Signed a new punter earlier today too.

CHANDLER'S CROSS, ENGLAND - Saints Coach Sean Payton announced Monday that the team signed punter Ben Graham to replace Steve Weatherford.

Graham, a 34-year-old who used to play in the Australian Football League, spent more than three seasons with the New York Jets. Graham played in four games this season with the Jets, punting 14 times for an average of 43.3 yards, but was released by the team for the second time this season in late September.

Payton said Monday afternoon that Graham was already with the Saints at their hotel outside London, after flying separate from the team following the Saints' loss to the Carolina Panthers.

``It's always difficult to cut a player that you've had for a while and to release a player like Steve,'' Payton said. ``But I just think that in the end it became a challenge with consistency. We just felt like it hadn't gotten any better and it had actually dropped off.''

Ben was solid for a few years but he had a few shaky games back-to-back this season.

He's certainly capable but not exactly a stand-out punter (there is one! whoever that dude on oakland is!!)

Shane Lechler ins the current Raiders punter.

Ray Guy was the outstanding Raiders punter.

And both are/were pretty darn good!

An article from last December..

http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/REIGNBLOOD/122871

At some point you've probably heard of punter RAY GUY from the Oakland Raiders during the 70's but other than that information, that's all you really know about him. Ray Guy was drafted by the Raiders in 1973 in the 1st round, 23rd overall pick from Southern Mississippi. He played from 1973 - 1986 and is still considered one of the best punters EVER in the NFL. 1,049 punts, 44,493 yards [best season 1971 4,195 yards and longest 74 yards 1977] 42.4 career average/33.8 net career average. 7 x Pro Bowl selections, 3 x Super Bowl Rings. Ray Guy played in 207 consecutive games and never had a punt returned for a TD, honored as one of the Top 300 Players of All-Time in the NFL. Ray Guys unique contribution to punting was his overwhelming hang time, John Madden has been quoted saying "...most of his hangtime punts have been clocked at 6 seconds". Ray Guy would have no problem sacrificing distance for height, because of this, it is thought the hangtime clock was invented because of his legendary kicks. Unfortunately pure PUNTERS are overlooked for the NFL Hall of Fame, hopefully one day Ray Guy and others like him will get their due credit.

Which brings us to:

Oakland Raiders current punter #9 Shane Lechler drafted in the 5th round of 2000 from Texas A&M. 572 punts, 26,541 yards [best season 2003 4,503 yards and longest 73 yards 2003] 46.4 career average/37.5 net career average. 2 x Pro Bowler Shane Lechler's statistics overshadow those of legendary Ray Guy! Yet, how many are aware of this fact, and of the importance of punters in the NFL. Lechler this season is on the verge of shattering the NFL net yard average of 39.6 [r.camarillo 1992] with an astounding 44.3. No other punter in the last 10 years has topped 39.3. Often overlooked, punters play an intricate part in the outcome of many NFL games - we just don't realize it. Maybe it's time to give them the recognition they deserve.
