Welcome to all those who have offered up their time and effort to participate in this NFL Mock Draft, along with those wanting to follow along!! This should be a lot of fun watching fellow Huddlers play GM for their Homer teams. I also wanted to add that if any Huddler would still like to be a part and have their opinion/voice heard when their Homer teams' pick comes up, feel free to PM me or the Huddler listed with the specific team below. Please keep all comments in this thread only as the actual selections will be in the other Draft thread.

Thanks.

What is the time limit between picks?

With the draft so far off from now (47 days away) there isn't any. Didn't feel that we needed one. Let's hope we have fun with this and that it moves along reasonably enough.

If we have any issues arise, we'll cross those bridges as we get to them.

Policyvote goes against many of the mocks out there and selects Aaron Curry.

Peteteacher2001 is now on the clock selecting for the St. Louis Rams.

Wow a LB? I'd like to hear Policy's take on that. I'd woulda thought you would want an OL before a defensive player.

I am supposing that we are to give a little insight on why we selected our players.

OL was a TRUE no brainer with Curry off of the board. My decision between Monroe and Smith was that I believe the relationship between Chris Long and his former OT Monroe will payoff in spades as the future unfolds. Monroe can flat out play and is a bit safer on the floor/ceiling side of things. I also think that the Long, Monroe, Jason Brown, type of folks on either side of the line will cement a great core group of leaders and fantastic players for years to come.

Who was the last LB picked #1? Has there ever been one?

Looked it up-going back to 1936

1988 Aundray Bruce LB Auburn Atlanta Falcons 11 0

1979 Tom Cousineau LB Ohio State Buffalo Bills 6 0

1966 Tommy Nobis LB Texas Atlanta Falcons (NFL) 11 5

1949 *Chuck Bednarik C/LB Pennsylvania Philadelphia Eagles 12 8

Couple of quick facts:

* the Lions' starting linebackers are, of this moment:

SLB: Alex Lewis, career special teamer, 6'-0", 228

MLB: Jordon Dizon, lost rookie year to injury, 6'-0", 229

WLB: Ernie Sims, 5'-11", 220

That would be an unacceptably small LB corps for a Big Ten school, let alone a NFL team.

* The Lions allowed 32.3 points per game last year, by far the worst in the NFL.

* The Lions allowed 2,754 yards rushing to opponents last year, on 536 carries--that's an average of 5.1 ypc.

* The Lions were passed against fewer times than any team in the NFL, yet allowed the 27th most yardage.

* Opposing passers' average QB rating was 110.9 No, not a typo, one hundred and ten point nine.

Okay, so, get it? The defense was beyond atrocious last year, it was historically bad. Statistically speaking, the defense was dead last in nearly every category. On top of that, the Lions released (or didn't re-signed) #1 CB Leigh Bodden, starting MLB Paris Lenon, and starting SLB Ryan Nece. So, basically, the LB position was a lethal weakness in 2008 and it is significantly worse now.

Secondly, the Lions have a mediocre LT in Jeff Backus and a guy who got cut from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at LG. There are two possible ways to fix this: 1) draft a Jason Smith at 1.1, start him, and bump Backus to guard, or 2) draft an interior lineman with the 2.1 and live with Backus. I would be a-okay with either scenario, since we don't know how Backus would be at guard, and rookies are always a roll of the dice. In fact, since elite LTs are ONLY available at the top of the draft, I have argued that the Lions cannot pass up the chance to get one here.

However, it's inarguable that the Lions's defense is punishingly wretched, while their offense is merely not good. Curry's incredible size, speed and intelligence could make him the best Lion on the defensive side of the ball from day one. Moroever, the Lions' defense has no leader. Sims plays with lots of passion, but he doesn't have the gift of inspiring other men to play like him. Curry could immediately fill that role. Finally, Schwartz has been saying all along that he doesn't want "the right position", he wants "the right person": a good kid, a hard worker, someone who's both athletically elite and a remarkable individual--and he's pointed at Megatron as the perfect example of that. Between his insightful blogging, his committment to supporting his family, and his jaw-dropping performance and toolset, I really think that Curry is "the right player".

Curry would have probably been my choice. But not disappionted at all with Smith being there. At 6'5", 310 lbs. he would be a great OT for the Chiefs. Relatively injury free (except for that sprained MCL) and good work ethic. I think that if Curry isnt there in the real draft and Smith is the Chiefs would probably pick him up.

Yes, giving a little insight for each pick is nice to hear and well done on your part. However, since this is mostly about having some fun along with chatting about football, I left that part open-ended and if some don't feel comfortable explaining their pick in great detail, that's fine too.

Great explanation and breakdown! I like the pick as well. Obviously the Lions have more than one pressing need with QB being one of the others. However, grabbing Curry would certainly fill one of those needs.

Fingfootball has selected OT, Jason Smith for the Chiefs with the 3rd pick.

theprofessor is now up with the 4th pick selecting for the Seattle Seahawks.

I am going against the grain a little bit here but I love this pick .......... Jeremy Maclin WR, Missouri

With the two top OL off the board I felt I had to go with an impact player on offense and it came down to Crabtree or Maclin. With the addition of Houshmandzadeh I feel that we need more of a deep threat to keep the safety's from cheating up. I think that Crabtree and Housh have a lot of the same skill sets and that Maclin brought a dynamic to the field that would benefit the offense more than Crabtree. With Maclins speed and game breaking ability he'll open the middle up for Carlson and Houshmandzadeh and give the Seahawks a deep threat that they haven't had since the Joey Galloway days. With Deion Branch's health being an issue this pick also gives the Seahawks some added insurance if Branch goes down again.

Blessed with great speed and elusiveness, the smooth-striding Maclin reminds some of Randy Moss and has star potential written all over him.

In addition, Maclin is a premier return guy and even though they have one of the best in Burleson this gives them another option. The addition of Maclin gives the Seahawks a potent passing game and some needed depth at a position that we were decimated at last year.

Ballsy pick!! Looks like I'm not the only guy that thinks Maclin is gonna be a gamer.

Policy, great explanation of your pick!

+1

Respect the pick.

Heck, if Curry is the best player on the Lions' board, they should take him. IMHO, they should not take a QB if they have doubts.

As far as the pick goes...

Where do I start, the Browns need help in plenty of places but I think the most pressing is some kind of playmaker on defense. I would love to have Curry here but there is no way he lasts this long. I was deciding between Orakpo, Everette Brown DE FSU and to a certain extent Maualuaga. I went with Orakpo because he can take some pressure off the fat ass Shaun Rogers in the middle and maybe Wimbley will come back to life with some youth on the other side.

I like Orakpo's athleticism and motor which should translate well into the NFL. Hopefully he can turn into a D. Freeney or Robert Mathis type disruptor.
