CUTLER THINKS HE'S STILL ON THE BLOCK

Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 8:25 PM

Despite an effort by the team to explain that it wasn't and isn't trying to trade him, quarterback Jay Cutler considers himself on the block.

"My understanding at this point is they're trying to trade me," Cutler told Mike Klis of the Denver Post. "We'll see where I end up at. I liked it here, I liked playing with these guys but obviously they're not going to let me have that opportunity."

Past tense. I liked it here.

And there's more.

"I'm upset," Cutler said. "I mean I'm really shocked at this point. I could see why they want [Matt] Cassel. I don't know if they think I can't run the system or I don't have the skills for it. I just don't get it. Or if they don't think they can sign me with my next contract. I just don't know what it is. I've heard I'm still on the trading block."

Coach Josh McDaniels questions the accuracy of Cutler's sources.

"We don't want to trade Jay," McDaniels told Klis. "We never did. He's our quarterback. We're excited about this season. And excited about what we're doing here in free agency to improve our team."

But, really, what else could McDaniels say? If they can't trade Cutler, they need to move forward.

And Cutler seems to be willing to give it a try.

"Anything can be mended," he said. "I'll always play with the guys we've got. I love playing for those guys. Obviously, Josh and I's relationship has taken a few steps backward. I don't play for the coaches anyway, I play for teammates. As long as we keep the guys we've got I'll go out there and play. I love those guys."

And Cutler offered a warning regarding the potential reaction of his teammates to a trade.

"I know they love playing for me and I love playing for them," Cutler said. "There's going to be a lot of problems if they try to trade me. Well, they've already tried to trade me, but if they trade me for sure."

Source: Spurned Cutler wants to be traded

February 28, 2009 7:30 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The Denver Broncos may have seriously damaged their relationship with quarterback Jay Cutler.

A source close to the situation confirmed the Broncos were trying to acquire quarterback Matt Cassel from the New England Patriots by dangling Cutler, their Pro Bowl quarterback.

The trade talk infuriated Cutler, who now wants to leave the Broncos.

The source said the proposed trade was a three-way deal that would have sent Cassel to Denver to reunite with former Patriots offensive coordinator and new Denver head coach Josh McDaniels, Cutler to Tampa Bay and compensation from Tampa Bay to New England.

Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel were traded Saturday to Denver's AFC West rival Kansas City for a second-round pick.

A source close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Broncos pursued the trade because McDaniels wanted to be reunited with Cassel, who excelled under McDaniels last season as an injury replacement for Tom Brady.

In the aftermath of the trade Saturday, Cutler asked permission to find his own trade partner but was denied by the Broncos, according to the source. Cutler is still hopeful he will be traded because he feels betrayed by McDaniels, the source said.

The source said Denver is no longer interested in dealing Cutler, who made the Pro Bowl in 2008, his second full season as a starter. The source said Tampa Bay, Detroit and Chicago could be possible destinations if Cutler gets his way and is traded. The source pointed out that until Cutler heard about the trade talks Saturday, he was completely happy playing for McDaniels and being in Denver.

It may be difficult for Denver to trade Cutler now because there are no other quality quarterbacks available. It would be silly to trade him to the Lions for the No. 1 overall pick and try to draft Georgia's Matthew Stafford or USC's Mark Sanchez. Neither of those players is a known commodity, while Cutler has blossomed into one of the NFL's better quarterbacks.

Denver has to regain Cutler's trust immediately or this could turn into one of the NFL's uglier situations.

The source said that while Denver hopes to smooth the situation over, Cutler probably will seek to depart Denver as a restricted free agent in two years. Cutler signed a six-year deal with the Broncos after he was drafted with the No. 11 overall pick in 2006.

The source said Cutler was hurt by the news that McDaniels wanted to start his Denver tenure with Cassel and not him.

"The relationship has been tarnished," the source said. "I think it's beyond repair."

Cutler expressed displeasure when Denver fired coach Mike Shanahan in December. However, he has been publicly supportive of McDaniels and had several good meetings with the coach in the weeks since McDaniels took over. The source said Cutler was confused by the trade talk.

"It's like a knife to Jay's heart," the source said. "It will be hard for him to get past this."

McDaniels will be able to get past this issue, but it may take some time. The Broncos sold McDaniels' hiring as a chance for Cutler to flourish. Seven weeks later, the pairing has taken a sudden and potentially disastrous turn.

Consider this...

McDaniels did not want to trade Cutler, but wanted to kick Cutler in his ego. The kid is a gunslinger and if we're going to win, he needs to control that garbage. And what the heck was Cutler thinking by saying he has a stronger arm than Elway? True or not, you don't say that.

Then Cutler blows a fuse that Shanny was let go and no one talked to him about it? Then Bowlen makes the mistake of saying that Cutler is the man around here.

Do we all agree that Cutler's ego could slow this offense's production or get them booted from the playoffs if not controlled?

Cutler could be the best QB ever, but not without good coaches help him grow. How much would he listen to the coaches if his ego got in the way?

Coach McD in one easy move sent a very powerful message today -- everyone works together towards the same goal and listen to your position coaches and coordinators. NO ONE is exempt!

I applaud HC and GM for this very aggressive move to demonstrate to everyone, including and especially ego-driven QB boy, we're a team, act like it or get the "f" out.

Well done and welcome to Denver Coach!

Cutler needs to take the diaper off and put on the big boy shorts.

Sorry, but this seems like a hugh reach. The front office screwed up. You don't alienate your starting QB when there really was no need to do so. Especially when you are trying to build a relationship and get things going in the right direction.

Can this day get any better for Chiefs fans? We got a proven denfensive leader, hopefully a good long term QB and got a division rival to start bickering amongst themselves. And it only cost us a second round draft pick.

Now thats funny and I dont care who you are.

The Lions were also involved in an interesting scenario involving quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Jay Cutler. According to Adam Schefter of NFL.com, the Lions wanted to acquire Cassel in a trade with the New England Patriots and then turn around and trade Cassel to the Denver Broncos for Cutler.

That deal, though, fell apart and Cassel was eventually traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

A potential deal with the Lions and Broncos, though, might still be in the works.

"I've heard the rumors,'' Cutler told a Denver television station. "I know what they're trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I'd love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it.''

A deal for Denver quarterback Jay Cutler fell through, but the Lions may be still working on a deal.

Lions spokesman Bill Keenist said the team had no comment on any reports involving a trade with Denver.

Per Roto:

ESPN.com's Bill Williamson reports that the Broncos were actively trying to acquire Matt Cassel in exchange for Jay Cutler.

The Broncos publicly have denied this, and NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported earlier Saturday that the team just listened to other proposals. Chris Mortensen said Cutler doesn't want to be traded, but also indicates the Broncos actively sought to move Cutler. We suspect this story is just getting started.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the Patriots turned down a package from the Bucs in a possible three-way Matt Cassel deal that included a first- and third-round pick.

In this scenario, the Patriots would have received the picks, Denver would get Matt Cassel, and Tampa would get Jay Cutler. But there has to be more to the story. Why would the Patriots turn down better picks? One admittedly speculative guess is that the deal with the Chiefs was already verbally agreed to at this point, and the Patriots couldn't back out. Mike Vrabel, after all, was in Kansas City Friday.

This says it all.

If they were trying to send him a message about being too full of himself, IMHO they went way too far.

Looks like they were not only trying to move Cutler, but also Scheffler.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk.com that Jay Cutler was at one point as good as "gone" during three-team trade talks that ultimately fell through Saturday

It appears Josh McDaniels wanted Matt Cassel bad and either the Lions or Bucs were ready to fork over a first-round pick plus for Cutler. Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, says the Broncos "just told me that only inquiries were being made." "Jay Cutler is pissed, no doubt about it," Cook added. "I wouldn't blame him. Cutler is the best young quarterback in the entire league.

In addition to Jay Cutler, Denver was reportedly shopping Tony Scheffler in trade talks on Saturday.

Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders may be in over their heads. Scheffler would make more sense to deal than Jay Cutler because he's in a contract year and might not fit the offense, but the new regime letting this info get out can only be bad. Scheffler and Cutler are also close friends and roommates. McDaniels and Xanders are going to have to do damage control all spring.

Bingo. Cutler is immature, but I like his ego. He still reminds me of a young #7 and I think that's enough promise to cut the guy some slack. I don't think he'll end up being as good as Elway, but if he plays with similar intensity, leadership and flair I'll be happy to watch.

Ugh. Always good to piss off your best player right off the bat. Why they would ever entertain trading him I'll never know. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I'd like to hope that this story is more media hype than substance. But maybe McDaniels is off his rocker... I don't care if he loves Matt Cassel... The fan base sure wouldn't like it if he actively wants to trade "the best young QB in the league". Now, if McDaniels had given Cutler a season and Cutler was still a whiny little beotch, then a trade might make more sense. But shouldn't they at least try to work together?

Dear Jay,

You are a commodity and you are not a Camp Chipamunga with the guys. Welcome to the Business of the NFL, where if the price is right, your address could change overnight......just ask the Colts.

Yours Truly,

CW

ugh, what a clusterf*ck.

cutler needs to man up and get over it. he doesn't know what the conversations were or how serious they were. all he knows or needs to know is that he is a denver bronco.

but what the hell are these tools thinking? especially if I am to believe that the proposed deal was anything remotely close (on the broncos end) to cassel for cutler straight up. that would be the dumbest f'ing trade ever.

I wouldn't mind if they traded Scheffler......dude's a little too injury-prone for my liking.

I wonder how much of this story is just Mike Klis (Denver area writer) stirring up the pot for a story. Still, it begs the question: how long will the Broncos be willing to stick with Cutler? What if they don't make the playoffs in the next two years...that would be a 5 year drought all on Cutler's watch. There's a lot of what ifs, would haves, and could haves about this Broncos team the last two years, but the bottom line is finding a way to win.

You do realize that Cutler is only in his 2nd full year (corrected thanks Big John). If memory serves me right, Elway was not very good until his 4th year. Not going to the playoffs the past 2 years is not Cutler's fault. Does he have some work to do.....yes, can he improve a ton.......absolutely. However, he is extremely talented and can get Denver into the playoffs.

This is a huge mess either way you slice it. If there is any truth to this rumor at all then the front office is screwing up royally. Do you really think Cassel is a better QB than Cutler? I seriously doubt that. If Cassel is in Denver last year are we talking about how good he is? I highly question this move. In my mind McD has just dropped down a couple of notches because of this.
