Dumervil and Reid to play OLB

(Rotoworld) Broncos coach Josh McDaniels confirmed that Elvis Dumervil and Darrell Reid will be used as hybrid defensive end-linebackers to rush the quarterback.Analysis: "He's going to do both. He's going to have his hand on the ground some, and he's going to stand up some," said McDaniels. As an undersized end and a poor run-stopper, Dumervil should be used almost exclusively as a pass rusher.

Interesting. Donkey homers, I admitted don't see Dumervil in action. Is he fast enough to play OLB? Good fit here?

I assume they mean "in rotation" and not as starters? I expect that the newly signed FA Andra Davis will be one of the starters at OLB.

Davis played ILB in Cleveland. Why would they kick him outside?

Because he'd be a very good Sam LB. If DEN would run with Larsen at Mike, DJ Williams at Mac, Davis at Sam, and Woodyard at Will they might be onto something, and would have strong run/pass stopping ability, with Larsen coming out on passing downs.

That is if they can find anyone to play along the D line...

Davis is fairly small compared to most SAM OLBs in 3-4 at about 6'1" 250. The lighter SAMs are hanging around that 6'3" 265 lb mark whereas the Greg Ellis' of the world hang out at 280+. Add to that the lack of speed from knee issues and his age; doesn't add up to a good SAM IMO. He fits there because I know you desperately want Spencer Larsen to get his shot.

The smaller OLBs in 3-4 tend to need speed to be effective and even then they usually end up getting beat up, think San Francisco's OLBs (Lawson and Haralson both weigh in at about 255)

If I was convinced of footwork and speed, I think Crowder would be perfect for the SAM OLB (6'4" 270 lbs). Even Jarvis Moss is too small for my liking at SAM at 255 lb but he may have to fit there whether they like it or not.

30 years old isn't time to try a position change and I think Denver installs him as the Ted.

Some notes from training camp:

Wesley Woodyard took snaps at inside linebacker. DJ Williams is still recovering from surgery so he wasn't around. Andra Davis took second string snaps inside.

Tim Crowder and Elvis Dumervil took snaps at OLB. Jarvis Moss didn't see much work at all at any position.

No way in Hell Woodyard can compete as a MLB, even in a 3-4 set up. He'll get washed out of plays constantly - there's not nearly enough sand in his pants to play there. The guy is a natural to play the Will.

Nice to see Larsen running with first team ILBs though. He & Willaims inside could be a very credible force in the middle of the field - if they can find somone to keep hoards of O linemen off of them.
