bigrocks
It hasn't been announced by the NFL, but my guess is it will soon. If he appeals though, it may be a week or two before he's off the field.

No particular insight here but I snatched up Thomas because of his young wheels. Stecker turns 33 in a few weeks. IIRC Stecker might be the better PPR play as he's more of a 3rd down type. If he appeals though, it may be a week or two before he's off the field. Why do you think it will be soon? What precendent are you going off of, or are you purely guessing. And if it is a week or two before he is off the field, the net time until Bush is back will only be an additional week or two. On an offense where even Duece was a barely marginal contributor, what makes you think either Stecker or Thomas will have any value? Much ado about nothing, fantasy-wise, IMO. Totally, unequivocally disagree. This really has nothing to do with Deuce. Well, maybe a little... as the situation with Bush AND Deuce would mean even MORE reps for Stecker and Thomas. Stecker is most definitely a fantasy option with Bush out. Period. Look at what Stecker did to close out last season with Bush shelved: Week 14 @ Falcons: 107 total yards, 3 catches (13.7 points in a PPR league) Week 15 vs. Cardinals: 141 total yards, 2 TDs, SIX catches (32.1) Week 16 vs. Eagles: 84 total yards, 2 TDs, four catches (24.4) So, what does this tell us beyond Stecker does well against teams that are named after birds? Well, it says that Stecker can definitely get it done with Bush absent. Thomas is more of a threat to Deuce's carries, not Bush/Stecker's. And yes, I'm a Stecker backer because with those three games listed above, he basically won me a league last season. No reason to think the Saints wouldn't slide Stecker right into Bush's position in this offense, especially after performing the way he did last season. Edit: So, to answer the OP's question.... both. Thomas would likely get Deuce's carries and Stecker would continue to get Bush's carries. Seahawks21
Stecker is Bush's backup, Thomas is Deuce's. Both will play and should be startable flex options, Stecker especially in PPR.

Thomas would likely get Deuce's carries and Stecker would continue to get Bush's carries. Agreed here. The way I looked at this situation is that Thomas was only a rookie last year. Stecker was the vet, got the nod over the rookie, and was very productive filling in for Bush last year. For the low man on my RB depth chart, I'll take the guy with the younger wheels. Yeah he's probably pegged more for Deuce's role right now but, comparing build and skills, he's more in between Deuce and Bush than a dead on doppleganger for Deuce. It's only one game but when Thomas filled in for Stecker for the final game of '07 @CHI, he piled up 225 total yards, 12 recs, and a touch. I'll take a chance on that type of upside with my low b*tch RB. Short term (next few weeks)... without a doubt Stecker is the play if you need help at RB especially PPR. Long term... I think Stecker would probably give way to Thomas. Edited October 25, 2008 by kingfish247

darin3
Soooo...how'd Stecker do getting all Bush's touches yesterday? Did he not have 5 catches? Yeah, he only had a couple of carries but this turned out to be a pass-heavy game (not a shock since the Bolts can't stop the pass). If Bush can't play in two weeks, watch Stecker's output rise against the Falcons.

You even posted all his stas from last year, giving the impression he'd do the same thing this year in the same role. I can say pretty confidently that Bush would have performed significantly better in a 37-32 pass-filled game than Stecker's pathetic 5 catches for 26 yards., and 2 rushes for 9 yards. I can see why NO keeps him around as a stable veteran presence for a franchise that's been through quite a bit in the past 4 years... but, IMO, Deuce's best days are behind him. Bush hasn't rushed for more than 73 yards in a game all season. He's averaging 42 rushing yards per game. The Saints have had been in scorefests this season and Bush has been anywhere from studly to average (31 yards rushing, 5 catches against SF, for example). I think this is more an indication as to the type of game this past Sunday's was. Deuce only got 18 carries himself. If Bush is out again in two weeks and Stecker sucks against the Falcons, I'll eat my crow and admit I was wrong about the splits between Deuce/Stecker and Stecker's ability to produce. darin3
Welp, guess we'll never really know how well Stecker would have fared against the Falcons. He was off to a nice start with 3 rushes for 21 yards, including a 12-yard gain, before leaving with a strained hammy. Gotta figure he would have caught several balls with Brees throwing the ball a monstrous 58 times. I was totally ready to eat crow, too. Hmmm, two weeks ago, your Stecker-excuse was that it was a pass-heavy game. This week, in a pass-heavy game, you say "he would have caught several balls with Brees throwing a monstrous 58 times" Which is it? Is Stecker good in non-pass games, or pass games? I stand by my original comment....both he and Thomas are fantasy-irrelevant except for the most desperate of owners.

He scored 8.6 fantasy points two weeks ago, more points than: MJD Ronnie Brown Michael Turner Brandon Jacobs shall I go on? OK... Julius Jones Fred Taylor Justin Fargas So yeah, maybe I mis-spoke or didn't fully explain what I meant in his previous game where he only got 2 carries. Whereas he only got 2 carries, he was still effective in the passing game. Today, he was apparently running better. Say he got... I dunno... 4 more carries - since it was, in fact, a "pass-heavy" game.... Say he finished with 45 yards rushing (about what Bush has averaged this season, by the way) and maybe 5 catches (like 2 weeks ago) for a modest 30 yards. That's still 12.5 fantasy points. Call me desperate, but with injuries and other RBs sucking wind, I'll take that as a RB2 all day long in my larger leagues.
kingfish247
Again, Thomas is the one to own... younger wheels and more versatile than just a 3rd down scat back. If you're not an owner of a healthy Reggie, it's a pretty frustrating RBBC. But the suspensions and injuries can/will create an opportunity. kingfish247
I wouldn't count on the suspensions happening this year. True, but I wouldn't count on them not happening either. Can't remember where I heard it but the appeal is supposed to be heard sometime soon. I also wouldn't speculate about anything the Commish's office will or won't do. The suspensions could come at any time. Besides, it may not even take a suspension. FWIW... In presumably the New Orleans Saints' last week without running back Reggie Bush (knee), our snitch thinks tailback Pierre Thomas will see a few more carries than his normal workload this week. Deuce McAllister was lumbering a bit in practice, and Thomas could be worked in more to keep Deuce fresh. Hardly reliable but Thomas did have 1 more carry and caught 3 more passes than Deuce this week.

If you're not an owner of a healthy Reggie, it's a pretty frustrating RBBC. But the suspensions and injuries can/will create an opportunity. Had Stecker not strained his hammy, Thomas' stats would have looked a whole heck of lot more similar to his stats 2 weeks ago. Consequently, as I noted above, even if Stecker wouldn't have rushed for more than 45 yards (like that other "scat back", Reggie Bush typically rushes for), he still would have caught the ball several times. In fact, in Stecker's stead, Thomas grabbed 5 balls, just like Stecker did 2 weeks ago. I have no idea where all this Thomas love (and Stecker hate) comes from. Thomas had two games early on in the season where he posted double-digits.... when, mind you, Stecker did not play due to injury. Stecker proved himself a capable replacement to Bush late last season. Stats don't lie. Stecker is not a 3rd down scat back. You might want to actually watch some football. :shakeshead: 1-10-NO 45 (7:38) 27-A.Stecker left end to ATL 43 for 12 yards (50-C.Lofton, 26-E.Coleman). I wouldn't count on the suspensions happening this year. You're likely correct and with Bush coming back, this whole conversation is totally moot. darin3
More... Stecker is 1 inch shorter and 2 lbs. lighter than Thomas. Scat back... OK. Nearly all of Thomas' stats were in garbage time playing from behind yesterday. Thomas didn't even get in the game until Stecker was on the sidelines.
