Not a big surprise..

IRVING - Roy Williams is no longer a Dallas Cowboy.

After attempts to trade the five-time Pro Bowl safety failed, the Cowboys decided to release Williams, their No. 1 draft pick in 2002. Williams confirmed his release Thursday morning in a text message.

By cutting Williams, the Cowboys save roughly $2 million in salary-cap space in 2009 and close the book on a player who was once the face of the franchise.

Williams was named to the Pro Bowl from 2003 to '07, earning a reputation as one of the NFL's most-feared hitters. He was also named All-Pro in 2003 and only five defensive players in franchise history have played in more Pro Bowls than Williams as a Cowboy. He finished his Dallas career with 611 tackles, 6½ sacks, 22 tackles for loss, 21 quarterback pressures, 56 pass deflections and 19 interceptions. He returned three for a touchdown, one shy of the team record.

Williams, 28, was limited to three games in 2008 because of a twice fractured right forearm and he finished with just nine tackles.

The Cowboys signed Williams to a $25 million extension on Aug. 2, 2006, that included an $11.1 million signing bonus, which at the time was the most in history for a safety. But Williams' coverage skills became more of an issue over the last few years, something that he believed was a result in the change to the 3-4 scheme from the 4-3 system the Cowboys used when he was drafted out of Oklahoma.

Williams also earned several fines and was suspended by the NFL for a game for horse-collar tackles, which is commonly known as the Roy Williams Rule.

Williams was also one of the most involved players in the community with his Safety Net Foundation work for single moms, setting up offices in Dallas and Oklahoma to help families in need

Still trying to figure out how any DB who couldn't handle a tree stump in coverage makes it to 5 straight Pro Bowls.

Great College player with the famous stuff he made at the GL, originator of the horse collar and he can push more kids on swings than anyone else in the NFL.

Williams was an awesome run-stopping safety but Dallas decided to make him cover wideouts with predictable results. Williams as a pass rusher did far more good than dropping him into coverage. He can be a very nice addition but he has to be used to his strengths.

Don't be surprised to see Al Davis on this one as well...

He was disappointed Gibril didn't do damage against the run - and would most likely put Roy and Huff in based on pass/run situations.

As a Sooner and Cowboy fan, Roy was my favorite player.

Dallas never should have switched to the 3-4 defense. And would be better suited to run the 4-3 right now.

The defense should be as follows

DE Marcus Spears

DE Greg Ellis / Anthony Spencer

DT Marcus Spears

DT Jay Ratliff

MLB - Bradie James

WLB - Keith Brooking

SLB - Kevin Burnett

CB - Terrance Newman

CB - Mike Jenkins

SS - Roy Williams / Ken Hamlin

FS - Anthony Henry

Henry is a corner that is too slow to cover one on one, and is better suited to play free safety. he has coverage skills, and wouldnt be burned like Hamlin and ROY at safety. But we dealt him, for a backup QB, who maybe no better than one on the street right now in Chris Simms or Jeff Garcia.

If Pitt signs him he will be moved to LB and be defensive player of the year. Those star headed tools wasted a great talent.

Dallas should have seriously considered bulking him up 5 to 10 lbs and making him an OLB. Im extremely disappointed in this move. The TO move is probably a good one, though he is talented on the field. But this one makes no sense to me, considering our defense is better suited to be a 4-3 than a 3-4 to begin with.

Thanks Roy for all the good years, I always liked watching you play. However, you haven't been getting it done as of late and as much as I am sorry to see you go, I have to agree with the release. I could put up with the missed assignments and getting beat deep while you were knocking people out and forcing turnovers and harrassing the QB but all that is gone too. Time for some new blood.

Good luck Roy.
