DMD
Emmitt has been cut from his NFL analyst position at ESPN. Though #22 is my all-time favorite football player, even I had to cringe when he spoke and I wanted him to succeed. He certainly has the knowledge to contribute but his diction was just a major liability. Wonder who will take his place?

However, you said it well, listening and watching him discuss anything was pretty tough. All kinds of subject-verb agreement issues, etc. I didn't think it would happen, him being let go, because of who he was but I guess it was only a matter of time. Does Brett Favre take his place unless he is already pegged for somewhere else? Hunting maybe?

j2v
Favre isn't a great talker either. Gruden would be better in my opinion. Gruden has been great during the Combine coverage. He's still a little rough around the edges, talking over people and the like, but he's certainly not afraid to offer an opinion even if it contradicts with what the others are thinking. I'd be surprised if he's in broadcasting long enough to become much more polished, though; he'll be back coaching before too long.

No question that Favre isn't a great speaker either but he's a big name like Emmitt. The problem with bringing Favre on board would be the drama he brings of possibly retiring from ESPN every year. He'll be doing TV this year but be back to coaching next year. With Favre, it's hunting or broadcasting.
DMD
Does that mean Emmitt will go do local coverage for the Cardinals? Oh LordOpie, we hardly knew ya...

Cowboyz1
I must admit myself, I cringed at times also but when I really think about it, we talk to people like that everyday, our friends and sometimes family. It was nice in a way to see that a guy without perfect well badly imperfect diction and word useage just talk about what he knows. Sometimes I found myself trying to help him mentally through the TV, so I can understand the why but................well I just liked seeing him tell us what he thought in his own raw words that's all. It was refreshing, tough at times yes but I was just starting to accept him for Emmitt being Emmitt. Hard as it was sometimes to make it through, I kind of felt like he was doing his best to tell us his thoughts and wanted to see him improve and work through it you know? Or maybe that is exactly what they told him, Emmitt work on it and come back ok. Because the fans love you and you know what your talking about. He's young and smart, I am sure he will be able to improve and that would be nice to see. Edited February 22, 2009 by Cowboyz1

Favre could do what what Emmitt did away from the desk working with Steve Young. Young is better away from the Countdown desk where he can be himself. I doubt they'd want 2 QB's though. BigMikeinNY
If the Giants don't bring him back, give the spot to Plaxico!
BeeR
I think Emmit and Neil Smith should do a radio show. "Smith & Smith" das what I'm talkin' bout!

Donutrun Jellies
The NCAA should allow "non-student" athletes the option of having eligibility to play college ball for free, based on their athletic ability, while pursuing a "Pre Pro Sports Certificate." The certificate would focus on literacy and diction; money management and financial perspective; gun/domestic violence/traffic laws; how to choose an agent; how to do product endorsements; etc ... After their pro careers, that certificate would qualify them to enter a community college degree program for majors such as "Professional Sports Commentary," "Small Business Owner," etc. The commentary degree would be the ex-player's ticket into the booth. The pusuit of this degree would be funded by the Players' Union, the college that granted the certificate, and the player himself. It's not necessary for all student-athletes by any means -- as Florida State's Myron Rolle and my Phi Beta Cappa Centerfielder prove -- but it would certainly help many, would give greater credibility to actual "student athletes," would improve broadcasts, and would minimize the question, "How the heck did he/she get into/through a prestigious academic institution?" Randall
Now Emmitt can devote all his time to mock drafts.
Cameltosis
Did anyone see Emmitt beefing on Tebow for tieing his TD record in 4 years, a record in only took him 3 years to set? After the commercial break he sheepishly apologized and admitted that Tebow broke the record and it took him 3 years as well. Classic. Man, he was horrible. MTSuper7
Now if only ESPN would part ways with Lou Holtz as an analyst, I might watch more of their overall coverage.
