Heater Holmes
Was Philip Rivers sacked on the Harrison safety ? NFL.com is scoring that as a sack for Harrison. I am in an IDP league & my opponent has Harrison & i am losing by less than a point. what is the stupid rule anyway ? if the defense strips the ball off the QB's hand is it considered a sack ? kpholmes
if the defense strips the ball off the QB's hand is it considered a sack ? That is entirely correct, yes.
Grits and Shins
I think intentional grounding from the end zone also counts as a sack even if the QB is never touched.

Yes, it is considered a sack, and that is correct. If Harrison didn't knock the ball loose, he would have continued forward and finished the sack. After he knocked the ball loose, he then changed his direction to try to recover the fumble that he caused.

You make a good point here, but, what about when a defender crushes a QB from behind and he fumbles on his way to the ground ? Should the defender not get the sack, since he technically fumbled before he was down to complete the sack ?
Robash
i am sure Eli Manning, david tyree & the giants would disagree with that. i dont get rules that try to predict the future. horrible analogy...Eli "Michael Vick'ed" himself away from a sack. Menuedo analogy could use some work also... a sack is simply stopping the QB for a loss behind the line of scrimmage, wether it be a tackle or fumble
Zooty
Another stupid rule Sack=end of play So how can there be a sack and a fumble if the play ends with the sack?
Menudo
Another stupid rule Sack=end of play So how can there be a sack and a fumble if the play ends with the sack? So, in your scenario, if a guy absolutely clobbers the QB on a blindside blitz, and, as he's going down, right before his knee touches the ground, the QB fumbles, that the defensive player should not be awarded a sack ? Sorry, I can't agree with that.

Sorry, I can't agree with that. How about this? A sack is a tackle right? Once a player is tackled he is considered down and the play is over. So how can a fumble occur after the player is tackled/sacked since the play has ended.

This is the case if fumbling the ball not being considered being down though an official sack. It can be compared to the strikeout in baseball where the catcher misses the ball and the runner goes to first, but the pitcher is still credited for the strikeout, although no out was made. I get your point, but, I really don't think you can take a sack away from a players stats just because the QB happened to fumble on his way to the ground. That player deserves that sack. I guess we can just agree to disagree.
