Morgan returns to Saints after 1-year absence

By Larry Holder

Nearly a year of retirement apparently helped rejuvenate linebacker Dan Morgan enough to where he wanted to play again.

The NFL and the New Orleans Saints granted his wish as the league reinstated the former Pro Bowl defender and Morgan is back on the Saints roster.

Morgan, 30, signed a one-year deal with the Saints last March. But Morgan didn’t participate in any of the team’s offseason programs and retired two months later. The former first-round pick filed his reinstatement papers in January.

“We are looking forward to seeing him compete with our current group of linebackers,” Saints coach Sean Payton told the Sun Herald on Friday.

Morgan should compete for a job at either weakside or strongside linebacker where Scott Shanle and Scott Fujita currently man those starting roles, respectively. Last year, Morgan was slated as a weakside backer behind Shanle.

From an IDP standpoint this could be very big news with a very good MLB already in place & a much improved & more aggressive scheme from Williams. I've got to wonder though just how much Morgan has left in the tank.

“Yes, I know I’ve had some concussions,” Morgan recently told ESPN. “But I think the public has kind of blown that out of proportion. They don’t know my exact situation. My concussions weren’t severe. I never had the bad headaches or the memory loss that they talk about in those studies. I’ve seen all those studies and talked about them at length with my doctors and I feel good about the situation.

“Believe me, I have three young children and if I were at all concerned about this, I wouldn’t be going back on the field.”

Morgan said he hasn’t had a concussion in three years, and has and will continue to take every precaution when it comes to concussions.

“I feel better than I have at any point since before my rookie season in the NFL,” Morgan said. “I’ve been working out very hard and I feel great. Last year, I was down in New Orleans and I was coming off shoulder problems and my wife was pregnant with our third child and back in Charlotte. It just didn’t feel like the right place or the right time and I made the decision to retire. But the year off has refreshed me and I’m very anxious to get back out there.”

 I hope this is all true, but it sounds to me like he's trying to sell it to everyone.

+1

I understand you've had nothing to do with your life for the past year... but you're more than likely one concussion away from permanent brain damage.

It may be too late. That one concussion may have already come.

  • 3 months later...

And the party is over before it could get started yet again....

Considering I had bet he wouldn't make it thru camp uninjured I guess I shouldn't be too shocked that he decided to hang em up....again.

Dan Morgan To Retire

Posted by Aaron Wilson on June 8, 2009, 4:45 p.m. EDT

New Orleans Saints oft-injured linebacker Dan Morgan has decided to retire from the NFL, according to his agent.

Drew Rosenhaus, via his Twitter account, announced that Morgan is hanging up his cleats.

“Dan Morgan has informed the Saints that he has decided to retire due to continued injuries,” Rosenhaus wrote. “Dan would like to thank the Saints for the chance to come back this year, but injuries would not let him continue his career.

“His decision is final and he will be moving on to focus on his restaurant business in Charlotte. Dan also wants to be able to spend more time with his wife and children.”

Morgan is a former Carolina Panthers first-round draft pick who played at the University of Miami.

Glad he decided to do it now & not try to tough it out when his body wouldn't hold up. I think most fans realized he wouldn't make it, but I won't pretend we didn't have high hopes he could return. Good for him that he realized there were more important things than football.

I guess. Would have been nice to have him make the decision before the draft and FA began....
