if LT is cut.

I'm in the boat that he was injured all year. Still has something in the tank. Oh, of course, he is on my keeper league.

Where could he suceed?

I don't see him getting cut if he can regain his health. When he was a little healthy this year he looked almost like his old self.

Where if he was? Denver? Tampa Bay? Arizona?

I wouldn't be surprised to see New England look into him...Morris/Maroney are injury prone, Jordan is likely leaving (just my guess)...that leaves them with Faulk, who has always been great as a 3rd down/situational back, but has never been given a BB vote of confidence as a primary back. But seems there's no way LT comes back to SD is there? I think I have the numbers right, someone correct me if wrong but they'd either keep him at an $8m cap hit or release him at a $2m cap hit...seems like a foregone conclusion.

That was the consensus on NFL Radio yesterday. New England made the most sense. It doesn't mean it will happen, but LT would immediately improve that team even if he were 75% of his old self.

And LT would automatically transform himself from a SD sports hero, into just another Rodney Harrison/Junior Seau turncoat.

And you can kiss AJ Smith's fat ass goodbye as well if LT is cut. The backlash from the public would be enormous. That bastard was never intended to have the GM job anyway. Smith has used too many get out of jail free cards the past 2 years for my taste.

Listening to some San Diego radio, a lot of Chargers fans are aready awfully miffed at LT for the end of last season and his attitude/toughness this season. Public opinion could always get worse, but LT is already in the sh*t storm.

The Union-Tribune is speculating that LT will be released. This isn't SA fall from grace territory, but its pretty damn close. We have very few sports stars here in San Diego. I'm getting sick of this town being such a downer as far as sports goes.

Why didn't they keep Michael Turner and make him a starter choice last year? If he's released there will be a mess down there.

That's BS. LT should stay a sports hero in SD regardless if he is cut. If he's cut he should go to the team that gives him the best chance to win.

My statement was in regards to him going to NE. Look, I know a player should do whatever it is in his best interest to win a Championship, but we are talking about NE here. It just leaves a sour taste in the mouth is all. And it makes hating AJ Smith that much easier.

SD has to be kicking themselves everytime they wanted Turner run the ball. Talk about letting 1 get away. Of course I am in the same boat as SD as I traded away D-Williams as part of a trade to land me LT in 2006 and I kicked myself every game this year after week 4 for it. Sigh.

Unfortunately for the Chargers, the real LT breakdown happened one year too late. Atlanta took advantage, but there were several doubters of Turner's abilities as a starter.

WEIGHING THE OPTIONS WILL DECIDE LT'S FATE

By Kevin Acee

Friday, January 16, 2009

The Chargers – meaning President Dean Spanos, General Manager A.J. Smith, Vice President Ed McGuire and head coach Norv Turner – will consider four options with regard to LaDainian Tomlinson's future with the team.

Within the next month, they will either keep him at his current salary level, approach him about a contract renegotiation, try to trade him or release him.

All four options – releasing him or attempting to work out a new contract, or both, appear to be the most likely scenarios – will be weighed with several factors in mind. And all those factors can really be boiled down to one objective.

“How do we do all the things we need to do,” Smith said Friday. “That's what we have to figure out.”

The Chargers have several young players whose contracts expire over the next two years. Philip Rivers, Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNeill and Shawne Merriman are due to become unrestricted free agents after the 2009 season.

With Tomlinson due to make $6.725 million and also count an additional $2.066 million toward the salary cap based on the prorated portion of his signing bonus, any renegotiation would actually be asking Tomlinson to take a pay cut. Renegotiations for the sake of helping a team make room under the cap generally involve a highly paid star taking a lower salary but making up for it in bonus money.

Asking him to rework his contract would leave the decision on whether to stay up to Tomlinson, and there may be teams willing and in a better position to pay him more than the Chargers.

The Chargers likely would not want to guarantee Tomlinson too much, because of the point he is at in his career. Plus, in regards to the salary cap, they are already on the hook for the $2.066 million of signing bonus money from the contract he signed in 2004.

The willingness even to think about parting ways with Tomlinson is not just because of money.

There also is the fact he is going to be 30 in June and has finished the past two seasons with serious injuries. Additionally, his unhappiness with the offense has not gone unnoticed in the organization.

Should the team offer Tomlinson a reworked contract – and taking the $8.791 million cap hit does not seem doable – he could reject the deal. That would essentially force the Chargers to release or trade him.

The trade market, according to several sources, would likely bring the Chargers a mid-round draft pick. And out of respect for Tomlinson, who has spent eight years selling spamshirts and breaking records as a Charger, the team probably would release him rather than put him through the indignity of being on the trade market.

If the Chargers do retain Tomlinson at his current salary, they will face the same dilemma next year. Tomlinson is due to make $8 million in 2010. His 2011 salary would be $9.275 million.

Good grief. As much as I hate to admit it, maybe releasing him is the best way to go. Its just that I'm tired of seeing major San Diego stars going to different teams and succeeding. We are all too familiar with it here. Just don't go to New England LT...that's all I ask.

 Would you rather have him go to Denver so he can run all over the SD D twice a season?

+1

And if there is any bitterness with the split, LT would gladly try to help Denver finally get past SD in the West. Denver would also be a nice fit for LT since it's essentially a rite of passage these days to end up hurt if you're a Denver RB. LT would fit right in.

You did have Tony Gwynn, one of the best hitters in MLB history.

That's true. After what Green Bay suffered this year when trading Favre imagine the insanity there if they traded LT.

This is probably just talk to get him to redo his contract.

It didn't take very long for Green Bay fans to figure out they'd made the right move.

Actually yes as strange as they may sound. My hatred for the Pats runs deep my friend.

And I think LT's hatred does too! Is it too far back for people to remember him wanting to kill every patriot after that playoff game on the 50 yd line. Then saying he wouldnt play for THAT COACH(CHEATACHECK) in the pro bowl. If he plays for them the respect for him takes a big hit! IMO
