Free Kick

I did not see the game but I saw the ESPN highlights of the free kick that was taken in the Arizona game and they were saying that the last time that a free kick worked was in 1968. It appeared to me that because the AZ return man called a fair catch on the punt return, they were allowed a free kick. Again, did not see the game, just the highlights. Can someone explain to me the rules on this? I had never heard of this. Under what circumstances do you get a free kick for a field goal?

I saw a team try this once after their opponent gave up an intentional safety making it a 3 point game. I can't remember who was playing but Team A was winning by 5 points and had the ball DEEP in their own end of the field, like inside the 5 yd line, and it was 4th down with almost no time on the clock. So rather than punt the ball they decided to run it out of the endzone and then kick the ball away from the 20 yd line rather than out of the endzone.

I believe Team B was the Giants. At any rate the receiving team, down by 3 points called a fair catch on the kick after the safety and tried like a 70 yard FG, but missed it.

LOL

So, you're telling us that Team A's punter kicked off from the 20 yard line, and the opposing team caught it at their own 40? That's not a very good kick.

And that was in 1968, right?

First of all, it was not 1968, I believe the person who started this post said the last time it worked was 1968, I assume by 'worked' he means the free kick was succesful.

I clearly stated he missed the FG. And I would say that people with a smattering of intelligience should have been able to tell from my post that my memory on the play was foggy from the 'I can't remember the teams that were playing' part of my post.

But yeah the free kick that was attempted was from around 70 yards or so away.

What's your point?

My point is, the New York Giants haven't attempted a free kick FG since October 23, 1959.

Only three free kick FGs have ever been attempted in the 4th quarter of a game. One was the Chicago Bears, on November 3, 1968. That one was from 43 yards. One was the Washington Redskins on October 5, 1969, from 56 yards. Mark Mosely of the Redskins did try one from 74 yards in the 4th quarter of a game against the Giants in 1979. But, there were no safeties, intentional or otherwise, in that game. The final score was 14-6, New York.

So, my point - and the reason I'm laughing at you - is that the situation you described never happened.

lol, your hilarious. I was just pointing out that I had seen one attempted once and I admitted not remembering things exactly.

So, I had a foggy memory from a game I watched when I was 12 years old! At least I did remember one of the teams involved and I had the distance within a few yards and I was going from memory and I was only trying to add to the idea that they are uncommon and you have nothing better to do with your time than to laugh at my memory of the situation.

I obviously was watching the game when the free kick was attempted since I had "some" of the info correct or do you have a site at your fingertips that you can access to prove I was not watching the game as well?

Well Done!! You win. Your stat checker is better than my memory from nearly 30 years ago. Bravo! dumba$$

I know this is about the "free kick"

but what about the "drop kick" when can you do a drop kick for an extra point?

didnt Flutie do this when he was with the Patriots?

Yes, in his last game.

And it can be done in any play for a FG attempt.

A lot more were attempted to end the first half:

As good as the info from these boards can be, people like you are what makes using them not worth the bother.

I was simply joining in on a discussion about free kicks. And despite the fact that the point of my post was not to prove my ability to google and/or memorize such mundane things as the circumstances surrounding a free kick that occurred in a game in 1979 as much as it was to simply acknowledge that as rare as they are I did remember seeing one attempted once a long time ago and yet there you were lurking in the shadows just waiting for someone to post something that is not 100% accurate so you can pounce on the opportunity to show off your ability to google football stats. Lucky me to be your latest target.

And then when your pointless tactics to attempt to miliate someone caused them to retaliate in kind you decide to act the victim with a post like the one I quoted here.

Nice life you have there.

I have no problem with anyone who has a fuzzy recollection of something that might or might not have happened at some point in the past.

Heck, I forget the exact details of things now and then.

But what I don't do is go online and pretend to remember something that never could have ever happened.

The ficticious example that you chose to throw out there shows a complete lack of football knowlege and understanding. I had no idea who had attempted a free kick from where or at what time. But your ridiculous rendition of events shows that you don't understand the game.

First of all, no team would take an intentional safety up by 5 with seconds remaining on the clock in the 4th quarter. Proposing that makes you dumb.

Second, no kick after a safety would be fielded for a fair catch at the opposing 40 yard line. That makes you dumber.

Third, no team would try a 70 yard FG, even on a free kick, with only a couple of seconde left in the game. The odds of scoring would be much greater simply throwing a hail mary. That makes you dumbest.

So, while we can all understand and excuse your lack of memory, it's your lack of understanding of the game of football - as evidenced by you initial post - that is more concerning.

Well I will say this for you, your arrogance and stupidity are limitless.

And I was wondering, why are you so concerned with my understanding of the game of football?

If you thought my post was 'dumb' or 'false' why did you even bother to respond to it?

What is interesting about your claim is even though you say I was pretending to remember something that could never ever have happened, I still managed to be within a few yards of the distance and I remembered one of the teams involved and I had the correct quarter. That was a remarkably coincidental 'Pretend' memory.

While I am far from an expert on the game of football as a Recognized Football Official with the Illinois High School Association I would say it is safe to say that I have a pretty good understanding of the game.

And nice to see you take your own advice and not go with the personal attacks. Now go back to your room in your mom's basement and google something esle to prove somebody wrong about.
