jaguars72
As a, sorry to say Detroit Lions fan, We can now focus our attention to the 2009 draft picks. I know Detroit gets the number one pick but trying to figure out where Dallas falls in with their 9-7 record. I'm figuring on maybe 17th with their pick. Now with Millen out of the picture, there is actually a chance we may do something right with these picks. Hey, Miami did it this year so there is always hope. If Det brings in a good coach and a good qb, they are actually in a very atlanta like situation, except in a much weaker division. Det could win the division next year. Calvin johnson is a stud, imagine how good with a real qb and a real game plan. Kevin Smith is probably decent with an improved oline. They have a few playmakers on defense, but need to draft and play the fa market smart, but its not impossible.
Sgt Ryan
Detroit wont win 4 games next year. They have no talent on d outside of Ernie Sims, and their OL is terrible. With no QB, average at best RB, and only 1 real playmaker on this roster, this team needs 3 or 4 great drafts to be competitive one day. jaguars72
It all starts with a GM and coaching staff that knows what they are doing. So hiring someone knowledgeable should be top priority. I think Detroit will get 3 of the top 33 picks in the draft. Just hope we don't pick a WR again
Footballjoe
I would think you would draft a QB unless you could trade down and pick up a few more picks. However, not many teams are willing to trade up to the #1 pick due to the contract cost.
jaguars72
I agree that it might be hard to trade that 1st pick because of the huge contrat that the number one pick gets, however, I didn't think it was possible to trade Williams and get the picks that we did get. A 1st and 3rd round pick from Dallas.
Riffraff
With a couple franchise level OLs and QBs, it would be hard to move down. Teams can just get a good player to drop. All depends on how they grade out. A QB may drop to their next pick (Cowboys), but the OL will not.

IF the average numbers per game doesnt improve next year, the deal is a huge bust.
jaguars72
I was surprised on how ineffective Williams was since the trade. Though, he wasn't having a great season in Detroit either. I'm hoping that if the schedule works out the Dallas pick will be 15th overall.

It isn't impossible but very difficult this year. Detroit's not doing well with the cap if this is right.

budlitebrad
It should be easier for Detroit since they have the Miami and Atlanta blueprints to follow, but knowing them, they'll screw it up and hamstring themselves salary-wise with crap first round picks. Sgt Ryan
It might too soon to call it a bust, but i bet the Cowboys would do trade backs if they could. No way I would at this point. Dallas is loaded with picks still and wouldnt be able to sign everyone under the rookie cap. Dallas looks to be drafting 19th or 20th. If Williams becomes what he was in Detroit prior to this year, and healthy he is a steal for a 1 and 3. picks are not sure things by any means, and Dallas has wasted so many picks over the years, Ill take my chances with Williams over anyone at that point in the draft Dallas picks 2nd - Dallas 3rd - Clevelands pick 4th - Detroits pick 4th - Dallas 5th - Dallas 5th - Tennessee pick 6th- Dallas 7th - Detroit pick 7th - Dallas Edited December 29, 2008 by Sgt Ryan
BeeR
DET should not IMO give up on their young QBs, who really didn't have much chance to prove themselves on this team lacking in so many ways. IMO K Smith will be fine. DL then OL should be the priorities. Hon mention to secondary. A decent TE would be an interesting idea also. Do you really think this team can rebound quickly. Miami and Atlanta were competitive last year, just didnt know how to win. Detroit gets its ass handed to them every week, and cant even compete. Its going to take more than a rookie QB, and a couple of draft picks to fix the mess Matt Millen left. gilthorp
This is the NFL. Anything can happen, and most anything crazy has before. To say in December of 2008 that they won't win 4 games in 2009 is simply talking out your ass. Period. Do I think they will win more than 4 games? Ask me in August of next year. The Holy Roller
I think they should draft a WR. I'm with you. How they can pass on that Crabtree kid I do not know.

You cant say for sure anymore next August than I can say right now. I'd be a lot more confident in August than I would nine months earlier. The draft, new coaches, pre-season (didn't Detroit go 4-0 this pre-season?) all will factor in as known quantities. Right now these things are all complete unknowns. Having said that, I will certainly bet money with anyone who wants to take Detroit to finish .500 or better.

With no QB, average at best RB, and only 1 real playmaker on this roster, this team needs 3 or 4 great drafts to be competitive one day. I'm not sure Sims is all that good. And I'n not sure that the Lions are going to need 3 or 4 good drafts to be competitive, but I think that two for certain is required. But I agree with the 4 games prediction. For the Lions to significantly improve next year, they are going to have to hit on just about all of their picks next year. Given Detroit's draft history, that's highly unlikely, even with Millen gone. The Lions need to replace 6 or 7 guys on defense. They need 3 guys on the OL. They need a QB. They need to replace the entire coaching staff, other than Shawn Jefferson (WRs coach) and Sam Gash (RBs coach). And they have no idea who will be calling the shots in the front office. There are too many needs to rebound in one year.
