Hugh 0ne
Steelers | Ward will not be fined for hit Tue, 21 Oct 2008 11:13:40 -0700 Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward will not be fined for his hit on Cincinnati Bengals LB Keith Rivers (jaw) in Week 7, according to a league official. Rivers suffered a broken jaw on the hit and will miss the rest of the season. My take: it was a legal hit, but man was it nasty. And the SOB smiles and laughs when he does it. And it certainly wasn't the first time he's done it. Should the league make a rule change or is that pussification of the league? I guess Ward is a guy you LOVE when he's on your team but hate if he's not. I hate to see a guy hurt for the season, but it's football, played by men, right? Thoughts? MrTed46
I am confused - Nevermind was edited. I think he shouldn't be fined but he needs to calm down. Edited October 21, 2008 by MrTed46

cre8tiff
Thoughts? Gridiron justice will find Mr. Ward, I'm afraid. Edited October 21, 2008 by cre8tiff
H8tank
Hitting people in the face with the crown of your helmet is cheap IMO. I don't know if this hit did that, haven't seen it. But I have seen him do it before. One day he'll get his, and I don't want to hear any stealer crybaby's whine about it.
rajncajn
Ward plays hard & does take some dirty shots, but unlike a player like Harrison I don't think he intentionally means to injure other players (of course I could be wrong). That doesn't necessarily make it right, but there is a difference there. As to how I feel about it as part of the game... If a ref can justifiably determine at the time of the hit whether he was intentionally & obviously trying to injure the other player I've got no problem with a 15 yard flag. I also have no problem with the league handing out fines after they've reviewed the tape and are consistent with their standards and show clear intent to cause injury. STL Fan
The hit was legal when you look at it, but it reminded me of when Sapp blindsided that guy on a pick-off return a couple years ago. Legal - yes. Cheap - probably. But he's been a hard-nosed player his whole career, and I doubt he's worried about retribution.
Randall
The rule needs to be changed. A blindside hit when you are out of the play is wrong. It and the tuck rule need to be changed.

The Sapp hit was on a guy out of the play, but this guy was definitely in the play, he was just not paying attention.

Rivers was actually taking an angle towards the ball carrier which ran right by as Ward laid him out. I don't see how anyone can view this hit as cheap or illegal. Flip_Side
Ward= the blindside master. Go head to head up with Rivers and watch what happens.

I don't see how anyone can view this hit as cheap or illegal. As I mentioned, definitely not illegal, and only cheap in the sense that he took a huge shot at a guy that was obviously defensless. Was there a way to block him without crushing him? Maybe, maybe not. And the guy was in the play for sure. I definitely agree he should not have been fined. I guess it is just a matter of opinions. In my opinion if you are out on a football field at this level hits like that should be expected whether you are looking or not. FishFreak
Gentlemen, this is football and it's a brutal violent sport. The hit was completely legal. If Rivers wasn't hurt for the year this conversation wouldn't even be brought up. Let em play boys, Rivers just got popped cleanly by the best blocking WR of all-time. Ward is a stud and a coaches dream player. I hope the guy gets into the HOF.

The coaches always warn you to have "your head on a swivel."
Ice717
And he has some culpability here as well. The coaches always warn you to have "your head on a swivel." +1 I was thinking the same thing as I read the thread. Also haven't you guys heard the defense yell "watch the crack"? The WR is ment to blindside a LB or SS in that type of situations just like this. I didn't see a thread like this when the Saints guy blew up the Vikings player on one of Bush's return. The only reason people are mentioning this is because a player got hurt and it was Hines Ward. If Marvin Harrison makes this hit no one says anything, (not saying marvin would even make this kind of hit just referencing a guy who doesnt get fined for hard nosed plays.) I do like Ward, but with fans like Menyoudo, how can you like the steelers?
Azazello1313
that is a good, clean hit on a guy making a play directly at the ball carrier. I mean, rivers is like 3 feet from the ball when ward de-cleats him, he is right in the middle of the play. is it ward's fault the guy doesn't see him coming? nothing remotely dirty about that. I feel all greasy thinking about manudo +1'ing me, but that is the truth.

Azazello1313
If Marvin Harrison makes this hit no one says anything starvin marvin might block a dude in the ankles or something. or shoot him. but jacking up a linebacker like that? never happen. Dont Rookie Me........
It was purely an awesome hit and I doubt he was trying to hurt em, but I know he was looking for packback for all the hits he takes going over the middle. Payback is a bitch and Ward is one of the only WR's have you have to worry about hitting you (as a defensive person) I LOVE THAT!

budlitebrad
Suggs said on the radio that the Ravens still have a bounty on Ward after not getting a chance at him the first time.
