“I think it is about time that we had playoffs in college football,” Obama said Monday on ESPN. “I’m fed up with these computer rankings and this and that and the other. Get eight teams – the top eight teams right at the end. You got a playoff. Decide on a national champion.”

Sorry, just another chance to get into this. Dan Patrick was bringing up the same argument about requiring fans to travel too much. It's all a crock.

First round, one week after conference championships (if you have them). 4 top teams get home-field. That means they get at least 3/4 of the tickets so that means, at most, 25K (but probably closer to 15-20K) people are traveling. Winner goes to the semis, loser goes to some other florida bowl.

So, now you've got 40K from each fan base making the trek to the Florida. Only, you don't because, just like the final 4, football fans with no affiliation to either team will be clamoring for those tickets. Because it's the f'ing final 4! Who doesn't want to go to that? I'm sure the NCAA would give like 1/3 of the tix to each school and sell 1/3 to the public at large through a lottery.

The NC game itself will be like the Superbowl with the number of fans of each team being even more diluted by non-affiliated attendees. In fact, in both the final 4 and NC game, my guess is that it would be all the schools could do to secure enough tickets for their fans. So, maybe each school gets 25% of the tix and the rest are secured by lottery like the final 4. Obviously fans of those schools could then buy them on the open market. But to imply that there'd be some trouble filling the seats because you'd be going to the fan base well too many times is insane.

So, the only downside I can imagine is that the atmosphere at the final 4 games will not be quite the same as if the entire stadium was filled with fans of one team or the other. But you know what? That affects a tiny, tiny sliver of people because most of us are watching on TV anyway. Besides, it's not like there won't be any real fans there so it should still be fine.

Fans (by and large) don't travel to bowl games anyway. Of the 34 bowl games this year, you are likely to see large traveling parties go out for teams having an exceptional season, and that doesn't necessarily mean "good" or "great" season, it means "better than the recent past".

The bowls are made for TV events paid for by the sponsorships and fill 150 hours of holiday season programming that target the 18-54 male demographic. The TV contracts are negotiated by the conferences, and not the NCAA (who don't really do anything in CFB besides enforce rules), and that's where the problem lies with establishing a playoff. There are too many cooks in the kitchen. The SEC, the Big 10, the Big 12, the ACC, the Pac-10, the Big East all have different agendas when it comes to college football and someone needs to sit them down with the NCAA, the TV networks, and even the corporate people to figure something out.

I'm for more than 8 teams, but I realize you have to start somewhere. I like det's plan with playing the first round games early to give the losers an opportunity to go to a different bowl game. Keeps both systems in place.
