driveby
Smashburger, a Denver-based burger chain offering “fast casual” dining, is coming to Houston just in time for Christmas. What's the word?
AtomicCEO
There is a Smashburger near my work. I've been going there since it was originally called Icon Burger. I think it's really good, but some other people think it's merely an overpriced burger. Big fan. For a dollar they will put a fried egg on your burger, and you can feel your heart speed up a little. Mmmm... restricted arteries...

Azazello1313
huh. never heard of em. looks like there's one right in the same shopping center as my favorite liquor store, guess I'm just not very observant. sorta interested in trying one now though. in other news, 5 guys burgers have come to colorado. this is one kick-ass burger chain. hopefully they get a few more locations soon. Why am I the only one who doesn't buy the 5 Guys hype? I don't think it's anything special at all. The best part is the free peanuts. SheikYerbuti
nice fresh hand-formed, never frozen patties. as many toppings as you want. fresh cut fries. simple and awesome. what's not to love? My biggest complaint is the bun. Yes, the patties are pretty good and I appreciate that they're hand formed (I hope they wash their hands. . .), but they put them on crappy Wonder bread quality buns. Real burgers demand real bread. It's a big component for me. As for the toppings, that's nice and all. I went to a Wendy's recently and noticed that the lettuce and tomato were nice and fresh too, and they have plenty of toppings to choose from also. As for the fries, I've gone to 5 Guys twice. Once the fries were perfectly done. Crispy on the outside, tender and flaky on the inside. The other time they were underdone like a wet noodle. Blech. Azazello1313
so....neither of us felt like cooking tonight, so I suggested we try this joint. not bad at all. reminded me a lot of 5 guys, actually, except maybe a little more expensive, some more interesting customization options, fries not as good. and 15 minutes closer. a nice option to have nearby. Puddy
Apparently these fast food joints finally read about Houston being one of the fattest cities in the country. Congratulations on getting fatter in the near future I'm sure they'll both be in Detroit soon enough
darin3
more good burger news, Carl's Jr. is coming to town. Do we not have Hardee's in Texas? Maybe I'm thinking of somewhere else in my recent travels. Either way, yes, this is good news. I dig Carl's Jr. And THANKS for the link... I have experience with Carl's Jr.'s real estate division and I'm gonna contact them to try scooping them up as a client.

Pretty sure Hardees is only north of the Mason-Dixon line. There are some Carl's Jr in Oklahomo tho. Good luck nailing down some biz. If it works out maybe you could score me some coupons? Yeah, it's just barely south of the MDL, but I've been to a Hardee's in Delaware. E2A: And FWIW, Hardee's wasn't as good as Carl's Jr. in California. Weird. Puddy
And now 5 Guys too! Three of them coming very soon to Michigan as well. Closest one to me is 15 miles.
darin3
Three of them coming very soon to Michigan as well. Closest one to me is 15 miles. I wouldn't go out of my way to get their food. I used to grab a burger/fries from them at the Washington DC airport (can't remember if it was Dulles or Reagan) when I was flying home and was only mildly impressed. E2A on the topic: I'd love it if Smashburger came to Austin. I really like those "shined up" fast-food places like Chipotle. I go to Culver's (a Wisconsin-based chain) quite a bit (right down the street) for some burgers, fries and MMMM, cheese curds, from time to time. Much better than (and just as cheap as) McDonald's or Burger King. Edited January 11, 2009 by darin3

darin3
+1 Except I haven't had the curds. They're good. I loved 'em so much in Wisconsin. Nothing beats a true 'sconny curd, but I'll take what I can get!
AtomicCEO
Pretty sure Hardees is only north of the Mason-Dixon line. There are some Carl's Jr in Oklahomo tho. We're closing a deal with the owner of 40 Hardees in Alabama, so I'm not sure how the regional breakdown is. East/West? I really like those "shined up" fast-food places like Chipotle. It's called "Fast-Casual", and it's getting very big. Some of my favories are: Tokyo Joes Noodles BD's Mongolian Grill (I think these may have gone under, but they were awesome) And, to a lesser extent... Panda Express. Azazello1313
BD's Mongolian Grill (I think these may have gone under, but they were awesome) there's still one downtown. haven't been in a long, long time because it sucks, but I am pretty sure it is still open. and it pisses me off because before BD's opened, there was a a GOOD mongolian bbq the next block over on blake that they ended up putting out of business. and when I say this other place was good, I mean at least they were authentic enough not to give you friggin tortillas like BD's. and then the f'n BD's d00shbags with their tom cruise cocktail routines flippin shrimp or whatever Edited January 12, 2009 by Azazello1313
