chester
Probably a bad title, but... When a QB slides feet first, it's a penalty to hit him. Which guy is the QB? Is the QB the guy that gets the snap/the guy with the dot on his helmet/the guy with a certain number... My point is - if a wildcat formation had the RB getting the snap and slid feet first and was hit, would it be a penalty on the guy that hit him? Or if the QB went out as a WR and sllid feet first could you hit him? There are other scenarios, just curious if anybody knows the exact rule. edit for grammer Edited December 31, 2008 by chester
MikesVikes
Probably a good reason for the Wildcat to go away. Many QBs get injured during play after an interception. Not sure what would be stopping him from getting hurt during a Wildcat formation. Unless it's still the player with the green dot on his helmet. Big John
It is a misnomer that it applies only to the QB. any player sliding is automatically down in the same rule. NFL Rule 7, Section 4, Article 1 An official shall declare dead ball and the down ended..... ( c ) whenever a runner declares himself down by sliding feet first on the ground. The ball is dead at the spot of the ball at the instant the runner so touches the ground. Quarterback is not mentioned in this rule.

Seahawks21
Good pull BJ. I didn't know that. Now I understand what Shaun Alexander was trying to do! He was trying to coax late hit penalties! Seriously though, if a back or receiver were to slide on a run, he would get blasted anyways. I wonder if it is ever going to occur to an offensive player to try and use this to his advantage and coax a late hit penalty.
tazinib1
On a personal note, I dove into my 2 previous marriages feet first.

John, did you have to look this up or did you know it?
Big John
And if the refs even know this. John, did you have to look this up or did you know it? It was a similar case for a MIN @ GB game where the MIN player took a knee and was then shoved and no penalty was called. Then the NFL office said there should have been a flag as any player doing that should have been ruled down. Only thing I looked up was the exact rule wording so I could quote it. edit to add, though it is not in the rulebook, the officials are directed to be more picky when the hits come to the QB, meaning a QB himself and not a RB in a QB slot for example. Big Country
by the thread title, I thought this was going to ask waht QB was a first round pick, an early first round pick............
Hat Trick
And if the refs even know this. Said player could always tell the ref right before the play in many different ways that could get the refs attention to at least give them a shot at it being called. True, but we all know now that ANY player sliding can't be hit! I wonder how many defensive players know this.
