keggerz
I don't have the time to put them all together but I will edit this post as people add the trees. However, let me start with this one: Belicheck, Mangini, Crennel Others to be done: Walsh Holmgren Parcells to be continued Edited December 29, 2008 by keggerz
Randall
Belichik's assistants haven't been successful but isn't Belichik part of the Parcells tree?
Easy n Dirty
Belichik's assistants haven't been successful but isn't Belichik part of the Parcells tree? Yup. Charlie Weis and Al Groh at a minimum belong on that tree also. Maybe Tom Coughlin too, he was on the staff of at least one of those Giant Super Bowl teams. keggerz
Belichik's assistants haven't been successful but isn't Belichik part of the Parcells tree? yeah but then guys can split off and have their own tree too
Czarina
Clearly they both left before they were fully cooked. Either that or they're really following the Belichick model by sucking at their first HC job.
Randall
yeah but then guys can split off and have their own tree too Very true, a sub-branch that can come back and beat the Master.
Cameltosis
yeah but then guys can split off and have their own tree too That is why they call it a tree and not a branch. Belichick can branch out and have several under him, but ultimately he is part of the Parcells tree.

ts
Who was HC in New York when Lombardi and Tom Landy were assistants? Allie Sherman I believe ... although Lombardi if not Landry may have been there for the last year or two of the Jim Lee Howell era ... I'd have to go look it up to be sure. E2A - I had it backwards ... they were assistants only during the Howell era (they were Howell hires) each departing just a year or two prior to Sherman's arrival in 1961 - Lombardi in 1959, Landry in 1960. Chavez
Probably just as impressive is the Schottenheimer tree: - Bill Cowher ------ Marvin Lewis ------ Ken Wisenhunt - Herm Edwards - Tony Dungy ------ Lovie Smith ------ Rod Marinelli ------ Mike Tomlin - Wade Phillips More impressive if you take Herm Edwards out. I thought Edwards would be under Dungy, as far as that goes.
Chavez
Allie Sherman I believe ... although Lombardi if not Landry may have been there for the last year or two of the Jim Lee Howell era ... I'd have to go look it up to be sure. I recall hearing a story about someone wandering through the Giants front office while Lombardi and Landry were there - he walked past one office, and there's Lombardi furiously diagramming and erasing plays on a chalkboard; he walks past another office, Landry is in another office, watching game film; he walks out into the reception area and there's Howell reading the newspaper. Seahawks21
George Halas---- The rest of them This is probably the most accurate of the responses to this thread. Bill Walsh isn't the trunk of any tree, simply a large branch with ripe foilage. He didn't invent football. The guys that deserve the credit are the coaches during the first 10 years of football. These coaches invented fundamentals, then taught them to the guys that taught the guys that taught Bill Walsh, who taught the guys in his "tree". The whole reference to a coaching tree being in likeness to a family tree just annoys me. It isn't a family. It is just knowledge that is passed on, and the tree should start much higher than Bill Walsh or Sweatshirt Bill.
Pope Flick
George Halas---- The rest of them He is the root of The Tree, and all branches and twigs (really, what else is Mike Tice?) by default. In that case, it should probably start even higher than Halas, with Pop Warner or something. Sid Gillman is the fount from which all modern offense springs, as far as (relatively) latter-day coaches having a tremendous impact.
