CBS mock drafts

I know it's CBS but still...

One of them

The first round of the 2009 NFL Draft is beginning to crystallize with teams filling needs through free agency - and others being created by departures. Strong runs on offensive tackles, wide receivers and linebackers could dictate the action April 25. However, it will be the quarterbacks - as usual - that ultimately set the board. Georgia's Matt Stafford remains the clear favorite to go to the Lions with the first pick, but if coach Jim Schwartz and company were to pass over Stafford in favor of Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith or Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, it could set off a chain reaction of events that would impact every team. Should Stafford slip past Detroit, only St. Louis (No. 2) and Seattle (No. 4) would appear to be even remotely possible landing spots before Jacksonville with the eighth pick of the draft. Stafford dropping would almost certainly lead to similar tumbles by Southern Cal's Matt Sanchez and Kansas State's Josh Freeman, scrambling the board much like how the frenzy of offensive tackles taken last year dictated the action.

2009 NFL Mock Draft - 3/6/2009

Round 1

1. Detroit Lions

Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia: Marginal performances by the other quarterbacks at the Combine may have confirmed what most already suspected - that Stafford is unquestionably the top passer in this class. The Lions dined with several candidates for the top pick during the Combine, including Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry and Southern Cal quarterback Mark Sanchez, but they met first with Stafford.

2. St. Louis Rams

Jason Smith, OT, Baylor: With Orlando Pace entering his 13th season and a possibly salary cap victim and starting RT Alex Barron a year away from free agency, the Rams need to address their tackle situation after missing out on Michigan's Jake Long last year. Smith cemented his position as the top tackle in this class - and a virtual lock for the top four - with an impressive all-around performance at the Combine.

3. Kansas City Chiefs

Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest: Considered by many to be the safest pick of the draft, the Chiefs would be wise to add Curry if he's available. Flanked by the playmaking Curry, former top pick Derrick Johnson could get the spark needed to rejuvenate his career.

4. Seattle Seahawks

Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia: Monroe told media at the Combine that he admired current Seahawks tackle Walter Jones' play. With free-agent additions filling holes at defensive tackle (Colin Cole) and wide receiver (T.J. Houshmandzadeh), general manager Tim Ruskell might just help Monroe get a better view of the future Hall of Famer.

5. Cleveland Browns

B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College: The new regime in Cleveland wasted little time in jettisoning malcontent tight end Kellen Winslow, Jr. If nose guard Shaun Rogers continues to gripe, Raji could take his place sooner rather than later.

6. Cincinnati Bengals

Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech: The Bengals added Laveranues Coles to offset the loss of T.J. Houshmandzadeh in free agency, but Coles and Chad Johnson aren't spring chickens. Crabtree's decision to undergo surgery this week to repair the stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal isn't a concern for most clubs, who appreciate the fact that being ready for May minicamps is more important to Crabtree than working out for scouts.

7. Oakland Raiders

Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri: Considering that the Raiders need help along the offensive line and re-hired former offensive line coach Tom Cable as head coach, one might think the smart move would be to add protection for JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden. But the Raiders also lack a speedy, playmaking receiver like Maclin.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars

Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi: LT Khalif Barnes surrendered more sacks last season (7.5) than any other blind-side blocker and is an unrestricted free agent unlikely to return. Oher raised some eyebrows during interviews at the Combine, but Jack Del Rio and his coaching staff have extra insight into his ability after coaching him at the Senior Bowl.

9. Green Bay Packers

Everette Brown, DE, Florida State: Packers coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson each expressed optimism that career defensive end Aaron Kampman would be able to make the transition to outside linebacker in the club's new 3-4 scheme. With concerns on the other side, as well, the Packers would be wise to add reinforcements via the draft with the athletic and versatile Brown.

10. San Francisco 49ers

Mark Sanchez, QB, Southern California: While it appears unlikely that San Francisco will be able to sign Kurt Warner as a free agent, it does again prove that the 49ers are not entirely comfortable with current quarterbacks Shaun Hill and Alex Smith. Sanchez has the combination of arm strength, accuracy and leadership that no current San Francisco signal-caller can boast.

11. Buffalo Bills

Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas: The loss of Pro Bowl defensive end Aaron Schobel after five games had a lot to do with the Bills' anemic pass rush (26th in the NFL). Schobel, who will turn 32 in September, has only 7.5 sacks over the past two seasons. Orakpo, the Hendricks' Award winner as the nation's top defensive end, could offer more explosiveness off the edge.

12. Denver Broncos

Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU: The addition of free-agent DT Darrell Reid will help, but the Broncos remain woefully unprepared along the line to transition to the 3-4 scheme preferred by coach Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. Jackson, whose stock is rising, is one of the few defensive linemen of the 2009 draft with the size, strength and experience to make an immediate impact up front in this scheme.

13. Washington Redskins

Brian Cushing, OLB, Southern California: The Redskins had to cut former standout SLB Marcus Washington as part of their effort to land Albert Haynesworth. Their two other starters - ILB London Fletcher and WLB Rocky McIntosh - are either old or oft-injured. Cushing could make an immediate impact on the strong side, but has the versatility to play at any of the linebacker positions effectively.

14. New Orleans Saints

Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State: The Saints added Jabari Greer in free agency, but that alone doesn't fix one of the league's worst secondaries. Whether New Orleans sees Jenkins as a corner or safety, he can still be an immediate contributor for this defense.

15. Houston Texans

Chris Wells, RB, Ohio State: The free-agent addition of DE Antonio Smith gives the Texans plenty of flexibility on draft day. Should a true outside linebacker like Cushing be available here, the Texans would likely pounce. As it stands, adding a powerful back to compl-ment the shifty Steve Slaton would be the wisest move.

16. San Diego Chargers

Andre Smith, OT, Alabama: The Chargers are confident that LT Marcus McNeill will return healthy from offseason neck surgery and they were happy enough with Jeromey Clary's first starting season at right tackle to tender him. Smith, however, would bring a powerful run-blocking presence that this line currently lacks and improve the teams' depth up front.

17. New York Jets

Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland: The Jets desperately need to add size and speed to their receiving corps. Heyward-Bey, who is flying up the board after his impressive Combine workout, would give the Jets their best deep threat since the club traded away Santana Moss.

18. Chicago Bears

Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State: Like Rex Grossman before him, the Bears too often seemed to win in spite of Kyle Orton. Chicago fans may groan with the pick, but the simple fact is Freeman has rare tools and could develop into a true franchise quarterback given some time and patience.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi: Coach Raheem Morris knows full well that the key to the Tampa-2 scheme is providing pressure with just the front four. The Bucs haven't had a consistent interior pass rusher since Warren Sapp donned the uniform. Jerry isn't as explosive as Sapp, but he's a fabulous value at this point and would improve this unit immediately.

20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas)

Rey Maualuga, ILB, Southern California: The immediate success by rookies Matt Ryan and Curtis Lofton for the Atlanta Falcons last year could give Detroit similar aspirations. The combination of Stafford and Maualuga would be the building blocks the team uses to finally pull itself out of the doldrums.

21. Philadelphia Eagles

Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia: Brian Westbrook remains a superstar, but at 30 years old and suffering from a degenerative knee condition, he may no longer be capable of full-time duties. With two first-round picks and having paid attention to their offensive line via free agency (Stacy Andrews), the Eagles would be wise to take the underrated Moreno.

22. Minnesota Vikings

Percy Harvin, WR, Florida: The trade for QB Sage Rosenfels should upgrade the passing game. So, too, would the addition of a versatile slot receiver like Harvin, who could also make an immediate impact as a returner.

23. New England Patriots

Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois: The Patriots are still feeling the sting of losing Asante Samuel to free agency a year ago. Davis has rare athleticism, and - especially important to New England - the bulk and temperament to play sound run defense.

24. Atlanta Falcons

James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio State: Letting Keith Brooking and Michael Boley leave has created a huge vacuum at outside linebacker. There will be linebackers available with higher upside, but for a team building itself with no-nonsense, Day 1 contributors, there may not be a better fit in the draft than the ultra-consistent Laurinaitis - who some feel projects best to weak-side linebacker anyway.

25. Miami Dolphins

Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State: The Dolphins have other needs, but considering Bill Parcells' penchant for selecting pass rushers, the fact that 11-year veteran Joey Porter (18) contributed roughly half of Miami's 40 sacks and that this is an especially strong year for the position, few league insiders would be surprised if Miami took another pass rusher here. Maybin has an explosive first step, but is very raw prospect.

26. Baltimore Ravens

Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut: The Ravens addressed one hole at cornerback with the free-agent addition of Domonique Foxworth, but this remains a position in flux, considering that veteran Samari Rolle asked for his release and Chris McAlister was already cut. Butler is moving up the charts after an impressive Senior Bowl and Combine performances.

27. Indianapolis Colts

Evander Hood, DT, Missouri: The Colts always seem to be on the lookout for size and strength on the defensive interior. Hood's steady improvement while at Missouri and impressive performances at the Senior Bowl and Combine have his stock soaring.

28. Philadelphia Eagles (from Carolina)

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State: Despite franchising L.J. Smith, the Eagles' best tight end through most of last season was receiving specialist Brent Celek. Pettigrew, a dominant blocker, would be a bit of a luxury selection, but considering the importance of the tight end in this offense and the fact that the Eagles have two first-round picks due to their trade last year with Carolina, they can afford it.

29. New York Giants

Clay Matthews, OLB, Southern California: Linebacker has traditionally been an area of strength for the Giants, but they struggled in this area in 2008 and would like to add youth and versatility to the position. Some feel that Matthews, Jr. will ultimately develop into a better player than either of his former teammates, Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga.

30. Tennessee Titans

Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee: The free-agent loss of Albert Haynesworth stings, but the Titans could recoup some of his impact ability with the versatile and explosive Ayers. The public relations factor of drafting a local star wouldn't be lost on the Titans, at this point, either.

31. Arizona Cardinals

Larry English, OLB, Northern Illinois: Much has been made of the Cardinals' dire need for running back help, but the situation is nearly as disconcerting at rush linebacker, where the Cardinals currently feature soon-to-be 33-year-old Chike Okeafor. English is a natural pass rusher who showed remarkable fluidity at the Combine and is flying up draft boards.

32. Pittsburgh Steelers

Sean Smith, CB, Utah: Starting cornerback Bryant McFadden is an unrestricted free agent and likely to command more money than the Steelers are willing to fork over. Smith, stunningly agile despite his size, is earning high second-round grades by many teams and could sneak into the first after his strong Combine performance.
