Why do radio sports shows suck so bad

Are there some good ones I might be missing because ESPN and Fox blow - eg the Dan Patrick Show; he used to be a good sports reporter; don't know what happened but he sucks now - for ex he just droned on and on AND on about how someone threw a pitch at a Philly batter's head in the game the other day.....first we get it already, second can you actually SAY something about it or move on? I had a 1/2 hr drive to work and that was all he and whoever else jabbered about.

Mike n Mike are even worse w/their whole circus clown schtick. I know some are into that, whatever.....but aren't there any sports shows where they just talk about/analyze the actual sport w/o all that BS?

Jim Rome is tolerable for about half an hour for me, but he takes overly-dramatic pauses that drives me crazy.

"Wow......................................Lendale White.............. Wow.......... What a great interview................. You just don't get honesty like that................ Wow"

I always begin to wonder whether he got up and walked away or not...

Fixed. I can't stand Rome. He repeats himself more than my body after a Chipotle bomb.

Rome is garbage. He brings about as much knowledge and insight as any guy at any local sports bar.

Max Kellerman's show used to be pretty good. . .lots of stats (he's a big Bill James/sabermetrics disciple), good guests. But lately it's been a little homer-rific.

But the worst of the worst is Colin Cowherd. Unlistenable.

Agreed, they are all pretty awful... they seem to think THEY are the story and promote themselves as "media personalitiies" instead of talking about sports. Sports talk jocks remind me of NFL WR's. BIG ego's little substance. Fatcessa in NY bugs me the most. Guy's ego is bigger than the load that hangs over his belt and the swelling on his rebiult knees because he is such an overweihgt load of chit. .

Mike and Mike.... yeah, they go off, but for whatever reason, I still enjoy thier schtick. They go on and on about stupid stuff, but the egos are in check. Same things can be said about most of the TV guys who scream over each other constantly to gain attention. They seem to think who ever shouts the loudest wins. If there are 3 announcers, at LEAST two will be talking at the same time. That is a quiet moment with these tards....

Chris Myers does a pretty good job, I believe, but their morning show (Fox)is the worst show I've ever heard. James Washington is Roseanne Barr annoying. I opt for the local sportsradio typically, but lately i've been listening to sportsradio from other cities, mostly the cities that the Seahawks and Huskies are playing that week, and also to listen to David Locke, who is stuck up in Utah right now covering absolutely nothing.

But yeah, the big shows have become too vanilla. If you listen on the web, try Mitch in the Morning on local seattle radio at kjram.com between 7:30am-9ish PST. He does "the daily shnoz" which covers ithe 3 biggest national stories of the morning, then always has good guests on in the 8-9 hour. He is as good of an interviewer as I have ever heard. The highlight of course is Beano Cook on tuesday mornings, titled "Breakfast with Beano". I'm not sure there is a better segment on radio anywhere.

If you have Sirius, I HIGHLY recommend checking out Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan on NFL radio from 3pm-7pm. They break down the players, X's and O's, front office, etc. better than anyone out there.

They also just gave Chris Russo his own channel, but I never really listened to Mike and the Mad Dog. Not sure if his solo show is any good.

All of us here on these boards are a very niche group. Most radio listeners don't care about going in depth about sports. The majority of the people just want to talk about the big news of the day and nothing more.

Another one for the Sirius people.. Scott Ferrall on 101 8pm to 11pm I think. He talks about himself alot, but he says alot of funny stuff too.

Coward is my favorite. A very intertaining show. I dont mind Van Pelt.

werd - Cowherd ain't bad - he is better than most SVP rocks- by far the coolest guy on ESPN, love him and Tirico together

I think we just get sick of hearing them at some point - Dan Patrick was great back in the day - now? cannot stand him

Rome is ok, he is a monster truck aficionado but has good guests and some funny bits

Mike Greenberg? whiny, nasaly b1tch - he is horrible - love Golic though

Sports radio doesn't translate on a national level because *sports* doesn't particularly translate on a national level. The allure of sports is the collective experience it offers fans of a particular team or player. Also, we all appreciate the drama of the quest that can be presented in a championship performance or individual achievement. So, if it's not one of those things, sports is a tough sell the way ESPN and Fox and most sports radio presents things.

"Ferrell on da bench" Dude reminds me of a good friend of mine from Boston. He's still around? I used to really dig his show. Dudes a nut.

I like Cowherd because he takes stances that many guys won't take, but I do get sick of him talking about all the "Right calls" or "good picks" he has made, but he seems to somehow forget his mistakes.

The show that got me into Sports Talk Radio was "Kiley and Booms". 2 guys with completely different opinions and ideas, but it made for good entertainment. Dan Patrick has really gone down hill. He brings his buddies on the show way too much, Olbermann, Reggie Miller etc. Not much analysis.

Chris Kasselius(sp?) was good when he would fill in, but now he does Nascar and some ESPN news stuff.

I'm in MN and our local stuff is TERRIBLE so I'll deal with the National Guys. I like Sporting News Radio and I actually like JT the Brick... haven't listened in quite a while though.

JIM ROME is a MORON!

yeah, he is crazy. He's on Stern's channel every weeknight. He is really big into Hockey, but touches on just about every sport out there.

Agreed.

Also agreed. Patrick is a self-important mister. And things get even worse when Olberdouche stops by to offer his $0.02.

Rome is hilarious when he rips into people. Other than that, it's hit or miss (and mostly the latter). The fake "buzz!" noise is annoying as hell.

Mike Greenberg? whiny, nasaly b1tch

Greenberg belongs on Oprah, not ESPN.

I'd rather listen to static than that ahole. Seriously. Course same goes for most if not all of the others. Don't have Sirius unfortunately and have finally just given up on sports radio entirely. It reminds me of the pre/post-game "shows" on TV, which became totally unwatchable a long time ago. Really it's all a perfect example of what sucks about sports today ie that circus clown mentality which apparently a lot of people love. Bizarro.

AMEN brother, Sirius NFL Network blows away any other NFL talk by a mile. Real X's and O's with real players.

The worst sports talk radio show in the history of man is the Michael Irvin show... Listening to Irvin and Nate Newton create new words is pathetic and Kevin Keilly sp? Maybe the most annoying host on the planet.

LOL @ him having a show. Neil Smith should co-host.

I generally listen to Mike and Mike ... I find them some what entertaining.

I can't stand Collin Cowherd ... I think he's an idiot and most of what he says is moranic.

Irvin's show is next. I find it more tolerable than Cowherd's but some what unpalatable. Irvin has always thought he is God's gift to this world and has a quite obviously slant towards the WR position. I have never liked Irvin ... not when he was a player, not when he was on The Best Damn Sports Show, not when he was on ESPN and not now. Newton doesn't impress either.

Then comes GAC - Galloway and company.

I turn the radio on in the morning ... when Cowherd comes on I turn off the radio and listen to music on my MP3 player. When I drive home I hear Galloway.

If I'm home and Rome comes on ESPN ... I typically change the channel to something else .... anything else
