Trading for draft picks - Opinions Please

I use to play in this league and they have a spot open now that they might allow me back in the league but my biggest gripe of that league was that they allowed trading for draft picks. It is a 2 player keeper league and for example this year there was a trade where one team traded their 2nd and 6th round draft pick for AP. This to me just does not seem fair even though AP is not a keeper and will be put back in the player pool. Has anyone here played in a league like this? How can a commishioner allow trades like this. So next year the guy who gave up a 2nd and 6th round is out for next year? As we all know on here you can find some studs year in year out that were drafted after the 8th or 9th round. Please help me with the reasoning of allowing for draft picks to be traded.

Thanks

The league that I am the commissioner of keeps up to 3 players from year to year and has allowed the trading of draft picks since we began our league 10 years ago. I have not tracked it but I would say we have had activity of this nature nearly every season. We have turned over about 50% of our ownership from the original 12 guys and we have never had an issue.

Not sure if anyone has had to be replaced the prior to the draft after having traded away picks but if so the new owner would just need to pick his keepers and draft accordingly.

Draft Picks have VALUE, Players have VALUE...why wouldnt you allow them to be traded  after all it is a keeper league which means you are managing for the present and future (for the most part)

Grits what have I ever done to you dude? We joined this Huddle thing almost the same time. What is your deal with me bro?

You probably ticked him off a long time ago in the advice forum. BTW, join dates were reset in 2001with a new board requiring a new registration - he was a member a lot longer than that.

I guess to me Im just trying to figure out what is fair and not fair. To me trading for draft picks is an out that anyone wan make a trade with anyone at anytime. Lets say I trade a first rounder and a 4th rounder but I get to keep 2 keepers. Ok so I lose my first round and get a 2nd round pick and so on. What I am trying to figure out is that with my 2 keepers from the previous year I already have 2 studs or semi studs. What does it matter if I dont have my next draft pick until the 5th round who cares. Year in year out with FF you find that what makes you make the playoffs are typically the adds and drops anyway that you make throughout the year not the trading for draft picks. I guess I see some of the reasoning here but I just feel that nowadays a top 3 round pick could not be as valuable as a 5th 6th or 7th round pick. You never know what your going to get. I mean for instance I drafted Ricky Williams in one of my leagues in the 7th round and he has been a pretty solid play for me.

Bolded part is just it. It is an unknown. In the instance you are discussing, it is a standard keeper league trade. One team trades AP for future potential value with the 2nd and 6th round picks, theoretically giving them an advantage next season if those picks pan out. In exchange, they take the hit in the current season by giving away AP.

Assuming the AP owner was essentially out of the running this season, then planning for next season makes perfect sense. And assuming the guy that received AP is putting himself in a better position to make a run on the title this season, the trade makes perfect sense and to me is one of the most fun strategic aspects of a keeper league.

The only thing I like to point out is that in leagues that allow future picks to be traded, the team giving away the picks should pay in advance for the next season, that way they can not trade away all of their future picks then just leave the league.

This is most important IMO. That way, even if the owner leaves the league, the new owner has a free year to build on.

I commonly used to trade off all of the parts that I could not use next year, and send them to contending teams for draft picks, once I was out of contention, just like what happens in every major sport in existence.
