In the article it states that Harrison is close to asking for his release but it also states that a league source told NFL.com that he has already asked for his release.

Here's the article by Schefter that states Harrison has already asked for the release.

Harrison asks Colts to release him

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Bill Polian, Indianapolis Colts, Marvin Harrison

After the two sides couldn’t agree on a restructured contract, WR Marvin Harrison asked the Colts to release him, a league source said Sunday night.

As much as the team would rather not — and Colts president Bill Polian acknowledged Sunday that it’s a tricky situation — Harrison is a luxury that Indianapolis can no longer afford.

Now that Harrison has declined to restructure his contract, the Colts have little choice but to let him and his $13.4 million salary-cap number go. It will mark the end of an illustrious 13-year career in Indianapolis, where Harrison and QB Peyton Manning formed one of the greatest quarterback-receiver tandems in NFL history.

Already the speculation about where Harrison will land is beginning. For starters, Harrison is determined to continue playing. A logical landing spot would be the receiver-needy Philadelphia Eagles, where Harrison would be reunited with his former Syracuse teammate, QB Donovan McNabb, while getting to play in the city where he lives.

Meh. As an Eagles fan I am not all that excited about having Harrison in Philly especially if we have to pay him a lot of money. I think his better days are well past him. He'd be a decent WR2 at this point, but I just didn't like what I saw from him last season.

Fixed... for myself.

It's hard to believe he's not willing to discuss ways to reduce his cap number. Marv's number would rank first amongst NFL receivers. No way can the Colts afford that for his production level. The Colts have paid him very well over the years. But Marv's been getting odder and odder as the years roll on. Still, I'd hate to see him in another uniform.

He probably feels that after signing the contract in good faith and producing well for the team over the long haul, that they should keep their end of the bargain, and wants that or to be clear of the situation.

I don't see why a player should sign a deal for a certain amount of money and then just expect to not see it at the end.

Because a lot of times, players and agents know that if the contract is severely cap un-friendly in the back end of a contract, they can expect a re-negotiation? Especially when it's good for their client. Sometimes, it's bad . . .

I do not think Marvin has much left in the tank. If he goes elsewhere I think he will be even less productive.

+1

From a fantasy standpoint, he's starting to mirror Isaac Bruce in a way. I don't see him posting anything over 600yds with 5-6 TD's....#3 Fantasy WR at best and thats being highly optimistic. Personally, I think he is done...stick a fork in em.

Isaac Bruce had 61 receptions for 835 yards and 7 TD's last year. That's pretty good on a crappy team like the 49ers . . .

Thanks for the fact check. I was trying to think of somebody off the top of my head with similar types of downward production at that age level and Bruce was the first to pop into my head.

It will be interesting to see what the Colts do. They really don't have anyone in place to take over for Marvin as a #2 WR. This will be Gonzalez's third year. But behind Gonzo, they have nothing. Roy Hall, Pierre Garcon, etc. Yuck. And drafting a WR isn't going to make much of a difference this year. Isaac Bruce is almost the same age as Marvin. He has two more NFL seasons under his belt though. But Bruce has been productive on bad offenses. Marvin was coming off a knee injury last year. The same knee injury that slowed Manning at the beginning of the season. But let's be honest, Marvin needs his knees more than Manning does, and I'm sure it'd take longer to get through it. My point is this: Will the Colts find a #2 WR that can put up 60+ catches and 800+ yards? Is Gonzalez ready for that? And who will be the #3 WR? Is it worth paying Marvin a high salary this year or do you roll the dice and go with someone unproven? And what happens if Wayne or Gonzo gets hurt?

Harrison's stas have declined for a few reasons: yes, he has aged, but also because Wayne emerged as the true #1, and Gonzales began to steal some looks.

Couldn't Harrison at least be considered similar to Derrick Mason (who is only 18 months younger than Harrison) when thrust into the #1 posession-WR role? For the Eagles, that would make Jackson a more-dangerous #2, and put Curtis in the slot where he belongs.

Well said, Cap. Here's the thing, IMO, I think that as a Colts' fan, you shouldn't be overly concerned about looking for a #2 as I think Gonzalez can fill that role. I think you need to upgrade the #3 spot and in that case I think that can be done either by signing a vet WR or by drafting a rook and there seems to be plenty of options in this WR class and many with great speed.

I just think that may be a bit optimistic. If his declining abilities weren't worry enough, there are rumblings about his character due to recent legal disputes. I won't put too much stock in the character issues because he has performed well over the years and hasn't been much of a problem within the lockeroom, but do I want to be the team overpaying for his services the next year or two? I'll pass if it costs too much.

The cost is what I don't get ie why didn't he try to re-negotiate w/the Colts? Does he really think he's going to get a ton elsewhere?

The Colts have historically allowed players to play out their contracts. They don't usually release them mid-contract. Edge played out his and got franchised for one year. Saturday just finished his contract. Perhaps Marvin felt he would get the same treatment. I don't blame him for being upset. I'm sure he wants to see what kind of offers he'll get on the open market. Plus, he's sure to get a signing bonus. I wish him well. He's been a great Colt. My first year of season tickets was his rookie year. He caught a TD against the Cardinals in his first game. He's always been one of my favorites. Today is a sad day.

Yeah, let's add another 6'0" WR to the Eagles. The Eagles need a big red-zone target that can also go down field.

I wasn't intimating that Harrison is the ideal fit, but Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson & and Calvin Johnson aren't available...just that he could be a servicible possession WR than knows how to get open for short yardage gains. His prior chemistry with Mcnabb wouldn't hurt.

He may be hoping that Justin McCareins doesn't sign with the Titans.

The diff is those guys were still on (or near) the top of their game, and neither cost anywhere near $13M to keep. Harrison is a crackhead if he thinks he's worth even half that.

I'm still holding out hope that the Eagles can work a deal for Boldin. If not they will have to find a big target (WR or TE) who can help inside the 20.
