KC Chiefs GM (and coach?)

Just a thread to keep up on talk surrounding this situation. Some of the things flying around here in KC:

1. Scott Pioli. Certainly first on the list of a lot of teams right now.

2. Marty Schottenheimer. He was spotted in town yesterday. Some talk around here having Marty as GM and bringing in Cowher to coach.

3. Bill Cowher. The #1 coaching candidate right now. A new Chiefs GM has the power to make this move now. Clark Hunt has indicated he will not stand in the way if the new GM wants to change coaches.

4. Dick Vermeil. profootballtalk.com has a blurb about Vermeil returning as president of the club. I would NOT be in favor of this.

Lots of possible scenarios, and this doesn't include any other possible options out there. Gonna be an interesting next 30 days for the Chiefs.

My first hunch: if the Chiefs somehow cannot land Cowher, I think Herm gets one more year. A new GM may see it as a "free year" so to speak. See the team, evaluate the talent with all blame going to Herm when it fails. Basically buys a new GM a year with the fans.

My dream scenario: Marty as GM and Cowher as coach. OR, if Cowher wants total control, give it to him.

VERMEIL ISN’T TALKING

Posted by Mike Florio on December 17, 2008, 11:06 p.m.

In the wake of our report from Tuesday night regarding rumors linking former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil to the coming vacancy at the top of the organization, we’re hearing that Vermeil is declining opportunities to speak publicly about the situation.

Although Vermeil’s position seems to suggest that perhaps something is percolating, a league source tells us that the rumors of a Vermeil return are off the mark.

“Anyone who suggests that Vermeil may be returning [to the Chiefs] in any capacity is smoking crack,” the source said, pointing to Vermeil’s personnel decisions and draft record as the basis for the team’s current predicament.

Another name to watch, we’re told, is Buccaneers pro personnel director Mark Dominik. There’s chatter that Domenik might be on the short list of candidates for the G.M. position.

Vermeil was on the radio this morning and states he has not spoken to anyone about the situation and stated it is a "bad rumor".
