Broncos cuts

Winborn surprises me a little.

I'm once again concerned about my Broncos. If the owner was going to fire the management team, why wait? Oh, right, the owner simply did what the new coach wanted. Wait, wasn't that why Shanny was fired, cuz he had too much power?

fooked again.

Winborn is a huge surprise to me. However, I'm not familiar with the system DEN will be installing on defense, and if Winborn fit into that. So, I'm also a bit clueless on that.

Let go of the Shanny thing, and give the new guy some trust and respect. Shanny had too much power and not enough Ws. Simple as that. Heavens! DEN is drafting ahead of HOU for the 2nd consecutive year. What does that tell you?!

I like the DEN coaching change.

Not possitive, but I think Engleberger and N. Jackson are always getting cut around this time of year, and inevitably are invited back after injuries to the starters occur. I always thought Engleberger was pretty solid, if unspectacular. I don't think he fits into a 3-4, though.

And I read that D. Robertson was going to count 16 mil against the cap......so that's a no-brainer.

So far, I like what they have done in the front office. The old ways weren't working, so Bowlen is shaking everything up. Good for him. Better that than end up like Detroit, with Millen at the helm for almost a full decade. I'm really looking forward to next season now to see REAL change (especially on defense, obviously).

Broncos Make Another Move, Release Bly

DenverBroncos.com

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A day after releasing six players, the Broncos have made another transaction.

On Tuesday the team announced the release of Dre' Bly.

Bly, an 11th-year player, spent the previous two seasons with the Broncos after they acquired him in a trade from Detroit on March 2, 2007.

Bly started all 16 games in both seasons in Denver, posting 57 and 77 tackles respectively. He also notched seven interceptions in his two years with the Broncos.

D.J. Williams reworked his contract to provide the Broncos with $3.6 million in cap relief.

Williams had a $4.5 million roster bonus due March 2, but it's now being converted to a signing bonus prorated over the length of the contract. The club is now over $30M in cap savings this week.

Apparently, it cost them north of $2M to the 2009 cap to cut Bly.

That's fine, dude stinks. Great moves so far for the donkey's. I guess the D can get worse but not by much. Freeing up cap space tells me that they are going to go after some talent this offseason via free agency.

Radio DJ is saying that Tank Johnson should be the top priority for DEN FA. Is this guy an ass or was that ditching his car episode the only questionable thing he's done?

I think it was Lance Briggs who ditched his car.

Tank had the assult rifles and magazines in his possession illegaly. He also got into something that got his best friend shot and killed. I'm sure some bears homers could help you out here.

This comes from Klis so take it as such

Broncos are expected to add seven or eight free-agent players. Their needs: a starting cornerback, one or two safeties, a nose tackle, one or two defensive ends, one or two linebackers, a No. 3-type receiver, a backup quarterback and possibly a running back. That's all.

Here's a closer look.

• Cornerback: The market-setter was the $22.5 million guarantee Indianapolis used to re-sign Kelvin Hayden. Now, St. Louis' Ronald Bartell, Atlanta's Domonique Foxworth and Miami's Andre Goodman are seeking huge contracts. The Broncos, who traded Foxworth for a seventh-round draft pick before the 2008 season, may seek the more affordable Bryant McFadden or Phillip Buchanon, if he doesn't re-sign with Tampa Bay.

• Nose tackle: Grady Jackson and Colin Cole are seeking significant deals. New England's Mike Wright would be affordable and could help teach the 3-4 techniques to Broncos' linemen.

• No. 2 quarterback: The Broncos unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate a contract extension last summer with veteran Patrick Ramsey. While Ramsey prepares to enter the open market, the Broncos will want to bring in another quarterback, either in the draft's later rounds or in free agency, to compete with Darrell Hackney for the role as Jay Cutler's backup. A trade for New England's Matt Cassel would appear to be too pricey.

The free-agent backup class includes Ryan Fitzpatrick, Dan Orlovsky, J.P. Losman and Kyle Boller.

• Safeties: Miami is trying to re-sign Yeremiah Bell, which could leave the New York Giants' James Butler and New England's James Sanders as possibilities.

• Linebackers: There is a need for both an inside and an outside linebacker. Among the free agents available are Monty Beisel, Clark Haggans, Andra Davis and Rosevelt Colvin.

• Defensive ends: The top 3-4 defensive ends, Chris Canty and Igor Olshansky, probably are too expensive.

• No. 3 receiver: It's easy to look at the offensive system Broncos coach Josh McDaniels coordinated in New England the past two seasons and see Eddie Royal playing the slot role of the Patriots' Wes Welker.

If Royal moves inside, veteran Brandon Stokley could become a No. 4/swing receiver while the Broncos seek an outside receiver. The trick is finding an affordable veteran who will rebound from a disappointing season.

• Running back: Derrick Ward likely has priced himself beyond the Broncos' budget. McDaniels may rely on ever-reliable running backs coach Bobby Turner to find another late- round gem in the draft.

Good, so long as they don't cost too much. Don't overpay. This will give them the flexibility to use one draft pick on offense to pick up a #2 WR in the 2nd or 3rd round.

Why do the Broncos need to address #2 WR again - especially given that they have to stock almost every D position?

I'd sure like to see Woodyard & Larsen worked into the LB crew. Those two guys look like they have the ability to start credibly in the NFL, and both guys play with great enthusiasm and have great noses for the football. With the team going to a 3-4 and intending to move a couple of the young DEs to LB, I'm not sure LB is nearly as big of a priority as getting credible 3-4 D linemen. The only guy on the roster right now that looks like he could play in the front 3 is Kenny Peterson. Crowder seems to have the right capabilities, but he's been devleoping awfully slowly.

agreed. maybe marcus thomas translates into a decent 3-4 end. but they have a serious deficit of players who fit those roles. at OLB you'll have moss and dumerville moving from DE. still need some depth and talent there, but DL is the even bigger need. my ranking of their needs would DL, then secondary, then OLB, then ILB.

Keep us in the loop if you hear anything about Woodyard (6'1 230, but how accurate is the 230?) possibly moving to safey....he seems to undersized to play inside in the 3-4 but I could see DJ and Larsen playing inside but I guess that means you guys would need to address the fullback spot too(or did they do that already?)
