Shorttynaz
Pittsburgh police will deploy their own Steel Curtain on Sunday night to keep postgame Super Bowl revelry in check. A "full contingent" of more than 400 law enforcement officers will be on patrol during and after the game, city police spokeswoman Diane Richard said yesterday. "It is the focus of law enforcement to maintain a peaceful and controlled celebration, perform crowd control management throughout the city and safeguard against damage to public and private property," LINK
Czarina
Reminds me a little of the players bitching a few years ago about making their travel plans before they even played the AFC championship game. Maybe they should see a doctor about their problem with premature celebration. It can be a little embarrassing.

jaxfactor
So what are you suggesting. That they just go about Sunday evening like any normal Sunday? Whether you know it or not, police have to plan ahead for things like this. Yes, they did say"celebration", but like I said they have to prepare. My brother is a cop for the Pittsburgh Police Dept. and he has been through this before. The cops have to prepare for what would be the hardest scenario, and that would be a Steelers victory. Yes, if they lost you'd probably have a few a-holes terrorizing the streets, but for the most part, Pittsburgh streets will go crazy with a W. I'm not just saying this because I'm a Steeler fan. I'm sure the Philly police prepared very early for if/when the Phillies won the WS. I'm sure there was mayhem in Boston the year before. And I'm pretty certain that both New York and Boston police were prepared for an on the streets victory celebration before last year's SB. More media trying to stir up the pot and fire up the other team. Well, if you can't get fired up for this game, you shouldn't be on the field. If they don' then they are just being silly. Of course they have to get ready and have a plan for both senarios, if they didn't they would be very unprepared and frankly stupid not to. Skippy
This city has been through this five times. Six if you count the one they lost. There is no way this city should just sit back and wait. Having been a part of a celebration down on Carson street of the South Side of Pittsburgh after XL, I very much think the police getting ready for this Sunday is very prudent. I would be upset if they were not. Now read what I just said and realize that no where in there did I suggest that the Steelers already won or were a lock for a win. I am just wise enough to know what happens if they win. Control of the masses, I mean tens of thousans of people, that will be leaving bars and party places will be very much needed. MikesVikes
I'm guessing that 11 PM Sunday night is a little too late to make a plan. I'm also guessing that similar plans will be made in Arizona. Edited January 29, 2009 by MikesVikes

I think that the talk part was for us Pittsburghers. They want to make clear that there are going to be areas shut down and also to let the crowd know that a hugh police presence will be on site. They are most likely trying a mental approach at keeping the masses under control. IMHO
MTSuper7
All they needed to was say "potential celebration" instead of "celebration"....
cre8tiff
In this instance the terms "celebration" and "riot" are synonymous.

MikesVikes
This does remind me of the 1998 season when they played "We're going to Miami" all over the radio airwaves. The Super Bowl was played in Miami that year. Of course Atlanta played in that game and the Vikes did not.
darin3
Dumb. Who cares if Pittsburgh is prepping like this? As others have stated here, there will be crowds everywhere no matter if they win or lose. Obviously, if they win, they'll need an increased police presence. If they lose, heck, they still could. E2A: I'm sure one could rewind exactly one year and learn that Boston and New York both had similar plans in place well before Super Bowl Sunday. These are the same people that would blast the city for not being prepared. What a joke.
Czarina
Once again, for those hard of hearing or reading comprehension...or maybe you don't read a thread through before adding in your ? I don't think anyone really has a problem with this, it's just busting chops. And again, everyone really does know that any city involved in a major sporting event like this has to prepare for crowd control post-game (win or lose). If the spokesperson had simply couched his statement a tad, it would have never even made a thread here. It's just a at the Stillers fans. I'll be so glad when this game is finally over with. Two weeks is just way too long for a bunch of people to have nothing to talk about.

Good thing the Pats aren't in the Bowl again this year. Any one expressing anything other than The Patriot Way® would be considered "hater". Randall
Chris Matthews was talking about Obama and Biden pulling for the Steelers. He didn't know the team was called the Steelers because of steel workers. He mentioned the Pirates and thought the steelers were stealing something. He was talking to the mayor and had to be schooled. God some people live in a bubble.
Dirty Sanchez
Local sports talk radio in AZ was talking about having a celebration/parade even if the Cardinals lose the Super Bowl. Now that's just ridiculous! The bandwagon Cardinals fans are just happy to be there.

i_am_the_swammi
Its not just the Pitt PD....Pittsburgh-area schools have delayed opening on Monday 2 hours. They are saying its so all the kids and teachers can watch the game and not have to get up early/call in sick.
