was all that knowledgeable of a football guy, but his voice is a part of the experience that i miss. same with madden. eta: not to dis madden's football knowledge of course. dude knows his stuff. boom! SheikYerbuti
eta: not to dis madden's football knowledge of course. dude knows his stuff. boom! I've heard from several sources that Madden is told to "dumb it down" for the TV audience, hence the "BOOM" rather than breaking down the X's and O's. This pisses me off to no end. Seahawks21
John Madden, even at 72, is the best color guy on the planet. The color guys that try to get technical all the time A. Bore me to death B. Get annoying rather quickly because most of them try to sound a lot more intelligent than they are. You guys that get on his case because he doesn't get technical need to chill out a bit. The guy is hilarious and he knows football. I don't know what more you could want. He calls it as he sees it, and has a great sense for the ebb and flow of a game and how it relates to momentum. He sees the game within the game. Collinsworth is quite good. He knows his stuff and is thoughtful and speaks very well. John Madden he is not. Of course....guess what......Madden is going to miss a Seahawks game. Our basketall team is not our basketball team, our baseball team is the worst in the league, our major college teams have combined for the same amount of wins as our NFL team (1), and now we can't even look forward to John Madden? What did we do!?!
